That sounds interesting. Other than Harry Potter this is the most involve fandome I've been a part of. Funny enough the main person causing all this wank is actually pretty active in the HP fandom now. She wrote that Dumbledore's Army and the Year of Darkness fic. Ha! I haven't been part of the HP fandom in years, I don't even know what's it like anymore. But I can imagine it being an HP fan, it's a very involved fandom.

From what I've read in terms of interviews and stuff with Gillian Flynn, I get the impression she is intentionally writing unlike able characters. Nick and Amy are both terrible people (though Amy really takes it over the edge....) in a really destructive relationship, and I think that is precisely what Flynn was going for. And I applaud her for that actually, I don't think characters in books need to be likeable all of the time. That the plot and writing is strong enough to keep readers engaged is an impressive feat IMO I guess you did not grasp that I was complimenting her. Yes, that is what Flynn was going for or at least I assumed that is what she was going for. As despicable as those two people were, I hope that was her intention. I'd hate to think Flynn thought that behavior was the norm. LOL

So, what are you all reading right now? Any good recommendation you'd like to share? I'm about to pick up Six of Crows. I'm halfway Six of Crows. Slow start, gets better toward the middle. Interesting world and interesting characters, real enough, it tries to avoid cliches and it succeeds most of the time. Sometimes the writer plays it safe with some characters, not matching their actions with their dark and dangerous description. I am still halfway though. Absolutely character driven, the plot is in the background. It compelled me to to check Bardugo's other works. They all share the same universe and the world building is intriguing. The supernatural element is quite interesting as well.

I'll be reading Soc of Crow now, hopefully start it this weekend. Glad to hear that it gets better, I did read the first chapter and it didn't engage me but I'll give it another try.

I finished the book. It does get better. The last chapters are the best. It lackss in "epic" though, everything feels small. It is a postcard basically. Small and sometimes the characters have the same voice, the point of view switches yet the voice remain the same, this troubled my reading as my mind was jarred by that. The "magic" element reminds me heavily of Last Airbender and Legend of Korra. Don't know if you are familiar with it. I am so going to try Abercrombie next. Everybody praises him, I have yet to try it. How was Stolen Songbird?

Reading Goat by Brad Land. It's a memoir, but it's so poorly written that I'm having trouble getting through it even though it's only 200 pages.

I also liked the legend of Korra. Stolen Songbird was very good, very engrossing especially at the beginning and at the end. It slowed down a bit in the middle but it picks up and ends very strongly. It's part of a trilogy and I'm about the order the other two books.

That sucks, there is nothing worst than forcing yourself to finish a book. I use to do it, because hated leaving books unfinished but I stopped that because the last time I tried it it caused me readers block for like a year.

Great ideas and interesting world, the focus was on the wrong elements imo, too much juvenile romance, contrived plots, character not having a character. I will check Stolen Songbird. The protagonist and I share the same birthname and you make it sound interesting.

It is interesting because it looks at trolls from a completely different perspective. The elements of magic are woven seamlessly throughout a somewhat social / political story. There is still romance but it doesn't become the real focus until about three-quarters through the book. I'll let you know how I like the sequels. Let me know how you like the squeal to Six of Crow. Too bad you didn't like the other series, I looked into it but the reviews were mixed so I decided to pass on it. Glad I did.

There's literally like 90 pages left. I could read that in under an hour normally

I started Stolen Songbird, must admit that the premise made me shudder, the kidnapping plot and the bonding. I was extremely happy that those elements were not romanticized at all but were seen as vile. The romance didn't bother me, I feared it would be pushed because of the bond but it clearly grew in spite of it and so slowly. The trolls and Cécile are quite interesting characters. I truly love Cécile's disposition to keep going, she is reckless but resourceful. I also loved Tristan, Marc, the twins and Anais. I want more Anais. She is mysterious. Also I grew to adore Tristan once he removed every mask of his. The King is positively terrifying, the feel of danger is real. I like the show don't tell approach or the story. The Queen/Duchesse... I fail to read her. She is a secret. I must admit that as soon as the Trolls weakness to iron was revealed, I know what they truly were. It is an interesting approach nonetheless. I am enjoying it.

It's not that I lack commitment, it's that there are so many books around nowadays and just a click away that to force myself through a book I dislike feels unfair. Lol I am the same with games. And with movies. Tv shows and so on.

I'm so glad you are licking it. I thought the author dealt well with the conditions that Cecile found herself in, nothing bothers me more when authors romanticize the creepy stuff. The ending is really good, the author leaves you wanting more. I'm expecting the next two books in the series to arrive in the mail today. Can't wait! I'm the same way, I hate leaving books unfinished. If I have to put a book aside and revisit it in a few weeks, I'll do that. I still haven't finished Goat, it's so sad. And with movies. Tv shows and so on. I'm like this with TV series as well. I have no patience when a show goes south. I have precious little time to watch TV and so I can't waste it on shows that are not worth my time.
