So, its very suspicious to me (in a good way, of course) that Arthur Dayne's sword, Dawn, is featured so very prominently in 6x10's Lyanna death scene.
We all know the Azor Ahai prophecy. Rhaegar was convinced that the 'red star' was the comet (and so was I when I saw the red comet in Season 1!) but we also know that GRRM likes to subvert prophecies in tricky ways. Prophecies almost never mean what they seem to mean at first glance. We also know that Miguel Sapochnik is a superb director, 6x10 was excellently directed, not a frame wasted, so why this prominent and seemingly unnecessary shot?
I don't know where the 'salt and smoke' come in at Jon's birth and Lyanna's death, but I'm convinced that the sword Dawn is the bleeding red star. Dawn was 'forged from the heart of a fallen star,' after all. So, Dawn is Lightbringer (makes sense), Jon is Azor Ahai, but where is Dawn now? In the books, Ned travels from the ToJ to Starfall to return Dawn to Ashara Dayne, but then IIRC, we never hear of it again. In the show, they're obviously focusing in on the famed Valyrian swords--Jon being given Longclaw, Sam stealing Heartsbane, Oathkeeper and Widow's Wail being forged from Ice, and back when the WW attacked Bloodraven's cave, Meera grabbed a sword on her way out. Presumably she still has it, though we haven't seen any focus on it...yet. Dark Sister?
My focus in thisrambling post is not what happens in the books, but rather, why is the show focusing on these swords and most particularly now in 6x10, on Dawn? Yes, we know that Valyrian steel kills WW, but so does dragonglass, and we know that Dragonstone has mountains of dragonglass (the show even had Stannis mention that), most probably enough to arm everybody in the North with dragonglass arrowheads. We also know that half a dozen famous swords aren't going to mean diddly-crap against the vast hordes of WW and undead that will come pouring down through the Wall. So, there's something else about these half-dozen or so swords, some mystery about them that we don't yet know--but the showrunners know it, and that's my point. What is the mystery involving these few named Valyrian swords and most particularly now, Dawn, beyond just their ability to kill WW?
I feel like when we get this reveal, probably toward the end of next season, we'll all be like 'AHA, so that's what it was all about!'
When the red star bleeds and the darkness gathers, Azor Ahai shall be reborn amidst salt and smoke...
