I am a tile artist with a home studio and kiln room. I hand-carve original designs in raw wet clay, make a mold from the prototype so the design can be replicated in different colors and glazes. I also hand-paint tiles and murals using the majolica technique. Here, a friend who loves woodworking made a table with my Egyptian scroll mural as the tabletop. This is an original high-relief tile in progress, just the very rough beginning. I have cut the basic shape into the clay, but then from this, I will work for many hours with tiny brushes dipped in water, plus small carving tools to smooth out, define and refine the raised image. Sometimes, it takes me 2 or 3 days to carve a single prototype tile. It's important to be sure I get the prototype tile as perfect as I can make it, because of course when I make a mold of it and then produce more tiles from that mold, any flaw in the prototype tile will be right there in every new tile made from that mold. And here is the finished product--the knight tile above is at the center left in the finished fireplace. I also write how-to books explaining the various procedures, tips and techniques. Here are a couple books from the series:

mandzipop , Whoa, gorgeous photos!! And what is that stunning place? I want to live there!! iheartseverus Thank you It is about 2 miles from where I live (South Yorkshire/Derbyshire border). It is an old house, it is used occasionally for weddings but the rest of the time people just come and go to appreciate the beauty. There is a cafe and the grounds and the upkeep is looked after by local volunteers. Even the parking is free. It has ponds and wild gardens, formal gardens, woodland. I took about 400 pictures but it was very windy and most didn't come out because of it. Depending on how I feel in the next few days, I might pop out to Chatsworth House. It is about 12 miles away. I'm not wasting my money on the gardens there as I'll get too tired too quickly to have time to properly appreciate them. However, I can take pictures of the house and surrounding scenery. It is where Pride and Prejudice and The Duchess were filmed.

mandzipop, those pictures are gorgeous! The one of the bee on the flower is just stunning! You mentioned you like to take pictures of bees, and I wondered if there were any particular reason for that. My surname begins with a B, and my family always used the bee as a symbol when naming a boat or a vacation home (that was the fad when I was growing up, and a little plaque beside the door with the name and symbol on it). So, bees are special to me for that reason. Please post pictures you take at Chatsworth. You're so lucky to live in such a beautiful and historic part of the world!

I like bees because they are really easy to take pictures of. If you get them whilst they are collecting pollen, then they tend to stay still for enough time to get a couple of good shots it. Bumble bees are really good because if you get close enough you can catch the hair too. They are usually too busy getting drunk on pollen to bother you so you are unlikely to get stung. They are also very cute. I'll see if I can find some pictures I took a couple of years ago of some bumble bees around some blackberries. They were very professional in their posing for the camera.

mandzipop, fabulous photos, beautifully framed! You really should head over to the Creative Writing thread and read my entry about self-publishing, then put together a beautiful little photography book just called 'Bees.' Just page after page of your gorgeous photos, a nice, or funny or clever caption accompanying each photo, some captions being quotes from famous authors or poets, maybe a short forward about bees. But mostly, your beautiful photos. Seriously, think about it! Your work is gorgeous!

I don't think they are that fantastic, but my lack of fear of bees allows me to get close.
