This episode was a lot worse than I remember it being. I'm sure I enjoyed it at the time, but I felt like I was watching a soap opera, the dialogue was just really contrived.
Cersei and Joffrey's scene was very cringeworthy minus the line "anyone who isn't us is an enemy" As was Jaime and Cersei's meeting later.
Even the Ned/Cat/Baelish scenes felt corny. Same with Jon's "I'm better than them!"
Old Nan telling Bran the stories, complete with the horror movie music was pretty over the top, though I like the scene in general. And I liked Arya and Ned talking about Needle, but man this episode does not hold up.

There are some good moments but it is a weaker episode, especially now looking back it just seems slow and filled with awkwardness, stupidity and unnecessities. But Varys is good and everything with Arya is great in this one.

It's so strange to see Ned, LF, Varys, Pycelle, and Renly at the small council again.

The episode was alright, really not the strongest of episodes. It is as mentione a bit awards and the dialogue is a bit contrite, there are some good bits here and there but really nothing stands out dramatically as a wow or cool moment. I remember Serio being a lot cooler, he's a bit cheesie now. That makes me sad, my memory has been tarnished.

Just finished my re-watch this evening - so many strange things in this one. It felt so different from the first two episodes. King's Landing and the Red Keep seemed a lot more opulent for some reason, especially the throne room, was that re-done at some point? I cannot remember. The people outside also dressed more colorfully, almost Braavosi in style. I'm guessing the years of war (Five Kings) wore the city down as people got poorer. The "Sparrow" days this past season were absolutely drab looking, everyone. The visual imagery is definitely striking from season 1. It was particularly fun to see Renly and everyone else at the small council meeting. Meeting Littlefinger again for the first time was weird. He's changed so much. Particularly Gillen's accent. Wtf. Why did he change it? I preferred this earlier version by far. More normal, less Batman. As others have noted, the dialogue was heavy this episode and it had a drama/soap opera kind of feel to it. Ned overreacting to Cat in the brothel and nearly killing Littlefinger was fun though even if over dramatic. Tons of foreshadowing, hope I can collect it all for an essay - maybe everyone should help me this round since it deserves a little picking apart? Best scenes were Arya with Syrio learning the water dance (Ned's look of dread as he watched was sad), and Tyrion at the wall with Jon. The rest was pretty meh. This was definitely where I started to feel a little something for Jaime and hating Robert a bit more for being a fat dickhead. Joffrey not wanting Sansa already surprised me, I'd forgotten how immediately the little shit turned on her. Dany's scenes were ok, but she hadn't really started to feel comfortable in her Khaleesi role yet and her acting was still a little stilted. Old Nan telling Bran a 'scary story' about the coming winter was sure foreshadowing. Poor Bran realizing he's crippled for life. "I'd rather be dead." made my heart ache for him.

Who was the strange man with the funny little moustache at the small council? He looks familiar; almost identical to someone called Littlefinger. But it can't be him! The accent is completely different! The Littlefinger I know was born and bred in Dublin all his life!

This is what I always refer to as a filler episode. The pieces are moving, we are starting to learn their personalities, their shortcomings.
Best scene is still Syrio and Arya. When Ned steps in, and his smile slowly disappears as he remembers what sword play really is for. Memories of Robert's Rebellion.
Most awkward: First Kill Stories and the smugness disappearing from Robert's face when Jamie tells them the Mad King's last words: "Burn them all."
Not the best episode of the first season, probably the worst, but watching Syrio and Arya almost made up for the weakness

I thought this was a pretty good episode, I don't mind all of the dialogue. My favorite scene was Arya and Ned discovering Needle, "Stick them with the pointy end"! Also, Ned watching her at the end of the episode still brings a smile to my face. Also really enjoyed Tyrion and Jon's scenes at the wall. Man, I really hated Sansa in the first season, but knowing what she will go through, I give her a pass, but she was such a snotty brat.
