Robb is an idiot too but he was a teenage idiot. Rhaegar was a grown ass man who (like TheMadQueen said) humiliated his wife in public and ran off with someone. Roslyn was no less humiliated and Robb publicly humiliated her. Rosalyn wasn't actually married to him and had two of his children. I think Elia's was more severe.

Robb is an idiot too but he was a teenage idiot. Rhaegar was a grown ass man who (like TheMadQueen said) humiliated his wife in public and ran off with someone. I don't think Robb gets a pass just because he was younger. He was at war and he made a vow to marry a Frey girl in exchange for passage. He was man enough to call his bannermen and start marching south so he's man enough to make a decision to marry another girl and then parade her in front of the people he insulted. That was really foolish. Yeah Rhaegar was a grown man and already married, that makes his deed a lot worse I'll agree but they still mirror one another in stupid decisions that caused war and betrayal for love. That's GRRM's favorite thing and finding out Rhaegar actually annulled his marriage doesn't surprise me at all. It doesn't make me hate Rhaegar because of it. It makes the whole thing all that more foolish and stupid. I'm glad Jon Snow lived though!

Roslyn was no less humiliated and Robb publicly humiliated her. Rosalyn wasn't actually married to him and had two of his children. I think Elia's was more severe. Why? Betrothal is tantamount to marriage in Medieval society. She might not have children, but what about how it made her look to be jilted by someone who publicly promised to marry her? It's the same situation, save for the presence of children. Robb might have been a teenager, but he was old enough to lead armies into battle and be a king. He was old enough to know what he did was wrong.

You can't un-have kids with someone. I'm not saying what Robb did was right, it wasn't. But Elia's betrayal was far worse than Rosayn's. We've seen betrothals broken in the books/show. But Rhaegar decided his wife and children weren't good enough for this prophecy and he chose another woman in public. That has to sting far more than Rosalyn who never even knew Robb.

Does anyone else feel like Gendry is a little retconned? He talked about how his father just "grabbed his mother instead of the woman next to her." now he's all #StagPride? What is this? He's been spending time with the Broratheons. He has had a lot of time to think. For him meeting Jon may have been like meeting a kindred spirit. He's been waiting for years for something to happen, waiting for his purpose he felt he had and Davos walks in. Finds out in a boat ride the world is ending and he's on team Dany/Jon. He also wants to prove himself which has always been a Gendry mo, he's a bit like Jon.

so my dad is trying to convince himself that the use of the word "annulment" means that something about elia and rhaegar's marriage was deemed illegal but the faith but now he's just thinking that maybe rhaegar was just a little selfish

I've known about the annulment for 10 months and it still leaves a bad taste in my mouth. Fuck Rhaegar! Best thing Robert ever did was caving his chest in Amen I've known about the annulment for 10 months and it still leaves a bad taste in my mouth. Fuck Rhaegar! Yaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaassss. I'm sorry, but I hate how romanticized Lyanna and Rhaegar gets. Rhaegar was a category 5 asshole. Truer words. I've known about the annulment for 10 months and it still leaves a bad taste in my mouth. Fuck Rhaegar! he really was a cunt, wasn't he? You damn straight he was.

I don't know, I think Rhaegar was inherently selfish. He probably did lust/love Lyanna a bit, but I think his main concern was likely getting a son with that prophecy since he apparently deemed Aegon "not good enough"

Anywho, Rhaegar being a sack of shit aside -
I'm assuming Gendry not mentioning Arya is a deliberate choice. Do you think they'd actually go for a romance route for those two next season?

I don't think that's a fair assessment of his character, given what those who have known him have said.

If it was just about having a baby with Lyanna Stark he could have done so and went home. He loved her though. He died with her name on his lips. And Robert got a crown he didn't want and Cersei for a wife. Rhaegar won.
