I'm going to refram from scoring until I'm able to watch the episode calmly and in HD quality. When I watched it last week, I was stressing out because I hadn't finished packing for my trip and the quality wasn't that great. However, I have to say I've watched "the scene" (you know what I'm talking about) a few times and it gets better upon rewatch, each time.

9. Already watching a second time. It would be a 10 except for the stupid Arya stuff and no Bran. Really that does no ring true at all to me. Sansa explained the letter and Arya to dumb to get it. NO. Also Arya is not a total bitch and Sansa would not get rid of Brienne for such a reason. Surely Jon can send ravens to Winterfell as well as Dragonstone.
Otherwise a high impact episode, especially the end. So the Night King has a way to get past the Wall now. Loved the way Tormund told Jon to bend the knee. He is practical rather than a proud man. The CGI was spectacular and fight scenes really good too.

10. Best of the season yet. I knew what was coming and I still feel like I got punched in the gut. I'm trying to think of the last time we went from such a high to such a low that fast.

Disliked My precious timeframe. They killed Uncle Ben!
Liked Everything else.
I can't help but love this episode. I tried very hard to complain, but it's really good. A vast improvement on the last episode. It was better written, had a lot of nice little details like characters reactions (the Hound and fire), interactions (Jorah and Longclaw, Jorah and Thoros) and felt a lot tighter than last week's. There was no far that felt like it needed trimming this episode. Everything was the for a reason, and I like it when that happens. The special effects for this episode were beautiful as well. Just a great episode.

It's a 10. No doubt about that. Despite my initial dislike for the Arya/Sansa scenes, I have since come around (having already watched it before tonight) and had a lot of time to think about it. I think anyone feeling similarly should pause and re-watch and really think about the dynamic going on here between the two sisters before making a judgment on it. It's complicated and very dark, but once you start picking apart the two vastly different perspectives it becomes clear what's going on. Arya is testing Sansa's integrity. Yes she's scaring her and threatening her, but Sansa is not the same easily manipulated little girl that wrote that letter in King's Landing so long ago and Arya sees it in the way she lifts her chin and faces Arya bravely. Sansa passed the game of faces. Arya knows her to be good and not under Littlefinger's complete control. It's hard to explain how the scene goes about making that apparent but it does in the bigger picture. Flipping the dagger around and handing it to Sansa is Arya's way of saying ... "Figure out what you're going to do with this..." and of course the dagger is everything - it's the catalyst for so much more to come. I could write pages and pages about the Wight Hunt and the battle on that tiny island in a frozen lake but suffice to say here for the purposes of the rating, it's uncomparable. You cannot compare it to the loot train battle as the dynamics and emotions are entirely different. It's haunting, terrifying, tragic and yet beautiful all at once. Seeing Viserion go down in a burst of flame from his neck, blood trailing into the water with him, was a LOT more emotional than I expected it to be. It tore me up and it's going to break the world's hearts all over again. They survived... even Jon. But a price was paid for this quest. And the worst is yet to come knowing Viserion now serves the Night King.

8. LIKES *As ridiculous as the wight hunt is, that entire sequence was really well done and I loved all the character development we got. *Viserion's death was even more brutal on my big TV. *Tyrion and Dany's scene. *Acting was on point all around. *UnViserion. Oh God.
DISLIKES *Winterfell. I tried to take into account everyone else's interpretations of it. How Arya was just testing Sansa and what not, but I still can't help but be really annoyed with how they are characterizing Arya, and how silly they made Sansa look after LF tells her Brienne can protect them, then she sends her away. I felt like the writing almost went an extra step to make them dumb. I think they could've had these same disagreements, just played better. I never liked lettergate, even when I read about it in the leaks. *I wish I shipped Jonerys because then their scenes together wouldn't be so cringey to me. Like Jon somehow knowing her nick name is "Dany" and I felt like they made Viscerion's death all about her feelings for Jon. It's like she didn't get to mourn her son. I think better editing could've still given Jonerys shippers what they wanted, and also have her mourn her child more clearly *And finally, formula. This episode had so many tropes. Carefully placed red shirts, a chance for the main hero to look around at all the chaos while everyone fights around him and he doesn't get touched. Hero charging at the villain etc. They were good scenes but it just wasn't very original and that stops me from giving it a 9 or 10, even though I enjoyed the episode.

A triumphant return for Alan Taylor. He was too good for them-there blockbusters. Glad to have him back in the world of TV. Oh yeah. And a ten, of course.

9.
My gripes are only very minor. I didn't really like the dialogue between Arya and Sansa before the letter came up. Something felt really off with Maisie's delivery which dragged me out of the moment quite a bit, considering it was also a relatively lengthy speech. It's a shame because Maisie is usually really reliable. The rest of the WF stuff I thought was fine.
Also, Dany's snowman dress was offensive to my eyes.

9. Don't understand some of the writing choices in Winterfell. Sansa is afraid of Arya but knows Brienne will protect her, and then immediately sends Brienne away. Huh? The wight battle was amazing. Seriously stunning stuff. A little bit cliche as day dreamer said, but that didn't diminish my enjoyment in the slightest.

10. Best of the season yet. I knew what was coming and I still feel like I got punched in the gut. I'm trying to think of the last time we went from such a high to such a low that fast. I don't think there is one, and boat scene pretty much encompasses game of thrones, it's bittersweet, it's sad and moving and beautiful all at once. The juxtaposition of Jon and Viserion was brilliant. Both go in the water. One had died and was grout back with fire, the other ice. You see them both open their eyes. The boat is warmly lit with warm earth tones and the north is cold and hard. Viserion is enslaved you see these chains Jon is free to make choices. Both are dragons. its a very different and deep episode. There is tragedy and love and life vs. death. Love the battle at the rock. When everything slows down, and it's so symbolic of the struggle to live. Death always wins, but you still gotta fight.

9. Don't understand some of the writing choices in Winterfell. Sansa is afraid of Arya but knows Brienne will protect her, and then immediately sends Brienne away. Huh? LF was playing some reverse psychology to get her to send Bri away. By saying she'll stand by both of you, he meant she might not side with Arya over you.
