Yay I'm back on the Re-watch wagon! Hoping others will join me because it's gonna get real boring talking to myself in here! I watched Episode 3x01 and man, what a difference. I don't know what kind of secret meetings they had between Season 2 and 3 but it sure shows where they made some decisions to up the heat with the Season 3 premiere. WOW. Great episode. So much more intense and in line with what we will come to expect from Game of Thrones from Season 3 onward. Huge improvements and every scene was great and set up just the right amount of expectation and uncertainty in the viewer in the aftermath of Blackwater and the finale of Season 2 which was not as high as it should have been to carry the lower ranked season 2 onward. I especially liked meeting Tormund and Mance for the first time, nice callback to a time when they wanted to see Jon and the "crows" dead plus it immediately made us like Tormund when Jon clumsily kneels to him thinking he's the king beyond the wall which was hilarious. We also get Ser Barristan joining Team Dragon in this episode which was awesome and epic as it should have been. Dany's setup for Dracarys to come with that douchebag Kraznys was great too. So many great setup scenes this episode. Where I was faltering in interest with Season 2 (definitely not a great season) ... this episode yanked me right back into full attention and anticipation! If you fell off the re-watch boat, try again! Start with 3x01 and join us, we need discussion!

Yep, flawless episode, Season 3 really sends things into high gear, I loved the scenes with Jon and Mance, as well as Tormund. I also love the setup with Dany and Kranys. Tyrion was phenomenal as well, I thought the scene with he and Tywin was absolute perfection, Seeing Harrenhal butchered was cool too, plus we meet Qyburn. And Davos, is alive! I love how he immediately wants to kill Melisandre.

Nice set up.
I get so depressed seeing Barristan now, it's hard rewatching his scenes. It's a different feeling than the anger I get watching Stannis knowing what happens in the future. But Barristan is just sad.
Mance's introduction was one of my favorites. He just felt so important at the time as I had finally caught up with all the books before this season aired.
I remember being bummed about Arya not being in it when it first aired, but it's easier to take now.

Alright here goes.
Aaand they blindside me with a cold open. In which the Fist of the First Men fight is relayed to us underwhelmingly through the magic of sword clashing sound effects and WWs shrieking over a black screen. They'd more than make up for this loss/copout by giving an onscreen Hardhome in s5, so I won't make too big a fuss about this. But I think even casual viewers felt a tad gypped after how s2 finished, seeing only that much in beginning the next season. Also how the fuck could LC Mormont possibly expect Sam to have sent the ravens when he'd already sent him off into the tundra to collect poop to burn for their fires? That much said it's still an effective cold open. The image of the dead guy holding his own head and then the wight advancing with its axe and Ghost's intervention all work. As does LC Mormont's epic line before we cut to the theme music. So they didn't completely squander the potential. And I know there were MUCH MORE important sequences to focus the show's budget on in s3. But still. What could'd been...

Ah so Salladhor's sentimental about Matthos being Davos's son now...but that didn't stop him from making inappropriate advances upon the lad in ep. 202. Methinks he's sorry for something else...

NATHALIE. Here she debuted. Still unsurpassed as best-looking in the show.

There was a great bit of foreshadowing in this episode for Daenerys and her future Khalasar. While on the single ship she's transporting her tiny tribe of Dothraki on to Astapor after leaving Qarth, Dany and Jorah have a bit of a disagreement about how to gain an army to take Westeros. Her Dothraki are mostly sea-sick on the decks below and when Jorah remarks about it, she says: "They're the first Dothraki who have ever been on a ship. They followed me across the poison water. If they'll do it, others will and with a true Khalasar..."Jorah interrupts here here, to point out she can't just buy a Khalasar the way she's going to buy an unsullied army. He says: I loved this moment because I feel like on re-watch, I can imagine the gears spinning inside Daenerys' head about how she would prove her strength to a real Khalasar one day and the future would bring that opportunity. In Season 6 she was perfectly poised and acted with deliberate purpose by antagonizing the Khals while alone with them and having the doors barred. She had the whole thing planned out and after that resounding defeat she mounted her 'stallion' and proved her strength to the Khalasar she now rules ...

This really is a good episode. It's great meeting some characters for the first time and because I absolutely love the way Astapor goes down a few episodes later, it's great to see it begin again.
I feel a bit of nostalgia actually, we got so many new characters and it was so exciting! We're not gonna get that anymore with the show, pretty much all the big players are already on the board. (And sadly, many are already gone :/ )
