I agree with konradsmith this was a very nicely flowing and cinematic premiere that meets my expectations for ending the long wait we had to endure! And as he said, there were a couple of clunky moments set up to remind the audience where everything is at and setting the stage but that's to be expected in the first episode. A solid 9 from me.

Really hard to give a rating to this episode and probably all of them for this year. Too spoiled.
Not surprisingly, I enjoyed the Northern scenes the best (Bran @wall and Ned Jr. (Jon) ruling. I believe the little scene with Arya with the Lannister army is a seed for her humanity to somewhat return.
I really believe Sansa is looking out for Jon's well being, even though Jon's decision was the right one IMO.

I give it a 9. On the scale of personal enjoyment, it was closer to a 10 - I absolutely loved it. I'm sure that some of that was just my happiness at being back in the world, but even after sleeping on it, I'm still buzzing. I'm only really refraining from giving it that top grade because I recognize that Game of Thrones has another gear that it's more than capable of reaching, and this episode was laying the groundwork to summit that peak later this season.
Overall, I think this is my second favorite season premiere, after "Two Swords". We're off to a great start!

The episode is a 9 for me.
Every scene is very good. A few moments that went on but does not detract from them.
The Hound, Basic, and Thoros scene is one of the show best moments.

A generous 8. ++ BOTB scenes were great. Great to see the continuity from S4 and Sandor's character development. This makes me appreciate not bringing LSH on the show. + North was pretty solid as well. Good dialogues. Even though a 10-year old girl bossing experienced lords about war was slightly irritating. She was a brilliant character last season, but they need to stop milking it. + Euron/Jack Sparrow was better, but still needs improvement. +/- It was nice to see that Lannisters have some nice blokes in their ranks as well. But Ed Sheeran did feel kinda off. The song was brilliant - Arya killing all the Freys. Is she a bit too overpowered now? - Lannisters or anyone not taking advantage of a massive fuck-off fortress that has massive strategical importance left abandoned by Stannis.. and Dany leading the way sounds a bit dangerous. --- Sam was a total waste this episode. The shit montage was absolutely unnecessary. Overall a slow episode (a premier is always slow), but a good start! Roll on 7x02.

9.
Good + Everything about the BwB scenes ("Bald cunt", Sandor's redemption arc, the vision in the flames, gravedigging) + CLEGANEBOWL hype + Euron redeemed himself from 6x05 + The end of House Frey + The scene with Arya and the Lannister soldiers + Sam's shit montage + The foreshadowing (hopefully) with Jaime on the Fingers and Cersei on the Neck + The very chilling scene with the Army of the Dead marching in the snowstorm + The Winterfell scenes (Jon ruling and Sansa with LF) + Dany finally coming to Westeros Bad (Pretty much just nitpicks) - The scenes with Bran felt rather... lacking. There should've been more of him and Edd. - Arya the master assassin - Lyanna Mormont. She was badass in 6x07, now she is just annoying IMO - No one garrisoning Dragonstone after Stannis left - Sam not thinking when Stannis told him about dragonglass - Mountain doesn't look that intimidating anymore - Jorah jumpscare

Changing my vote to a 10. Just finished my second rewatch to make sure I wasn't imagining things. And no: it's amazing.
This is the second or third 10 for Podeswa, after Kill the Boy and possibly Home. But this episode is better written than either of those. I've already expressed my love for the miraculous BwB segment, but the Dragonstone ending sealed the deal this time. Podeswa takes his sweet time to show us every cave, every room in that castle. He gives this huge epic moment great intimacy, and directs Emilia Clarke beautifully through it. Another director would have gone all bombastic with this stuff, but his approach really floored me. And since I can't find a weakness in the episode, a 10 it is.

D&D were smart to give him this episode. Scenes like the BWB, the Frey Massacre and the Dragonstone landing fit Podeswa like a glove. Can't wait to see what he does with the finale

Can't wait to see what he does with the finale Podeswa is very good with atmospheric moments as konradsmith has pointed out in the past and it's always heightened with Ramin's soundtrack and the cinematography. When Arya first entered the Hall of Faces, Sansa and Theon walking through the godswood to the "Grey Wedding", Tyrion and Jorah traveling through Old Valyria, Mel's age reveal, just to name a few.

These were all phenomenal scenes with very atmospheric and emotional feel to them. Podeswa made that gravedigger scene absolutely stunning and it pulled out all the feels. Dany's arrival on Dragonstone was one long rollercoaster of highs and lows... both sorrowful and uplifting at the same time and not a word spoken until the end. Ramin's music helped a lot but paired perfectly with each step of her journey up to the castle. A fitting homecoming that will remain iconic in the show.

8 Season openers are always off a few notches because getting back into the rhythm of things can be pretty jarring. Like last year, the time frame is pretty skewered. Dany and co. arrive on Dragonstone, and Jorah is already in a cell at the Citadel, both long journeys. Sam is also set up in the Citadel (though admittedly, that wouldn't take too long) while in the North, Jon is still in post battle reorganisation of the North and Bran and Meera have only just reached the Wall which they were virtually next to at the end of last series, whilst WaldArya is still hosting a party for the Frey's which makes me wonder how long is meant to have passed. I understand the need for time trimming, but still, that time frame is necessary because like the start of last series, it makes the transition a lot smoother. That said, this series opener was far superior to last years. Big plus for the Dragonstone set. The increased budget went miles in redesigning it, and re imagining the grim foreboding isle as sunny and warm was certainly a beautiful visual if only a little too fairytale and idyllic. It was still nice to see the full scale of the castle and not just the dusty old Stan-Cave. The best part of the episode was the Hound and the Brotherhood. It felt like a massive character shift from the agressive and moody "lots of cunts" Hound to the being the only person who bothered about burying the dead. It was a nice character moment. All in all, it put the series on track, but the issue is more teething and readjusting after a pretty long absence from the show. It doesn't smoothly connect all the dots, but it does a pretty good job.

This is a really good point though I've long ago stopped trying to figure out the timeline which has never actually been stated as equal for all characters and locations on the map. That's tough when it looks like a lot of time has passed (ie Dany's voyage or Jorah in a cell at the Citadel already) for some characters and hardly any at all (Jon still meeting with the northerners post battle). Arya did say, as Walder, that they already had a feast less than a fortnight ago... so we know that it's been less than two weeks from the time she slit Walder's throat to the feast where she poisons the rest of the Frey men. Assuming Daenerys had already left Essos before Arya killed Walder, we can guess it's been a few weeks, maybe a month at most since everything went down at the end of Season 6. In my brain, I've just accepted the fact that these stories are not all playing out on exactly the same timeline. It's easier to give the handwave of suspending disbelief.
