It was a great episode overall. Cersei struggling to maintain. Arya learning what being a FM really entails.
And Hardhome. Our first good look at what's coming for the realms of men.
Another episode I can watch over and over.

I haven't watched Hardhome (or any episodes in S5 or S6) since the first time 2 years ago - have no idea why, just got distracted, but in spite of the fact that I knew what was coming, I was so tense during the whole Hardhome scene, ready to jump out of my skin. Just loved the character Karsi, crushed that she didn't last longer. Best line, "I f-g hate Thenns!" But when she put her children in the boat and promised she'd be right behind them, I knew she was a goner. One of the creepiest moments that I'd completely forgotten about was when she looked up and saw the wight children in front of her. Every moment of the whole thing just kept hitting fast and furious. The horrible sounds the wights made, breaking through wood with just their arms, the one that still kept coming with an arrow straight through his skull, the way the flames of the burning hut just kind of died away when the WW Commander walked into the hut. The 4 Horsemen [ref. Apocalypse, gotta be] up on the ridge and the wights throwing themselves off the ridge, nonsensically until we saw them resurrect, unfazed, at the bottom. The sudden and complete shattering of the WW Commander. And the NK . . . The music was perfect for this part, and also perfect while the credits scrolled at the end. One other thing I noticed about HH that I haven't before is that early on, instead of Winter is Coming, Jon said The Long Night is coming. And I kept thinking of Old Nan.
The rest of the episode pales for me in comparison, even though other scenes were great. The way Qyburn knew just what wording to use with Cersei, Cersei lapping the water off the floor, the exchange between Tyrion and Dany, especially when she takes his wine away with that "While you can still speak in complete sentences" line. One part I had completely missed before - in the middle of Dany's Wheel speech, just before Tyrion says, "That's a beautiful dream", he actually winks at Dany!!! Whoa!
Great moment between Sansa and Theon (she did pull him out of Reek for a bit), and so happy for Sansa -- learning Jon was LC at the Wall last episode and this one learning that Bran and Rickon were still alive!
Watching Olly this episode talking to Sam. I was so focused on Olly being angry and traitorous by the end of S5, but here he stands 'unmasked' - just a little boy, afraid that if the wildlings are let in they'll slit the NW throats in the night while they sleep.
I love Thormund. And Wun Wun. And Edd.

Here's a rendering of Hardhome by UK Artist Andy Fairhurst that iheartseverus posted on the Quiet Isle last summer. If you look under the NK's left arm, a little further down and to the left, there's a WW staring directly back at us.

there's a WW staring directly back at us. That's a child wight and not WW, who i thought were seriously creepy. I think for the first time, show lived up to the horror aspects in the novels.

This episode, along with Dance of Dragons, redeemed season 5 the first time and I stand by that statement. When the NK raised his arms and the army joined him on the shorelines, all I heard my son say was, "Oh Shit."
Oh Shit indeed.
Again, the acting is spot on. Sansa and Theon. Jon and the Wildlings. Cersei. One of the top episodes of the series, as far as I am concerned.

One of my all time favorite episodes, from Torrmen owning the Lord of Bones, to the bad ass battle that ensued. Flawless. Finally seeing Valyrian steel kill a walker was awesome! I loved the stare down between the NK and Jon.

Ah, finally time to watch this Starts of really well with Tyrion and Dany, Tyrion slays the scene. Two terrible children of two terrible fathers Arya and Braavos are at their finest in this episode as well. Cersei being stripped of all her power is a beautiful thing to watch, Lena is brilliant again and Cersei's desperation is so well acted. Jamie not coming to help her, Tommen not coming to help her.. But she has to find a way to survive anyway. And then we get to hardhome. I was so hyped for this episode when it first aired and then it turned out to be even more awesome than I'd thought. What a risk Jon and co. take going there, hoping to convince the other clans to side with them. Jon is a leader, his speech is really good and with Tormund as his cheerleader they make a great team. The actual actionscene here is just perfect, it's so ominous and intense. The panic slowly rising among the wildlings, the seemingly unstoppable wights and to crown it all Jon facing and slaying the Walker. Shiiiit, I love this stuff. Jon running for battle instead of saving himself from what seems like a sure death The battle feels so chaotic, scary and desperate. And just as things seem hopeless.. Longclaw. It's been a while since I last watched this episode and I loved it even more than I remembered.

SO FUCKING GOOD. Tyrion and Dany was gold. Cersei in prison was great. The scene where Unella sneers at her as she dumps the water on the ground makes me not feel bad for her knowing what comes later. The music as Cersei sinks to her knees and whimpers as she licks the floor was really beautiful. Arya was good. The scenes seemed to go by fairly quickly, which is all I ever want from an Arya scene in seasons 5 and 6. HARDHOME. HARDHOME. SO WELL DONE. It's not a traditional battle, which is kind of awesome to behold. I mean, this was also awesome to behold, but at the same time, not. Since they first land, there's an ominous feeling. They ratchet up the suspense, and the spookiness. I liked how, as others said, the whole thing was so chaotic and desperate and hopeless. There was no light at the end of this. This was a massacre, and you either had to get out or die. There is literally no victory in this. It felt very claustrophobic and uneasy. When the Night King raises his hands and the dead rise with them, I still get chills lol. WUN WUN, TO THE SEA!!!

The opening scene in this episode remains one of my all time favorites ... the emotion in Emilia and Iain and Peter were top notch acting in this one...
Arya learning her trade (Lanna the oyster merchant) was great, beautiful.
Cersei and the 'confess' bits haha. Later Qyburn visits and lets her know the charges "The work continues" being awesome!
Theon and Sansa confrontation. "Tell me Theon, tell me they weren't your brothers!" a powerful moment that gives Sansa what she needs... hope.
Roose and Ramsay planning battle against Stannis. "A feast for crows" and "20 good men" haha.
Tyrion and Dany together, such a great scene, they have awesome chemistry. "Two terrible children..."
"I'm not going to stop the wheel, I'm going to break the wheel" ... YASS MY QUEEN!
Cersei's threats to Unella ... SO GOOD.
Sam, Gilly, Ollie ... "I've been worrying about Jon for years. He always comes back!"
And finally, Hardhome. Damn what an amazing 30 minutes, HALF the episode dedicated to this insane piece of work.
Jon Tormund and Edd watching helplessly from their boat as everyone onshore is slaughtered, then of course the Night King and his epic "Come At Me Crow" moment. Amazing. And when the camera pulls back to show the thousands on the shore standing silently ... the army of the dead... it was a very powerful ending.

So I never got time to do a longer review (with gifs!) of this episode. It goes without saying this was one of the best of Season 5, but I decided to come back and touch on my favorite scene in the episode and probably one of my favorites of the entire season overall. Tyrion's amazing speech to Dany. As a huge Targaryen/Daenerys fan, you can see why Tyrion's amazing speech to convince Queen Daenerys to consider his offer to advise her was one of my all time favorites: [Tyrion] When I was a young man, I heard a story about a baby born During the worst storm in living memory. She had no wealth, no lands, no army, Only a name and a handful of supporters, Most of whom probably thought they could Use that name to benefit themselves. They kept her alive, Moving her from place to place, Often hours ahead of the men Who'd been sent to kill her. She was eventually sold off to Some warlord on the edge of the world And that appeared to be that. And then a few years later, The most well-informed person I knew Told me that this girl Without wealth, lands, or armies Had somehow acquired all three In a very short span of time, Along with three dragons. He thought she was our best, Last chance to build a better world. I thought you were worth Meeting at the very least.
This scene is so beautifully moving and in a quiet sort of way, shows such strong emotion from Tyrion, Jorah and Daenerys. I love the way they gave Tyrion his typical witty ability to sway others with his words but without the usual jokes other than some sarcasm about how he's the Greatest Lannister Killer of all time... The second half of Hardhome often overshadows these amazing moments and this is one worth remembering.
