Quite a mixed bad episode.
Hated Dorne still.
Enjoy the fighting pits scenes. Jorah might be old, but he's a bad ass, and Tyrion trying to get out of his chains - priceless.
Olenna and Littlefinger, still an odd couple after all these years.

Nice scenes to start with, Jon leaving with Tormund and Aemon talking to Gilly and Sam about Egg. Poor maester Aemon Such a sad scene but beautiful. He was the blood of the dragon <3 I love that bit with Sansa and Theon when Alfie finally makes eye contact with her, man, I really thought he'd do what she asked Stannis remains stubborn and blinded by boobs. I hate these scenes because of what happens to Shireen but I do actually think that the show does a pretty good job at portraying the dire situation he's in and the growing desperation. Tyrion is such a survivor, he manages to be bought alongside Jorah and to free himself from chains just so he can be in the right place at the right time. And Jorah the fucking Andal, what a champ. Tyrion and Dany finally meeting The High Sparrows monologues are boring, Jonathan Pryce is a treasure but I just can't be bothered here. Such a long, boring talk before getting to the point - Lancel.

The High Sparrows monologues are boring, Jonathan Pryce is a treasure but I just can't be bothered here. Such a long, boring talk before getting to the point - Lancel. The redeeming point of that entire scene was watching Cersei's face as she goes from bland polite to WTF to blind anger. Lena really outdid herself this season in showing us Cersei's fall from grace.

Much better episode than the last. Dorne still sucks, love the Wall scenes, RIP Maester Aemon... Liked the scenes with Littlefinger and the Queen of Thorns. Cersei, as usual was brilliant. Good episode.

I really disagree about HS's monologue. For me that was one of the best monologues in the show, I often quote that part in real life. Strip away the gold and the ornaments, knock down the statues and the pillars- and this is what remainsAnd great quote from his scene with Olenna: A lifetime of wealth and power has left you blind in one eye. You are the few, we are the many. And when the many stop fearing the few...

And great Cersei's quote from this episode. I would do anything for you. Anything to keep you from harm. I would burn cities to the ground.

A very strong episode, but it all boils down to that one High Sparrow/Cersei scene, already a classic in its own right. I think it's one of the 3 best acted scenes in the entire show (my other favorites are Michelle Fairley's last stand and Stephen Dillane's talk with Shireen right before he burns her.)
What Jonathan Pryce does with his voice, his body language in this scene, how the revelations keep coming pouring in is incredible. The way he plays the High Sparrow, there is no doubt this truly is a holy man. The real deal. But at the same time there is a sense of incredible power and danger to him. It's hard to pinpoint why he's so unnerving when there is nothing outwardly sinister in Pryce's acting. He's just amazing to watch. Lena does some of her best work too just by listening to him.
Season 5 had its ups and downs for me but I'll always remember it fondly for the Cersei/Faith Militant plot. It's truly great, and there had never been a wildcard quite like it before.

Thought all the pieces of the episode were well woven together, good solid 'meat' in them all, and it didn't seem 'chopped up'. My favorite was seeing Tyrion kick ass in order to get himself bought along with Jorah. His ingenuity never fails to shine for me, his humor, his intelligence, his quick wit, and Dinklage's portrayal of him couldn't be more brilliant. As everyone has said, Lena's scene with the HS could not have been better, or better acted. So well said, Lady Sansa's Direwolf :
I'll love D&D forever for leaving that "Egg, I dreamed that I was old" line in.
I always love the "I am" scenes. Tommen, "I am the King!", more full of anguish and helplessness rather than anger, but nonetheless he does quickly get to the point where he says, "I'll take back the Sept and kill every last one of them." Cersei's "I am the Queen!" was a perfect mirroring of Margaery crying out that same thing last episode Dany's "I am a Queen, not a butcher" defining her code of conduct, not of arrogance. We got Ghost! And Sam's "Oh, my" is priceless. Once Cersei is taken away by Unella, I see the barest shadow of satisfaction and "gotcha" in the HS's expression. He sounds good, but I'm not so sure... Loved the WF scenes. Sansa telling Reek who he really is. She's finally broken when she sees the Northern woman flayed. The 'bastard exchange' with Ramsay is great. Gifts: Tyrion to Dany, the gift of hope to Sansa (with Jon as LC at the Wall), Gilley's gift to Sam, the gift of the antidote to Bronn. A question, though. What does LF mean when he tells Olenna "I have a gift for you, the same one I gave to Cersei - a handsome man." What does that mean?

A question, though. What does LF mean when he tells Olenna "I have a gift for you, the same one I gave to Cersei - a handsome man." What does that mean? I think he gave the squire/male prostitute to Cersei to trap Loras, and then Littlefinger give Lancel Lannister's information to Olenna. Specifically what Lancel did for and with his close cousin, Cersei.

Specifically what Lancel did for and with his close cousin, Cersei. Ohhhhhhh. I should have known that LF's gift to Cersei was Olyvar's 'testimony', had forgotten all about his being LF's spy from the very beginning. Thank you!Still wasn't quite sure how Lancel could benefit Olenna, since Lancel gave his info directly to HS, so I googled it (when in doubt, right? ). Found a Reddit post listing lots of possibilities, but still not sure. The Reddit post mentions it's possible we won't know the rest of that piece of the story yet, that it might have been pulled from TWOW. Anyway, interesting read, if anyone is interested. https://www.reddit.com/r/asoiaf/comments/37bcwz/spoilers_all_littlefingers_gift_to_olenna_a/

Great moments this episode: * Sam gives Jon Snow the bag of dragonglass. Great moment of foreshadowing "I hope you don't need them."* Dying Maester Aemon talking about "Egg" (King Aegon) ... "Take him south Gillyflower, before it's too late."
* Theon bringing food to Sansa who is looking horrible and abused. Their confrontation is so well done. "Your name is Theon Greyjoy"* Sam and Gilly sitting with Aemon until his last moment... "Egg. I dreamed ... that I was old." And what a beautiful scene for Aemon's funeral * Ramsay's walk on the wall of Winterfell with Sansa. I loved that moment she told him he was still a bastard! "The trueborn will always have the stronger claim" (sadly he gets the last word with the flayed old woman) * Unmovable Stannis. "We march to victory or we march to defeat. But we go forward, only forward." Melisandre trying to convince him to sacrifice Shireen ... "I have seen myself walk along the battlements of Winterfell and I have seen the flayed man banners lowered to the ground" ... this is a cool thing to hear from Mel on re-watch since we know that scene will actually happen later but without Stannis. How could Melisandre have mistaken Stannis for Jon Snow?* Tyrion and Jorah sold to the Meereen slaver (I loved Tyrion beating up the other slave to prove his worth) * Olenna and The High Sparrow meeting and negotiating about the situation and Loras/Margaery * Tommen trying to stand up to Cersei and the situation, having a tantrum to Mom "I am the King!" (and there's nothing you can do) ... Tommen's weak helplessness is painful. He truly was an innocent pawn. **Cersei: "I would do anything for you to keep you from harm. I would burn cities to the ground." Ouch that's a painful bit of foreshadowing for Cersei and Tommen. * Bronn singing "The Dornishman's Wife" in the prison cell was great, though I'm still not crazy about the Sandsnakes and poison moment. Boobs were the save, I guess. * LF meeting Olenna in his trashed brothel. "Together we murdered a king." I have a gift for you. The same kind I gave Cersei. A handsome young man. * Meereen was great, Dany and Hizdahr watching the fights and Jorah coming out to impress and defeat the others without killing them. Taking off his helm. That moment ... "I brought you a gift!"
* Cersei being drawn right into the High Sparrow's trap was delicious ... and her realization she's in that trap. Then repeating what Tommen said in her desperation: "I AM THE QUEEN!" Wondering what happened to Unella? ... "Look at me! Look at my face. It's the last thing you'll see before you die ... " (so yeah, I think she's still alive down there in Cersei's dungeon)

With all this Podeswa-praising I've been doing on the basis of knack for atmosphere, what I have to commend Sapochnik for is his boldness. I had strong doubts about him coming into s5 knowing he'd done that movie Repo Men and some other stuff that didn't interest me. And yet he begins the episode with a bunch of shots of horses being saddled, people warming their hands over braziers, swords being sheathed and extras glaring at Jon. That's a confidant way to begin his run on GoT. He gives us a lot of detail but also fragments the way we're informed of it. Which came in handy in his handling of Hardhome, the Snowbowl and 610.

Which isn't to say that he doesn't do atmosphere well either. He's great at that too. By just showing shots of the shivering troops in WF and Stannis's camp, he evokes instantly a ton of what GrrM took hundreds of words to get at.
