All the build up to Daenerys' death was great. Almost all the of the character endings were great. They just reeeeally struggled to pivot between those moments tonally. The Dragonpit scene just needed something before it to make that swing work.
Once I'd kind of shaken off the tonal shift I could get on board with it, but I think this episode more than any shows their difficulty in guiding this absurdly huge story towards conclusion. It was basically impossible and I think they've done pretty well.
The best scene was Brienne and the White Book. That was perfection.

I gave it a 9, which might possibly go up in later viewings, but not down. Dany's end was heartbreaking but I think her storyline suffered a lot in the final season and it was the only jarring note for me. I agree that's where it was all meant to go, I didn't expect a different ending for her, just that it all felt a bit too rushed in the last few episodes. That's more of a criticism carried over from last ep, I realise that.
But everything else I loved. The new small council, Ser Brienne's closure, Jon reuniting with Ghost, King Bran the Broken, Tyrion and Jon's guilt, Queen Sansa!!!, Arya the intrepid explorer. Gendry sitting on the council of Lords, bless him. I bawled at the final scene with the Starks going their different ways, all finally content. I loved how the closing scene was people riding into the woods beyond the Wall, like the very first scene of the first episode. In short, I think the end was very well done.

Currently sitting at 5.2 on IMDb Might take Dexter’s place as the most hated finale of all time.

Currently sitting at 5.2 on IMDb Might take Dexter’s place as the most hated finale of all time. Yeah the negativity is incredibly high. I wonder what ending would have put it closer to a 10, but probably none since it was always going to be divisive no matter how it ended.

I loved the first half of the episode, but then it all came crashing down. I would still say 7/10.

It's hard for me to rate this as a solo episode so I'm still holding my vote. But it will be high, obviously. It was a beautiful finale and left me wanting more of the show so they did a good job.

It gets a 5 from me.
Great visuals and music. The imagery and music when Dany entered the throne was awesome. That was the most beautiful Dany has ever looked in the entire show. Valyrians are supposed to be ungodly beautiful and Emilia Clarke was at the top of her game in that respect. And although I didn't care for the writing Clarke did display show some of her best acting abilities this season. I know this this wouldn't make sense(but making sense went out the window long ago) but I wished Drogon did try to kill Jon with fire, only to find out that the dragon fire doesn't hurt Jon. So Drogon gets so frustrated he melts the Iron Throne just to deny Jon any chance of sitting on it before taking Dany and flying off.
After the Dany death that I didn't care for the rest of the episode. That scene with the new high council reminded me of the Seinfeld final scene where the camera pans out during a conversation.
Why would Jon have to go to the wall if Greyworm and the rest of his troops are leaving? Who would be left to demand Jon go to the Wall? Really don't think the Iron Born would care that much. Maybe the Dothraki. I can see them gong ape shit and just tearing Westeros apart after Dany's murder. They never addressed that issue on the show. Dorne would probably be a good place for them to live if they stayed in Westeros.
The one story line after Dany's death I liked was Greyworm going to Naath to protect Missandei's people from slavers. That was a nice touch and a fitting end for the Unsullied. Because offering them a house was ridiculous. They don't have balls. They can't start a house.
Overall way too happy of an ending for GOT in my opinion. Sansa is queen. Arya is out on new adventures. Jon gets to go be a wildling. Tyrion is hand again. I'm just not feeling Bran being king. He is emotionless and catatonic at times. Who would want him to be king? I guess Bran knew this would happen the whole time. So he is the winner of Game of Thrones? I guess.
God I hope GRRM finishes his books now. At least we have that to hold on to.
I'm moving to Westworld now. That season 3 clip looks intriguing.

Currently sitting at 5.2 on IMDb Might take Dexter’s place as the most hated finale of all time.
Not saying some people out there aren't legitimately upset, but I no longer consider the IMDB scores as a useful reference of how the episodes are actually being received. Not this year. I used to take them into consideration, but after these past few weeks, I’ve discarded them as worthless. If you look past the numbers and actually read the 1-star reviews people are leaving (which I do NOT recommend), they read like the work of bots. There were thousands of them up within minutes of the finale being over (how convenient and not at all suspicious) and they're all tedious variations on the same thing. Same thing for every episode in this final season since "The Long Night" (and they've started to go back and downvote the first two episodes as well). Whether or not this is a coordinated bombing campaign similar to what happened to The Last Jedi or Captain Marvel, I don't know. But it all reeks of B.S to me.
To be fair, it's obviously it's not all B.S. When there's this much smoke, there's definitely a fire somewhere, and again, people can feel however they want to feel. But even so, I personally think placing this finale within 10,000 miles of Dexter is both ludicrous and unfair. It's divisive, obviously, but divisive does not equate to universally panned. I've already seen more genuinely positive reactions to this finale in the past 12 hours than I have to the ending of that show in years. And I suspect time will far more kind.
I'm as guilty as anyone of wanting to race online and talk about the episode immediately after it ends. I'm here in the "Rate the Episode thread", aren't I? But big picture-wise, I'm going to be infinitely more interested in what the reception of the finale and final season as a whole is like in a few years’ time than I am right now. Love it or hate it, everyone needs time to process. The idea that recaps and reviews that people have to write and file within two hours of the episode ending are the definitive critical indicator of how popular culture is received is laughable to me. Everyone has to have A Take. And the idea that fandom reactions are being gauged by YouTube comments (which are, and always have been, a cesspool), Reddit (which is a hive of crackpot theorizing and circle-jerking mob mentality), Twitter (which lifts up the loudest, most heated, and often least rational voices), and IMDB/Rotten Tomatoes user scores (which are subject to disingenuous manipulation) is deeply unfortunate. Those places don’t represent any conversations I’ve ever had with anyone in the real world.
Not that I mean to paint with too broad a brush. I guess I'm just tired of hyperbole. Not everything is the "worst ever." Or the best, for that matter. Nuance ... it's a beautiful thing.

I can't wait to watch some reaction series on YT from S1 to S8 to see how someone who is completely unspoiled reacts to this show, without books, theories or expectations.

Now that doesn't mean that a lot of people didn't like the episode (I still have no idea how I feel about it overall myself) but IMDB is massively compromised at this point. But it's a sort of circular thing. The fan anger feeds the bots and people see the work of the bots and feel vindicated in their anger. IMDB also has people voting before the episode airs. Which is ludicrous. Of course I'm pretty sure there are also bots giving the show tens too. Which should also be stopped. It's a pretty sad state of affairs when the metric a lot of people use to measure how good a show or episode is is the result of whose bots were the more effective.

With this episode, I had a weird reaction. Usually I want to go here asap, see how people react, but not today. I was not interested in other people's opinions. Not because I don't like the discourse or don't value other people's opinion but simply because I knew this episode worked for me.
I see a lot of people saying they prefered one half or the other. The first half was definitely a new kind of atmosphere for GoT, but the second half felt like classic thrones to me.
