As others have said, such a good beginning. We get glimpses of the different regions of Westeros and Essos, the introduction of the the three families, Stark, Targaryen and Lannister. I especially love the archery scene and how it introduces the Stark family and their relationships. The direwolf scene is even more sad after S6.

I really like that small scene with Maester Luwin and Cat. They talk about Tyrion's need of wine and candles.
It's funny to watch that.
And Arya asking about "Where's the imp?", and later we see Tyrion with Ros and his chatter with her and Jaime. And the whole bunch of them lining up for Robert.

Just finished watching it and although it's a great episodes, it's a bit slower than I remember (I haven't watched it in years). Nonetheless, still a great episode.
As already mentioned they all look so young, it's incredible how much they have grown and we have grown with them. I really like the integrations among the Stark children, it really feels like they have a genuine love for one others. It is noticeable, however, how separate Sansa feels from the rest Arya involves herself with her brother but Sansa keeps to her lady-like upbringing. Jon is so emo, like classic Jon emo. But all seriousness, he's a lovely older brother to Bran, you can see genuine affection there.
It's strange seeing Theon as a dick )not pun intended) again as I'm already use to this new Theon. The cockiness and snide behavior are in full swing, how much that will change come the next few season.
Gosh, I miss Ned, he was such an amazing cast. When I read the books it was Sean Beans face I saw for Ned, just like Jason Momoa is khal Drogo. Speaking of Drogo, Dany is so shy, and timid and quite frankly moonsie. She's afraid of everything and can't stand up for herself. It's such a transformation from that girl to the woman we saw at the end of Season 6. Emilia was great just playing that frighten girl who's afraid of the world.
EYA: completely agree about Peter, it's so campy. Also, is it me or has he gotten more handsome with time. Because he looks really good now. He didn't look so good back then.

Theon may be a dick at this time (no pun intended either) but Alfie Allen does a great job. Even in this first episode.
I like his cockiness. And interactions with the others - it's so true to the books actually IMO.

And interactions with the others - it's so true to the books actually IMO. It's almost difficult to remember how despised Theon was in those early episodes and seasons. He has probably one of the biggest transformations and his story is also one of the most tragic. He could have died a long time ago to end his suffering but has lived on with his guilt and psychotic trauma. Alfie is an amazing actor in that he could portray all of Theon's various personality changes from arrogant young Theon who cracked crude jokes about the prince's "right royal cock" when we first meet him to the terrified and badly damaged Reek, and finally the return to Theon, a changed man who rescues Sansa and returns home to become someone new by his sister's side in allying with Daenerys. Alfie has done a terrific job portraying Theon.

It was a friend who got me thinking about Theon.
And I didn't despise him. Because I like all characters - good and evil and grey.

I would say Theon was more despised on the show than in the books but only because Alfie did a great job of portraying him perhaps. I don't despise him and have enjoyed his story a lot too. I don't despise Cersei either even though she has done despicable things and is far darker than Theon ever was. I really enjoyed seeing Cersei for the first time again. Her 'small talk' with Catelyn at the Winterfell feast as she watched Robert drink and whore right in front of her was great as was her questions to Sansa. Lena really pulled me right in to Cersei's mind from the very first episode.

Theon for most book readers I bet has a face now. The face of Alfie Allen. I still see another "person" when I read the books or listen to the audio books. The same applies to Tyrion. Peter does a very good job, but I see another "person" in my mind.

You see, "Ramsay" got referred to as "boy" at first, because D&D didn't want to spill the beans.
We book readers knew Ramsay would eventually turn up sometime and get a face for the show.
But it's really like in real life. Visualization is the key.

I remember thinking Emilia was quite shakey early on, acting wise. But watching this, I think she had the perfect naivety for Dany in this episode.

Don't know if it's symbolic or not but Jon was excluded from a celebration he wished to attend, while Dany was forced to attend a celebration she didn't want to go to.

Robb putting Arya to bed after she throws food at Sansa though. That always gets me. And I forgot how bad I felt for Cersei having to watch Robert making out with that serving girl at the Winterfell feast. That's embarrassing.

Gosh, I still just get so tingly at the opening credits and this music (which clearly has been refined/re-recorded in recent years...the base line is much stronger now than it was in this first episode). (Note - I was not sure if it is okay to discuss the book here too, so I put any book references in spoiler tags) I don't remember offhand how thick the wall is - but every time I see an interior shot of the tunnel to the north, I'm always taken aback at the length of it. Anyone remember how wide the wall is? Why does it not seem that wide at the top? Why did the WWs decapitate/dismember the wilding camp in the beginning? Wouldn't it make more sense they need them in walking/fighting condition? I've always thought this first scene was curious in that way. Also, how does Will make it south of the wall without "going back to the wall" which he says he didn't do? Things I love in this episode:*Arya. Every scene with Arya. The arrow, the helmet, throwing food at Sansa....just adore her. *Baby direwolves. I mean, seriously. *I miss Cersei's hair. Cersei is so relaxed back in these days. It's almost odd seeing her be pleasant. When she saunters up to meet the Starks with her fur coat hanging open, she looks like she could be in Real Housewives of Kings Landing. It's so perfect. *I giggled at Jon getting a haircut. Who knew this scene would hold such foreshadowing LOL.... *Viserys is so perfectly creepy. Excellent casting. (and he kinda looks like Tom Hiddleston when he smiles....) *The first scene we meet Dany we also learn that "heat" doesn't bother her. I've never caught that before. *The scene with Jon & Tyrion is so simple yet so important. OH how I long for this reunion!!! *Dragon eggs appearance for the first time. I really hope we see one again....maybe under Winterfell? :tinfoil: Things I do not love in this episode:*I know there are Cat fans here, but I have never been. Hated her in the books - and Michelle Fairley is amazing as Cat: for me, she portrays Cat exactly how I imagined her. That being said, I have always appreciated her character because of her affect on Jon. But I will never forgive her for her selfishness. Plus, she never appreciated those direwolves properly. My bias is clear: Dog > Cat. hahaha... but again - Michelle is fantastic as Cat. *I forgot how much I disliked Sansa. I think it took me until S3 to even start coming around and give her a break. *Tyrion's hair. While this look is closer to what the book describes....I so much prefer the blond streaks to the full blond. That being said though is interesting - we know Tyrion is not attractive in the book. I agree with moiaf - He's become handsome in the show, save for a scar or two. There's a line in the book I wish they would have added here though because it's one of my favorites: "Remember boy," (Tyrion says to Jon) "All dwarfs may be bastards, but not all bastards need be dwarfs." And then as he walks away, Jon thinks Tyrion looks "as tall as a King". *Dany receiving the horse as a gift from Drogo...disappointed I do wish they would have shown Dany taking a ride on the horse and for the first time, feeling powerful, free, although I suppose it may have seemed cheesy at that point with the horse leaping the fire, but I loved that scene in the book. It's one of my favorite passages. Why have we not seen Illyrio again? He and Varys are friends, no?
