It's weird - Twitter seems to absolutely love this episode, while Reddit seems to hate it (although the GoT reddit is more positive based on the posts upvoted, as most of the negativity seems to be in the comments). They weren't kidding when they said this season will be divisive. I can only imagine the ending being even more controversial. Yep. I bet it gets even more controversial from now on.

I rewatched the episode and while I still really enjoyed it. On a second watch I understand more why people had a problem with the episode and overall flaws.
I’m bringing my rating down to an 8.

Also as much as I love Cersei I completely and totally understand why people are pissed that the NK and AOTD storyline was ended midway.
But I think what we really have to ask ourselves is....would we want to see a repeat of this same exact battle in KL? Cuz idk about that lol. There were definitely a lot of aspects of this that could have been done better (I agree that team winterfell’s battle strategy was appalling). But I’m not sure if an episode 4 of the survivors running away from the NK and an episode 5 of the NK coming to KL would have made great TV either.
what new story elements, intrigue and twists could the writers have added with the NK in KL to differ it and make it refreshing and not just a copy/paste of the battle of Winterfell in a different location? Idk

There's really no way it can't be. Particularly since GrrM's said it won't be all-too different from his own ending, insofar as that's anything more than a pipe-dream. I think people are so wedded to theories and characters and their wants for the narrative that there's no one ending that wouldn't ruffle feathers. It's too easy or too messy. Too ambiguous or too clean. When fandom's develop and go haywire there'll always be a vocal portion who adamantly hates any show's ending. The only way to avoid this eventuality is to never end one's show and to continue treading water until the show's stock wanes and losses are cut. Which HBO undoubtedly would have preferred for economic reasons. Thankfully though they respect their showrunners enough to defer to their instincts on this. Incidentally I'm still at a hard ten and I can't fathom it dropping from that ranking. I don't know exactly how it upsets my previous top five list but it's certainly high enough up there that I'll have to rewatch the show as a whole to be able to properly rank my favourites in the future. As for the response from certain quarters of the fandom and of the tv reviewer class...they only strengthen my belief in the episode's quality.

When fandom's develop and go haywire there'll always be a vocal portion who adamantly hates any show's ending. This is compounded by the fact that the timespan between the books, the show series, and the ending stretches out over 23 years so far! In that time, fans have become deeply entrenched in their beliefs, theories and strong opinions about how it should end, who should be the hero of the story and how the entire mess of details is supposed to mesh together into some sort of coherent ending that makes sense and is satisfying. That's never going to happen at this point. The show writers knew this going into this final season and you could tell they were hesitant and apprehensive about how it would be received in multiple interviews. It's further complicated by the fact GRRM isn't getting the books done either and the division of fans who believe only in the books vs. those of us happy to jump on the show bandwagon is even wider than ever.

I think the controversy is inevitable. Not everyone is gonna love the ending choices.
I mean I loved the conclusion to the long night, some of you guys hated it. It’s okay, that’s just how it goes.

And then they fuck up Cersei's ending and you go wild. Just kidding, I'm actually here for the controversy. I cannot imagine anything worse than a boring, conventional ending to this story.

Watched for the second time last night, this time sitting on the floor right in front of the tv, Second thoughts: * I remembered Beric's first appearance back in S1 was a commission from Ned to find and stop The Mountain's butchering. Beric's ending was to serve as a catalyst, jolting Sandor into action to save Ned's daughter . . . and, hopefully in 8.5, we'll see Sandor ultimately fulfilling Ned's commission by defeating Gregor. * I hadn't noticed in first watch that Melisandre gave Arya a little smile as she prompted, "And Blue Eyes". Don't think we've ever seen Melisandre smile before, have we? * Had a new appreciation of the way the impact of the NK's demise was shown, particularly the distant shot of the outside walls with the wights falling, avalanche fashion I realized just how many details it's impossible to register upon first watch - I think I may need those 8 watches that motherofmountains has done.

Beric's ending was to serve as a catalyst, jolting Sandor into action to save Ned's daughter . . . and, hopefully in 8.5, we'll see Sandor ultimately fulfilling Ned's commission by defeating Gregor. Great point about how Sandor needs to complete Beric's original mission assigned from Ned Stark! I realized after I analyzed the whole thing awhile that they wanted Beric and Sandor to save Arya because Sandor had always been giving Beric shit about how he "wasn't anything special" so whey did the Lord or Light keep bringing him back? Well, now we know. We could also translate this to Sandor himself. He should have died after the fight with Brienne left him near death. But again, another 'godly man' found him and brought him back from the brink. If Sandor thinks about this connection, he may realize he too served an important purpose in defeating The Night King by saving Arya - not just at the end there in Winterfell, but also back on their journey across the countryside when he fought for her several times, not just the duel with Brienne. He really did protect her. I'm really glad it was Beric and Sandor who played that important scene with Arya and Melisandre.
