I just did, the major scenes that is, hence the re-rate. My 9 came right after my first viewing, hence the hype. BUT THE HYPE GROWS WITH EACH VIEWING. ALWAYS GOES UP. NEVER GOES DOWN. I agree, but this was an exception to the rule. I was blinded by the rule of cool, Jon's epic squad, Gendry's return and all the awesome shit we got, but after the thrill of it died out I finally got to reflect about all the flaws. It pains me to see it happen, but tonight the hype went down after rewatch

One should rewatch before re-rating. Not reconsider. Art and entertainment can't merely be reconfigured in one's head through silent analysis. They need to be experienced again to be re-assessed. Maaaaaan. I just did, the major scenes that is, hence the re-rate. My 9 came right after my first viewing, hence the hype. Even it out with a solid 8. Reading the AV Club review, the writer makes the point that this feels like an episode that invites speculation to a particular degree, what with several characters potentially marching to their death, foul play occurring in Winterfell and emphasis on the drastic pivot taken in the war between Cersei and Daenerys. Interested to see where fully unspoiled folk see the season going. And makes me wish I didn't know about a certain major setpiece happening at a certain Dragonpit in the finale. Boo.

After Hardhome I had no idea it would go over so well because I didn't know how to take it in. It took two rewatches for me to realize its quality. Anyhow, I'm not so wedded to this ep. that I'll fuss any further. But I'm still correct.

I'm actually quite happy with this episode. Do I wish D&D had written it instead? Yeah, because it was a very ambitious episode with a lot of heavy lifting and I think this material would have been better in the hands of more gifted writers. Especially the scene at Dragonstone - the one when they discuss the wight hunt - needed a bit more weight. They should have made it clearer as to why they need Cersei's help. They almost made it sound like they need the Lannister's help so that Cersei is distracted. It would have been better to emphasise the fact that they simply need more men if they wanna have a chance against the dead. This is implied of course, but I would have preferred a longer and more elaborate scene, because it's supposed to be a game changer and it didn't work as well as I wanted it to. The other scene that should have been longer was the Tyrion/Jaime one. But unlike Nezzer , I have no issue with Tyrion thinking that he survived. He saw Bronn saving him and if Jaime had died, the entire Kingdom would have known soon after. Tyrion knows this. However, I think the other scenes were all pretty strong, everything with Cersei in particular. What ultimately makes this episode a success for me is the fact that Hill managed to write in all the different connections between characters without getting bogged down in details. I mean: Gendry/Davos, Gendry/Jon, Jon/Sandor, Jorah/Jon, Gendry/BWB etc. Plus all the reunions like Jorah/Dany and Jorah/Tyrion. I was very impressed with that and he should get some credit for pulling this off. It's an 8 for me. By the way, if the next two episodes are (high) 10s, then this season might finally replace S1 as my favourite season.

Said it so I didn't have to! Agree with everything you've said there.
And yeah if these last two get near the standard of the last two of season 6, it will definitely be my favourite.

8. Worst of the season so far. This really missed some things IMO. The reunion between the Lannister brothers was great, but way too short. Winterfell scenes also felt lacking.

Great moment is Varys and Tyrion's scene, where Tyrion knows that Varys read Jon's letter.

9/10, probably the closest thing we will get to a filler ep, setting up the end of the season. Loved the reunion with Jaime and Tyrion, as well as Gendry meeting Jon, plus Jorah as well. This episode covered so much! Also, Gilly learning Jon is legitimate only to be shut down by Sam

Looking at some of the really low ratings. If I was watching a show and I thought more than half of one of its episodes was bad I'd stop watching it there and then. I wouldn't waste time waiting for it to get better, I'd just stop wasting my time on something I thought could ever be that bad. I just don't get rating an episode of this show like that given the production values and storytelling. I mean, I'm reluctant to even give my least favourite episode of GoT, 202, a six. That even feels too low for that episode, one that I have a million problems with. Anyhow. People will do as they will. I just don't get it.
Anyways, back to the rye. I'm really surprised by some of the super low ratings as well. I waited until the next day to even venture in here to read and to get my thoughts sorted out first. This episode was up and down for me, but overall it had more ups than downs. An episode would have to be super bad ... I mean, all the scenes like the sand snakes level bad for me to go below a 5 or 6 which I consider the halfway mark. Nothing in Season 6 or 7 so far has been that level of bad. People are pretty harsh on some things without weighing the episode overall. Just a bit of advice to those conflicted on an episode: If it's that bad, make a list of what you liked or didn't like (as some do here faithfully every week) and then weigh the bad against the good before you make your final rating. It's really not fair to say the episode was terrible due to one or two scenes or lines you didn't like. I'll be the first to admit there were a few questionable moments in this episode and some of them fairly big enough to make me somewhat annoyed because Arya is a favorite character of mine and I do not like this direction they've taken her with the shitty attitude even though I do know why they're doing it. I'm still giving it a high 8 overall despite that and not understanding some of the Winterfell stuff (like Glover trying to turn on Jon Snow already). I also didn't care for the Archmaesters and Sam scene but it wasn't horrible. I just think the rest of the episode was strong and I'm not going to bash it to death for a few missteps in the writing this week.

I think that the biggest problem with this episode was that the meeting at Dragonstone focused on Cersei only. If they said they need wight to convince every lord in the South it would make much more sense why would they risk so much for it. I mean, it seems that that was the intention from D&D, judging by their comments in In the episode, but it didn't feel that way. This is very frustrating for me because I spent months arguing how the white hunt does make sense and they didn't really did much to sell that. Now book purists are whining again. This needed to be a 6-7 minutes long scene to explain everything. It's something perfectly logical, it's the solution to a problem Jon was facing all this season, but that scene was just too rushed. I will give them 8 again.

Here's the thing though, I hold Game of Thrones to a very high standard, when they don't deliver that standard, I have no problem giving an episode a lower rating. I don't judge the show differently from any other show I rate because it's my favorite. I don't think I've ever given an episode a 1. I know I rated Lord Snow and No One a 2 or a 3, I can't remember, but those episodes were terrible and deserved it. I also don't give a way 10's very easily. I think I've given 12 episodes a 10. S5 was the only season that didn't have a 10 from me.
I like seeing the variety personally. When an episode is great, I like that we all kind of unite with higher ratings but for episodes like this, it's nice to see ratings across the board.
