I would hope Game of Thrones would strive to be different than Lord of the Rings, and not just have the same "kill the bad guy and it's all over" ending, especially because since S1 it's been all about subverting our expectations.

But what other resolution to the NK and his army can there be? We know fire can take them out. We know if you kill a Walker, whoever he turned dies also. We have the NK on a dragon, directing from overhead. As the NK comes forward, no matter how many the dragons burn, any usable body will be recruited to the NK. What else could be done to stop him, wait until they get to King's Landing and then Blackwater their ass? That would leave half the country a graveyard. We only have at best 4 episodes to take them out, maybe 5

I don't suspect there are that many, so it would be totally possible. But then, I always got the impression that the NK turned the vast majority of wights himself so ultimately it would all come down to the NK again.

I'm completely fine with this solution as long as killing the NK is portrayed to be a very difficult thing to do with lots of casualties. Which I'm sure it will be.

I like that. The Night King gets separated from Viserion. Final battle on two fronts. Jon vs Night King and Dany/Drogon vs Viserion.

I'm sure it will cost the defenders huge, but the NK loses more. I could see an entire BotB length fight just between the NK himself and our heroes. Sort of a "Battle before the Black Gates" moment. "Impossible odds, certainty of death..what are we waiting for?"

I'm not saying it won't happen. It obviously will. Doesn't make it feel any less cheap

I do think they're going to have to figure out a way to separate The Night King from Viserion, because otherwise he's fairly invincible as he can just fly away from whatever battle is being lost. The same could be said of Daenerys on Drogon, but both of them are still mortal so they're at more of a disadvantage and the Night King seems to have superhuman powers that transferred to Viserion who was faster and now has magical flame. He definitely flies faster, they were specific about showing that in the final scene. Unless they can either knock The Night King off Viserion or Viserion is taken out (The Scorpion ballista armed with dragonglass or valyrian steel arrow was suggested) I don't see how they're going to take him out by himself.

Remember Bronn had some modifications after firing at Drogon, so I could totally see this happening. Viserion comes down, and from the wreckage the NK arises on land, and Jon is there with Longclaw waiting.

It's still cheap in the sense that it's an incredibly lazy and overused fantasy trope, kill the big bad guy and all his minions die with him. Can't say I love the idea.

I think it's necessary. There are hundreds and hundreds of thousands of wights, it is physically impossible for them to them all individually.

ikr? I'm not sure what people were expecting? Something original about the ending maybe? But what? As TheMadQueen said, there is over a hundred thousand zombies. They can't kill them all individually. Is there any way to end the war without some variation of "if you kill the leader, all the minions will fall" trope?
