8/10 from me on this week's episode.
I was going to vote it lower because it felt like a bit of up and down this time, but after writing out the scenes I liked and those I didn't, I had to be fair and say the good ones outweighed the bad by a marginal amount to push a 7 upwards to a 7.5 or an 8 because there were brilliant scenes in this episode that are still quoted and remembered 5 seasons later. Especially the Renly/Stannis scene, Catelyn confronting Littlefinger, and Sansa's torment by Joffrey with Tyrion saving her from futher humiliation. Those were brilliant. Oh and Tyrion cornering Lancel was spot on wonderful too. That shithead Lancel!
The not so brilliant bits weighed down a bit, though not nearly at the level that episode two did at least in my opinion. Far more easy to forgive was the somewhat awkward Qarth Thirteen introduction. I'm not even sure why I disliked it other than the sappy spokesman routine and Dany's spitting fire responses that felt too forced. I never liked the conversation Melisandre and Davos had in the rowboat to shore either... it was awkardly out of place for the darkness of the scene. And last but not least, like many others, I wasn't really impressed with the introduction of "Talisa" as the replacement for book version Jeyne Westerling. I thought seeing it again after all this time would make me understand it better, but nope, it was still just as awkward. Also, I never really thought the two actors had a lot of chemistry together for whatever reason, even their love scenes.
That's my quick and dirty review on it... onward!

8½ -> 9 A solid episode, yes it had some really weak scenes. But there's something so raw and "real" in S2 that we don't get to see in the later seasons and I love it. I really loved the WotK setting. ++ Tywin at Harrenhal, that's why he was one of my favorite characters in S2 and S3. What a mighty man. + Harrenhal was great, the S2 mountain was the best when it came to dialogue and armor. + I really miss HotK Tyrion, he was so witty and entertaining, he has certainly changed from those days (thanks to that Purple wedding mess) and perhaps not for the better. Him saving Sansa, figuring out Lancel, fantastic + I forgot how much of a twat Joffrey really was. His scenes were painful to watch, but well done in a way. Great acting from all parties. Thank the gods that the little shit is dead. + Stannis and Renly parlay was great, though it was built quite one sided. I would have loved to see Stannis's "In your bed she's likely to die that way."- line. + All of Renly's camp scenes were good. Especially LF and Cat. + Stannis spitting out some good quotes "cleaner ways don't win wars etc." + Davos and Mel, everything was fine until the awkward "You want me" stuff. The shadowbaby was creepy. +/- Like Envie said, Jeyne's show replacement is quite awkward and doesn't make too much sense. She's quite brave mocking a king and a lord like that. Showing no respect is odd.. then Robb is turned on by her defiance and her sawing off a leg. - Qarth plot starts horribly.. and unfortunately it doesn't improve in the future episodes. + a bonus plus point for Greatjon Umber shouting "THE KING IN THE NORTH". I was really annoyed that they cut so many battle scenes out in S1 and 2. I apologize if the text is confusing, I'm feeling quite feverish.

7. Not crazy about much of this episode. Fart jokes, the start of the terrible Robb/Talisa romance (which took away screentime from the far more interesting character in Cat), excessive Joffrey sadism (did we really need the scene with the whores directly after the Sansa scene?), show Xaro...just no (I know many people don't like book Qarth either, but book Xaro is an underrated character imo. I hate the show version), the worst Mountain by far,
What I did like; Michelle Fairley in the scene LF gives Cat Ned's bones, Arya at Harrenhal, the Stannis/Renly parley, the Spice king, Tyrion helping Sansa and punking out Lancel (S2 really did belong to him). Mixed feelings on the Mel/Davos scene at the end. The dialogue leading up to the shadowbaby was pretty bad, but the birth itself was well done. Pretty uneven episode, like most of S2.

Forgot about that goddamn fart joke. Book Qarth was horrible as well, so well, my expectations when I watched S2 were already quite low, yet I was still disappointed. Book Xaro is slightly better than show Xaro, but still pretty bad. Ramsay's pointless torture scenes feel like copypaste from these Joffrey scenes. Odd to see me defending the show from criticism. I mostly enjoyed the episode because it had plenty of Stannis.

8 out of 10
Hated the excess of Joffrey's sadism. How much of his vile personality was nurture and how much might have been the inbreeding? Certainly growing up with Cersei fawning over him night and day would be enough but he certainly rivals the Mad King Aerys in his perverse behaviors.
I agree the chemistry between Robb and Talisa never made me feel she was worth incurring Walder Frey's wrath but it is what it is.

8/10 for me, I think Tyrion and Tywin's scenes really saved this episode, I never cared for all of the Qarth scenes, they kind of drag until we get to the House of the Undying. Not a bad overall episode though.

A low eight. There are some real lows in this ep. from the Lannister soldier fartathon opening to the Ducksauce intro to LF's Nosferatu accent and Talisa's first year poli-sci student anti-war rant. But there's also a lot of great stuff here. Enough to make up for some really lousy minutes. Which is something that's also the case for the other Vanessa Taylor penned ep. in s2, ep. 206. Generally she was always very hit-and-miss in her GoT work. She did some things really well and others just awfully. But in s2 at least she managed to get the high points very well. Like Cat shitting on LF and brandishing a knife at him. And Gillen's reaction at the end of the scene is actually very good work for him (though that was probably just his genuine reaction to MF fucking owning the last notes of the scene ). Like everything from Carice in the episode. She's great. Her birth-sounds perfectly fit GrrM's description of "agony and ecstasy". Her stillness and dynamic with Cunningham. She's the best. (Her commentary for the ep. with Cunningham is golden btw). The lack of Cersei in the episode is something of a grievous crime. But we do get good KL stuff somehow despite that. Tyrion dressing down two feckless weenies, first Meryn and then Lancel. Meryn's more of a ghoulish toady than an outright weenie. Whereas Lancel's really the biggest paint-by-numbers weenie of all time. And to think that he at the age of twenty was allowed to sleep with Lena's Cersei. By jove. And then still betrayed her, first to Tyrion and then to them Sparrows. What an ungrateful shitheel he was through and through. Punishing Cersei for giving him such a kindly opportunity to learn the ways of the world from a sweet-hearted widow. And then Tywin, quite like his son, destroys the weenies in his staff. Particularly Polliver. He just decimates them. He's like, "Yeah, I know we're evil but why don't we have a balanced budget, motherfucker?" And he gets his torture-porn dungeon's accounts properly evened out in a jiffy. As any great warlord has to do. I guess it's a bit of a stretch that he'd allow his underlings to be quite so incompetent as s2 shows them to be. But I understand the impulse. If you've got Charles Dance in your show you might as well have him scold people. He's a born scolder. Then what else is there? The parley between the Baratheon brothers is really well-done. The pettiness of it all is perfect. If anything encapsulates a brother to brother relationship it's pettiness. It is always annoying in GoT and other shows and movies when siblings call each other "brother" or "sister" in conversation. Something which I assure you no sibling EVER actually does. But I understand the necessity of reminding the casual viewer every five seconds of what the may have just forgotten. Goldfish are people too, y'all.

Spot on review as always konradsmith - and that was a funny one! I especially liked your take on "that weenie" Lancel. Man, he's like the king weenie of all weenies. Even more weenie than Season 6 Lord Karstark the boot-licker Ramsay lackey. I completely agree that a skinny young idiot like Lancel in Cersei's bed is absurd. I'm sure he was a complete disappointment there as well. ugh! Tywin riding in and setting shit straight at Harrenhal was definitely one of those smaller highlights I forgot to mention in my own rather tired write-up this week. I'm running out of steam and I take great notes while watching but then when it comes time to write it all, my creativity goes out the window these past few weeks. Maybe it's just how quiet everyone's been here in general (pre-season doldrums) and the fact that Season 2 was just a difficult one to chew through.
