It's a 9 from me. There are a ton of moments I loved, like the first 20 minutes of character interactions, and the amazing set pieces and action sequences, but there's just something stopping me from giving this a 10, and I don't know what it is. It was almost...underwhelming in a way? I dunno, I never really cared about the other two dragons, and I'm not even sure which one was actually killed, so that didn't really impact me emotionally You're not worthy of such a moniker. If I didn't read the leaks, I might not know which one had died either, it was kind of hard to tell.

I think this episode compared with the other "block buster" episodes stands out because it was quieter. There was no less action but there was a lot more human conflict with the heart going on, which is a core part of the series.

Though after looking it up I have apparently had them mixed up for years. I thought Viserion was the green one and Rhaegal the red. Whoops!

I'd give it a 8. Every episode has epic moments. I just kind of wished things slowed down a tad (maybe 10 episodes would have felt fuller).

9 (though more like a rounded up 8.5)
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Thoros and Beric simultaneously lighting up their swords to fight the bear just like an RPG... Azor H. Ahai that was epic as fuck, despite being so short +++++++++++ #EPIC BOATHANDSEX +++++ All the character interactions between Jon's Magnificent Seven +++ Tyrion and Dany finally discussing her mortality and the matter of her succession ++ I actually love seeing Arya being a psycho, it has always been one of my biggest dreams for this series to see a Stark breaking bad, they've always been to pure and good for my liking + Wight Viserion was cool as fuck
- Sansa's scene with LF about Brienne and later her departure, I thought I missed something there but I've already rewatched several times and still don't get it --- The bear fight in general, what was everyone doing while Thoros was getting mauled for five minutes? ------- Benjen Ex Machina, way too convenient and his send off was shite, they just wrote him off like nothing ------------- The letter. even though I love seeing Arya being a psycho, that drama with the letter is pretty dumb IMHO --------------------------------------- Travel times, again. Sorry, D&D didn't even try this time. No way they spent more than 24h sitting on that rock -------------------------------------------------- Everything was too convenient, with last minute saves, the thing with the wights dying when a WW gets killed except for that one walker they needed to capture and other stuff like the NK choosing to kill a random flying dragon instead of the one standing still right in front of him with a dozen important characters on its back
Pretty hard to judge this episode. The writing was quite poor at times, but it was too entertaining to judge it too harshly.

Everything was too convenient. Could not agree more with that.

+++++++++++ #EPIC BOATHANDSEX Nezzer gets my favorite post of the night award for this hilarious hashtag and because he's the most adorable new Jonerys shipper to join our little love boat. The ship that was promised.

9 or 10. I need a rewatch. + The awesome voices of Richard Dormer and Iain Glen + Beric and Thoros with their flaming swords and general badassery + Jon offering Jorah Longclaw + The visuals were fucking amazing + Soundtrack was chilling + Good dialogue + The scene between Dany and Jon on the boat almost makes me ship Jonerys + Reveal about the White Walkers - Like Nezzer said, everything was way too convenient. - They did nothing really to show the passage of time. It seemed like they spent one night Beyond the Wall. - Benjen got perhaps the shittiest send-off in the show - The dragons looked way too similar, I thought Drogon was Rhaegal for a while and if not for the leaks, I would've had no idea which dragon died - Why did every meaningful conversation happen out in the wild while they had just spent a week in a boat? - Winterfell plot is the worst this year

Everything beyond the wall was incredible, but Winterfell was a mess and it dragged the episode down quite a bit for me.
Also, and I'm afraid I'm gonna be lynched for this, even though I liked the scene between Dany and Jon, when he called her Dany, I cringed a little bit. It didn't feel right.

9 for me. Loved most things about it (the character interactions, the boat scene, the fighting), was absolutely horrified at Tormund being dragged into the water, and of course poor Viserion baby WF was just okay. On a rewatch I skipped those scenes, which says everything I guess. There were a couple of instances which I found a little underwhelming. One was when Dany showed up with the dragons. Don't know why, but I didn't get the thrill I got when the same thing happened in the loot train episode. This is probably just me, since from what I've seen, everyone else liked it. Second was that I was so convinced that Rhaegal would swoop down and pick Jon up, SO CONVINCED, that when Benjen showed up, I was disappointed. I'mma rewatch it now (third time) and see how I feel again, but I think I prefer the loot train episode, at least in terms of the battle/action. I watched that episode 4 or 5 times and had goosebumps every single time when Drogon emerged from the clouds.

Total 10. Easily one of my favorite episodes ever. The poetic irony of our heroes trying to fight something that can't be stopped (death) and making things worse in the process is a beauty. This episode has a really strong core concept and the execution is extraordinary. Alan Taylor brought out the best in Sophie Turner, Kit Harington, Emilia Clarke, Richard Dormer, Peter Dinklage, and the whole gang this season.

This reminds me a lot about how I felt at the end of Watchers on the Wall. They step up their game every year - and now even between major setpieces within that year - on a technical level. There were many wonderful moments and thrilling sequences. But, I don't know, something about it didn't totally work for me.
I think it's definitely a problem that I didn't really feel any stakes, at least not to anyone I really care enough about. Also found it strange how the first 10 minutes were basically just flitting from conversation between wight hunters without any structure. The show is usually good at balancing character moments with the action, but here it tried to fit all the character stuff in before the action stepped up.
Viserion going down was horrifying. Man oh man. Benjen's death, however, was a waste. If Jon does end up riding Rhaegal eventually, I'm going to call that a missed opportunity. Was really expecting that to happen.
I'm being too harsh, it was still great. The last 20 minutes or so were absolutely thrilling. Jonerys has built up so nicely. But I'm not sure it's in the realms of the best episode 9 equivalents.
9.
