I think this locks down no winds this year. You generally don't want to release books that would over shadow what you just released. You never know, but I guess that locks it out for the year. He seems to just want something out there. I don't think it means that at all. He went out of his way to mention several times that this is his friend's book and he used a story he had already written for the GRRMarillion. He has nothing else to do with this and I don't think he particularly cares what overshadows what.

He has nothing else to do with this and I don't think he particularly cares what overshadows what. Okay so he wants to over shadow his friends book? So he is helping out a friend, and also probably making his publisher happy getting something out there. If it's not within 5 chapters in 3 months it's probably not coming out. That's about an 8 month process, it took him from early October 2010 to late April 2011 to finish and edit 5 chapters and meet certain editorial requests. Another six week and it was published. So if he has 5 chapters to do by May, well it's probably not coming out. And we have no update on where the manuscript stands. But I believe the new Novella will be out this fall. So I mean really chances are minimal that he would release two books this fall. He'll probably help promote it as well as he has done in the past for his friends. They almost always let you know when the book is within 6 months of being published so they can promote it. Just like they are doing with this Novella.

I actually don't think he is happy about it at all, you have seen how when he did not like the shows Sansa arc he posted a sample chapter on Sansa. But missing Jon and the tower, man he was toying with that for decades and baiting fans, and teasing us. Well, next time write.

I mentionedthe other day that I though he had lost interest in the series and I think he has to an extent. However, I'm sure it is frustrating for him that he can't or hasn't be able to finish the series given that the show is so close to finishing it for him. I'm sure it's frustrating as hell, but of course he only has himself to blame for that. Nonetheless, if the books ever come out I'll happily read them I just don't have the same level of expectation that I once had.

That makes two of us, maybe three, like you said I am not so sure Martin is that interested. I am still looking forward to Dunk and Egg a lot. I sometimes think he should of just split up all the books and released much smaller books or Novellas, featuring a few POV's each. It's not the big novel but you can condense them into a novel later, but at least we would be reading and he would not struggle as much with a much smaller book or Novella. The Novel seems to have become to much for him to keep track of and contain.

Think about it like this he could have a Jon and Dany book out, I mean for the love of god he juxtaposes them all the time. It could easily work, a Lannister Book, Tyrion, Jaime and Cersei, a Sansa and Arya book, you can mix in the others as needed.

I like this idea and it's just a small variation on him releasing chapters over the years like he's done anyways. I remember when Mercy was first given out, I thought ... "damn, he must be getting closer, this is really good and if I just had a couple more chapters of it I'd know what happens to Arya!" So publishing POV novellas in a series could have been a cool workaround at least until the final chapter/book of the story.

I really, really want TWOW to come out - there're so many story lines from AFFC and ADWD that I've almost forgotten about because they weren't included in the TV series. I read the books before the tv series, and they're still my favorite - the few times I've gone back to them with the idea of completing a reread, I find so much that I either missed the significance of first time through or else had forgotten. I have loved the tv series, too, though - actually seeing characters from the books come alive on the screen has been great, and I think D & D have really done a pretty good job with it. My fear is that Martin might have dug himself into a hole, and now that the show has gone so much further than the published books he might give up altogether. I don't have anything to base that on, just a fear I have. I offset that by reasoning that surely having 'birthed' such a world full of so many characters and so much intrigue, he wouldn't just abandon them (or us). And I agree that he has, IMO, an obligation to his readers to finish the series. I just can't imagine when that will ever be. We've waited so long for TWOW, I can't even imagine what the wait for ADOS would be like. But ... thinking optimistically ... maybe by the time TWOW finally comes out (I still haven't given up hope), he'll have most of ADOS worked out, too. But, whatever ... like moiaf , I just don't have the same level of expectation that I once had, not even what I had when S6 began.

But, whatever ... like moiaf , I just don't have the same level of expectation that I once had, not even what I had when S6 began. I think now we're past the books it's unrealistic to expect D & D to nail the remainder of the series. They have a few months to write the scripts while George has years to ponder over his books. I feel that's why D & D were pushing for shorter seasons, they could write themselves into a hole without Martin's involvement. They have the broad strokes of the ending, so best to hit the points they are aware of regularly without to much filler in between. I for one trust George to finish the series. And while the show is great I find far more enjoyment from reading the intricacies and clues to be found in the books.

I wonder if Gorge is waiting for the show to finalize before he publishes The Winds of Winter. I mean, he's already taken all this time, if he waits until after the show airs, it keeps ASOIAF "in the news". After the show is done the books are all that is left of that world.

Honestly, I think he's just slow and very distracted writer. He has a million knots to untie from AFFC/ADWD before getting to ADOS, where he has knows the ending. TWOW should be harder book to write then ADOS. I wished he would just use the show's inspiration on some of the topics to move forward. (Weird I know).

I think the Meereenese knot is the most difficult for him to get out of because he has so many factions circulating there, but the Battle of Meereen will likely solve those issues. I wish Tyrion had met Dany earlier though like in the show. The timeline is difficult to figure out in some cases, but I imagine that Dany would fly in on Drogon and the Dothraki would charge the Yunkish near the end of it.
