I finished episode 6 and QUEEN EL just saved Mike and Dustin and now they are all hugging each other. I need a minute. I'm gonna take a break and get some work done now, but I guess I'll finish the season tonight.

I'm trying not to spoil anything and I'll be using spoiler tags for obvious spoilers, but if you don't want to know anything about Stranger Things, then you might want to finish the season first before reading this. What happens if you mix E.T., Alien, Stephen King, The X-Files, X-Men, Star Wars, The Lord of the Rings, Twin Peaks, The Goonies and even Japanese survival-horror game Silent Hill? You get something like Stranger Things. I confess I was skeptical at first whether this weird mix would work out. It could have felt bloated and messy and like an overlong citation deprived of any originality whatsoever. Well, the good news is that it doesn't. The homage blends in perfectly with the original content. Despite the use of a lot of different ideas from already existing movies, books and video games, the show never loses its own characters and their story out of sight. The homage is there to create nostalgia and to play with expectations (a few typical genre tropes are deconstructed or put into an unexpected context!). The audience never gets distracted by it. Instead we feel a comfortable familiarity while covering new ground with these characters. Speaking of characters, they are the heart and soul of Stranger Things. We follow three different age groups: the adults, the teenagers and the kids. As groups they have their own storylines, but at the same time individual characters of these groups also have their own background and story progression. Even minor characters feel real and have their distinct fears and worries (e.g. Nancy's friend Barbara). The two main adults played by Winona Ryder and David Harbour do a wonderful job of carrying the show. They also have very rich scenes, thematically: what is parenthood? What does it mean to be a good parent? Matthew Modine as Dr. Martin Brenner is almost the antithesis of them. His creepy demeanour around Eleven is unsettling. When she calls him "dad", it's nothing short of heartbreaking to see. This is emphasized even more strongly when the mother figure of the show - Winona's character - is able to soothe Eleven like Brenner never could. The parents of course need children and they are the best part of Stranger Things. However at the beginning of the show, the teenagers, particularly Nancy and Jonathan, are the most cliché-ridden characters, but that very quickly changes when they start to get involved in the action. They become very well-written characters in their own right. Both Nancy and Jonathan (but also Steve) start off as clichés but end up being multilayered three-dimensional characters. Of course there is some high school drama here and there, but it never dominates the action and it never becomes annoying. Unlike a lot of the teenage protagonists from the 80s horror flicks these characters are based on, the teenagers in Stranger Things do not often engage in stupid decisions and when they do, it makes a lot of sense that they would. Their characterization is thought out very well. The true stars, however, are the children. Just like in Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings it's the hobbits ( ) that become the unlikely heroes (with a little bit of help from their teenage and adult friends of course). The show's focus on its child-actors - despite being for grown-ups - is remarkable. There are not many TV shows that are able to do this succesfully (minus Game of Thrones maybe). There are two main reasons why it works here: the first one is that the child-actors are really good and they can easily carry huge chunks of the episodes all by themselves. Especially Millie Bobby Brown is to be mentioned here. She outshines everyone, even the adults. It's hard to believe that she is only 12 years old. She can jump between being the vulnerable little girl and the (almost scary) badass just with a subtle change of expression in her eyes. She is that good. The second reason is the writing. These kids actually talk like kids and not like adults writing dialogue for kids. They goof around, say mean things to each other and forget about all of it seconds later. They are carefree but not stupid. They understand things that adults don't, but never lose their childlike enthusiasm. And most important of all - they are always individual characters and are never reduced to being just "the children". Mike, Eleven, Lucas, Dustin (he cracks me up! ) and even Will all get their own moments to shine. Finally, I have to mention the cinematography. It is definitely inspired by a lot of different horror and sci-fi movies but as I said earlier, all these puzzle pieces make up a very satisfying whole. It feels like something Spielberg would have directed in the 80s but it's not. In fact, it generally feels like cinema but it's not. It is able to take elements from classic film-making but put it into the serialized nature of a TV show and it does so seamlessly. The music creates a wonderful tense atmosphere and the crew was able to recreate the 80s in a way that it almost becomes a character in itself. This show is beautiful, scary, touching, tense and extremely entertaining. 10/10.

I've watched it twice, but yeah Eleven is also my favorite character. The writers said they were doing a S2 and promised justice for Barb haha so hopefully we hear that it's renewed soon.

I first thought it was a coincidence, but then I google'd it and apparently the Duffer brothers are huge fans of the games and included it on purpose. How cool is that?

Yeah the show needs to be renewed. Netflix promised and... I think Netflix pretty much always renew their shows at least once, don't they? If Marco Polo and Sense8 got a second chance, Stranger Things s2 should be a sure thing. (Which isn't a knock on those two other shows which I also watched, but it seems like Stranger Things was much more successful.)

And Duffer Brothers seem to have had very detailed ideas about the Upside Down and stuff that they could pitch to Netflix (this from an interview btw). Not sure how they judge its success but critically I don't think I've seen any major outlets bashing it

Even thinking about this TV show (Stranger Things) still gives me all the feels. By far my favourite thing from this year so far.
