Let's see what the "experts" have to say about today's episode.

I haven't read nearly as many reviews so far as I typically do, mostly because after I started seeing the same inane comments cropping up, I decided to treat myself to a break. But of the reviews that I have read, Alyssa Rosenberg's is by far the best. She has a real talent for identifying the core themes of each episode, and the one that she keyed in on for "Beyond the Wall" wasn't one that I had considered, but which makes total sense.

Honestly, reading most of the reviews this week just made me think tv reviewers are a bunch of whingers. And every time someone comments on incest, I just think "dude, they're magic!". Normal rules of genetics don't apply.

Honestly, reading most of the reviews this week just made me think tv reviewers are a bunch of whingers. And every time someone comments on incest, I just think "dude, they're magic!". Normal rules of genetics don't apply. A lot of them do have a whinging streak - partly because they all have to watch a metric ton of TV, most of which isn't very good. So they're generally overworked, quick to use snarkiness as a coping mechanism, and primed to key in on certain tropes that every show uses, but most of which don't employ nearly as well as Game of Thrones does. With a few exceptions, they also aren't as likely to be invested in the story itself, so certain emotional payoffs that play to fans slide off them. Alan Sepinwall for instance, who's usually quite good, has never really cared for Jon Snow and loves to call out the Starks as being "stupid". That's his right, but it means that any episode where Jon and the Starks are the centerpiece has a higher bar to clear. He was a lone dissenting voice on "The Watchers on the Wall" and "Battle of the Bastards", for instance, although he did love "Hardhome". His review of this week's episode strayed into a pissy tone at times - although apparently he wrote it while he was on his vacation. That makes sense. There are also several outlets which are clearly just covering GOT because it draws traffic like no other show out there, only they don't have a recapper on staff who's up to the task. You can usually ID those pretty quick, and avoid them after. There are some good ones out there, though. In addition to Alyssa Rosenberg at the Washington Post, I really enjoyed David Crow's review on Den of Geek (he gave the episode 5/5 stars). And while Sean T. Collins at Rolling Stone was more mixed on this episode, he was at least fair-minded, and he's been extremely positive on the rest of the season (I think he's the one who helped create the Boiled Leather reading order as well, so he's a fan).

Having said that, I quite enjoyed this review from Vulture. It's a great idea to compare the episode to Baelor, given Alan Taylor's direction of both. I also liked the Den of Geek review you mentioned.

Ozzy has some great things to say about the theme of the episode being seeking "Truth" for each of the characters on the quest. Interesting take on it with his usual brash humor. I particularly liked his bit about how Arya and Sansa still have a 'wall' between them as tall as THE wall and how both are trying to show the other one how much they've changed. Sansa is trying to make Arya see she's a competent leader and true to her House while Arya is trying to flush out the snake in their midst (LF) by putting Sansa "to the point" ... literally.
