Seems WAY too soon. But then they've rebooted Spiderman twice now in the past ten years, so I guess the norms around this kind of thing have changed significantly.

I guess that LOTR Amazon series is offically happening, but the press release says it will explore stories set before Fellowship. So maybe referring to it as Lord of the Rings is an easy way for people who don't know any better to be excited about it, but this might actually be a Silmarillion related situation?????????????????????????

Honestly I hold such a torch for Christopher Tolkien for protecting the Silmarillion and hope he isn’t bought out or caves to the pressure of other family members (because that is, to be very precise, a FUCKTON of money)

Sounds like Amazon’s LotR show will focus on young Aragorn. Considering it will explore Aragon's childhood, I imagine the focus will be centered on Rivendell and we'll see Arwen, Elrond, Gandalf, and Galadriel. Aragorn was around 8 at the time of The Hobbit, so I dunno if some of the events will parallel there too.

There are much more interesting things that could be focused on in the life of Young Aragorn than his stay in Rivendell - in particular his time as Thorongil in Gondor and his explorations of Umbar and the lands beyond where the stars are strange. Rivendell seems more like a quick episode early on with periodic returns later in the series rather than the focus. five seasons seems way too long for young Aragorn though so I hope this is more of an anthology show where each season has a new focus

Aragorn was around 8 at the time of The Hobbit, so I dunno if some of the events will parallel there too. I think it will be great, will finally get to Meet Young Aragorn MeeMaw, and find out what he was like before Leonard, Raj and Walowitz. Oh wait. Should be interesting to see that Gamdalf and elves do age. Unless they plan to recast everyone, which should probably be a must. I don't know anything about the show but I would guess it's Aragorn as a teen. You got love angst, non elf angst, angst over his family, angst to prove himself. I don't think they will leave him in Rivendell, maybe. Like he could come and go from their after the initial setup. Don't want to small of a cast or hi running around alone either. Galaddriel shouldn't be there and neither should Gandalf. Ellendan and Elrohir would probably be his traveling buddies. It could also take place when he is 20, at least start there. Before he was 20 Aragorn thought his name was Estel, Elrond kept his identity secret even from him. Arwen also did not show up till after he knew who he was she was living with Galadriel and when she returned that's when them met and got all hugs and kisses. He met Gandalf like 5 years after that. Not long after he met Arewn he left Rivendell to live with his people. Five years later he met Gandalf and the Grey Company began guarding the Shire then. Gandalf the grey, hence the Grey Company. Thing about Aragorn and the Lord of the rings is that time is much more normal there than in Martin's world. Aragorn isn't like Jon, he spends 18 years in Rivendell 5 years with the Dunedain, he spent a year around the shire and the next 23 years serving Rohan and Gondor, and once again had a different name Thorongil the Eagle of the star. Aragorn was in his 80's when the fellowship was forged. if you don't want to lock him down to just Rivendell, my guess would be episode 1-2 set up episode 3 surprise your name is Aragorn here is a ring and a broken sword. This is my Daughter, and just hit the angst button cause you are going to be the death of her. Young love if we do this one of us dies angst. Well the both die but one of them dies because of it, apperantly dating mortals is a death sentence, tough gods, wonder what the punishment is for dating a dwarve. Anyway start right around his birthday, that gives you five seasons till he meets Gamdalf and patrols the shire. He can have all kinds of adventures. And you probably get the sons of Elrond with him and who knows what else. Just as long as it's not something like the Shannara chronicles, just all kinds of bad. oh tried watching Rain on Netflix, it sucks, I hate dubbing, but even more I hate an idiot plot, but lucky for the idiot plot because it's of the hook. Cause what I really can't stand is another post apocalyptic let's walk around and bore the shit out of everyone as we constantly show the world how stupid we are before the rain kills us. Beware, zombies? No. Vampires? no. Bikers and gangs? No. But watch out when it rains... Sometimes, cause the rain can get you... Sometimes. Dear producers of that series, go see the Day after tomorrow. Yes another weather drama. You know why nobody saw it? Cause it was stupid, kind of like that movie where the trees get you.

A tv series I'm really looking forward to (besides the GoT prequel, of course)--Amazon is putting together a series titled 'The Second Age of Middle Earth' which will take us back to the distant past and the forging of the rings of power and Sauron forging the One Ring to Rule Them All. As yet, there are no details, no specifics, but I'm keeping a watch on any new developments. I really hope they film it in New Zealand--I swear the breathtaking scenery shots throughout Peter Jackson's LOTR series were some of the best parts of that series.

They are rumors that they are using Edinburgh's new film studio in Leith. Scouts were also spotted in Scotland for potential filming locations in various areas, but yeah I hope they return to New Zealand as well.

Woo-Hoo, two bits of interesting news--Brian Cogman will work as a consultant on the series and Amazon is pouring one billion dollars into it. There's also this: The studio confirmed in March the television series will be set in the Second Age of Middle-Earth. The announcement nixed the long-standing rumor that the series would focus on the adventures of a young Aragorn (played by Viggo Mortensen in Peter Jackson’s film trilogy).
ETA: Here's a tidbit from Variety (this will be the most expensive tv series in history)
“The Lord of the Rings” – Amazon
Jeff Bezos must be a diehard fan of “Lord of the Rings” because Amazon shelled out $250 million to buy the TV rights to the seminal fantasy series by J.R.R. Tolkien, making it the most expensive show in history. Details are scarce, but the contract required a five-year commitment and for production to begin in two years, so it’s likely to debut in 2021. Like the “Game of Thrones” spinoffs, the series will use the prequel approach and take place thousands of years before the events of the books and films, during the Second Age when Sauron forged the One Ring. Expect to see some Middle Earth denizens, like hobbits, elves and dwarves, plus evil creatures lurking around Mordor, like orcs, trolls and Uruk-hai."

Two recent things:
1. When I was in NYC in March I was able to see the magnificent (!) Tolkien exhibit at the Morgan Art Museum there. It was amazing, had all of his drawings.
2. The movie Tolkien was released a short time ago. I haven't seen it but I understand it was good.

I wouldn't be surprised if we see the rise and fall of Numenor, but it depends on what part of the Second Age they focus on.

I wouldn't be surprised if we see the rise and fall of Numenor, but it depends on what part of the Second Age they focus on. I bring my confession, I visited The Board That Must Not Be Named and they have some very insightful posts from their Tolkein buffs as to what this is likely to be. I expect a pretty heavy Numenor focus in the first season at least. Depends whether they do time jumps or not as to where they finish. I'm hoping for Celebrimbor and the forging of the Elven rings. And some Galadriel stuff. I don't expect to see hobbits actually, if I remember my Tolkein lore correctly they should still be West of the Misty Mountains in the Second Age, especially the early parts that the series is likely to cover. izzue I haven't see n the Tolkein biopic either. The trailers looked pretty awful though and the Tolkein estate explicitly distanced themselves from it so read what you will into that
