That was a good episode but yeah, it's getting confusing.
I was thinking that maybe Teresa's meddling with the code could have triggered something Arnold left behind and that's why all the old host are remembering their past loops. And also why they are becoming more sentient.

Hi guys, guess what? I just binged all 8 episodes in the last 3 days! It was tough not peeking in this thread but I didn't want any spoilers! Since we've put the GoT Re-watch project on hold until after the holidays I've decided to watch Westworld and catch up on Mr. Robot (as soon as I figure out where I'm going to get access to the episodes since I don't have cable login anymore). This show is great! I wasn't sure about it at first as like many I was somewhat confused and a little overwhelmed at the convoluted starting plot. In comparing it to Mr. Robot, I'd say that one's far easier to pick up quickly without a lot of confusion in what's going on at first, but gradually gets more twisted and unexpected whereas Westworld seems to start out very complicated and gradually gets easier to understand by episode 4 but then by 8 you're confused all over again haha. Anthony Hopkins just kills it as Mr. Ford, they couldn't have cast a better actor to fit the role perfectly. He has that just the right amount of sinister mixed with genius and mystery to keep you constantly guessing at his inner motivations. At first I was really struggling to buy the whole theme-park thing because as violent as they encourage the guests to be, I thought how the hell do the guests not kill one another when they can't tell a host from a guest? I get it that they can only shoot hosts and the guns are rigged but surely knives, explosives and other weapons could still harm other guests? Later, it became more apparent (when Teddy prevented the MiB from brandishing a knife at Ford) that the defense system of the park is very sophisticated to prevent harm to humans. So far I love all the characters and of course Maeve is now my favorite and Thandie Newton is smashing it out of the park with that character. My favorite scene so far was between Maeve and Hector when she gives him the numbers to the safe as he answers her questions and then cuts the bullet out of her stomach. That was a cool reveal moment for Maeve and her growing self awareness. She's also great with Sylvester and Felix on the outside too. As for the theories, I do believe it's possible there's 3 timelines going on with the hosts. I have read the comments here and I see it's not a popular theory but it makes the most sense considering how many times the hosts repeat through their loops, sometimes multiple times in one episode so they've likely been through them hundreds of times in a year. We have to realize the whole point of the story is to become more aware, just like the hosts are. We the audience are as ignorant as they are when it begins and we slowly become more aware of the reality with each episode. Dolores having a panic attack there at the end with William was definitely a nod to the audience being confused too. "When are we?" being the clue there. Dolores suddenly realizes her flashbacks and dreams are from different time periods in the life of the park. As for the William theory - I think it's interconnected with the three timelines theory and this was the clincher for me by the end of Season 8: The character (Angela?) played by Talulah Riley is seen three times in the show and the last time, she's found by the Man in Black and Teddy. MiB says: “It’s you. I thought that they’d retired you. I guess Ford never likes to waste a pretty face.” So how can she be a current welcome host to new guests like William before they enter the park proper and also be this bedraggled, beat up woman survivor they find in the wilds? They don't reset their storylines that quickly unless she was one of those pulled, wiped and reset due to the questionable update but why would she be, she wasn't inside the park playing a role there, she was just a greeter to the hotel facility where guests arrive before entering the park. She was ALSO in Dolores' dream of the town where the first hosts were being trained to dance and walk around playing their parts. Maeve was there as well. Angela walks by with a parasol and smiles at Dolores. She's clearly one of the original models too. That's why I think there's multiple timelines going on and also highly suspect William is the Man in Black 30 years earlier. This is where things get good for me and I'm fully hooked in.

^ I agree about the timelines now. I still don't get it though how the hosts in the previous timeline are just as well built as the ones later on. There should be a massive difference based on what we've heard the early hosts were like.

There should be a massive difference based on what we've heard the early hosts were like. Remember meeting the little boy version of Robert? Ford's family was created as hosts as a gift from Arnold and that's how they originally worked, very lifelike on the outside, but can open up to reveal the mechanical bits on the inside. They revised that and made them much more organic / biological on the inside because it was more believable for the guests (and apparently easier to repair?) ... but how/why that makes sense isn't really clear to me. The only way you'd see the insides is if you hacked one up to pieces or disemboweled it or something. The outer skin layer apparently contains realistic blood vessels and blood anyways.

But we've seen people talk about the early hosts and say they were a lot less human-like and could be easily spotted as hosts, right? And still when Willian came to WW and met the Angela-character who Envie talks about it wasn't obvious that she was a host, she looked just like the hosts do in the MIB timeline to me at least. So that's my problem, not the actual "How did they update the hosts". Also I don't notice any difference with Dolores and that bothers me, in 30 years there should have been major improvements, the Dolores 30 years ago shouldn't be the same she is with MIB. I don't know, maybe there are moments with Dolores and William that would be telling if I went back and rewatched but having watched just once I don't see a difference in her.

katjushka - The differences don't seem to be physical ones, just behavior and inner mechanics. I remember a comment from someone (maybe Bernard) that the early models weren't believable enough because of more robotic like behavior so I take that to mean it was just a psychological thing more than physical. --- On a completely different topic of the show, I am bowing down to Ramin Djawadi as a complete God to HBO and gift to us via GoT and West World. The man is a genius of composing and I have the theme song to West World stuck in my head constantly now! Here he is playing it live on an old upright piano similar to the player pianos in the show. www.indiewire.com/2016/11/westworld-composer-ramin-djawadi-plays-main-title-theme-watch-1201749193/

^ Ok, maybe I've just understood it wrong and been left with the idea that the original hosts were quite robotic in movement etc so they were pretty easy to spot.

Geez, just when I thought I had a good handle on the timeline thing... great video moiaf ! I've watched some of his other theory videos, but not that one. He has a compelling argument video for and against the William=MiB theory too that now makes me doubt the certainty I thought I had on that! I think the only people more confused than Dolores (and most of the hosts) is US, the viewers! I think tonight, being the penultimate episode of season 1, is going to have some really big reveals happen since it seems they are following the Game of Thrones format!
