Farewell Snow - And you Stark Just finished watching and oh my, I do love this show! To start with, Tyrion is sooo much better in this one! I love the breakfast scene with the Lannisters. Also love the scenes with Tyrion and Jon on the way to the wall. Jon giving Arya Needle is a lovely scene also, I think they did a good job with portraying their close relationship in just one scene. We see lots of talk about baby-Jon, Cat mentions him to Ned, Ned and Jon have a chat where Ned promises that the next time they see each other they'll talk about his mother (again ) and then Robert and Ned talk about Ned's baby mama. And then Robert goes on to tell he'll kill every Targaryen he gets his hands on. (Rhaegar gets a mention by name, also) As Ned has left we see Robb and Cat standing up in his place, taking charge. Those two have a great relationship and here we see the first glimpse of that. And then we have Kingsroad and the shit that goes down with Arya, Joffrey and Sansa. Ugh, I hate this bit.

And this gem.
"The prince will remember that, little lord."
"I hope so. If he forgets, be a good dog and remind him."
Just so.

I can now totally see why stannisforking299al put this into his Top 10. I have a hard time picking a favourite scene for this one. This was the episode I (and everyone else) fell in love with Arya, right?

Seeing Arya knock him down will never get old, nor will seeing Tyrion slap him around...

I can now totally see why stannisforking299al put this into his Top 10. I have a hard time picking a favourite scene for this one. This was the episode I (and everyone else) fell in love with Arya, right? Yes! I knew immediately they were bringing Arya to life perfectly. I thanked the Gods for Maisie Williams and great acting/directing in this episode for her! This was such an amazing episode for seeing the characters and their "true colors" coming to light after the premiere sort of blew us away with epic imagery. This was very much a heavy episode on dialogue and character development setup so it didn't appeal to everyone but it remains a favorite of mine. It's also the first we start to connect the dots on how the Starks and their tragedies were a series of misfortunate events instigated by some really malicious people (Lannisters and others alike). I absolutely loved the scene between Robert and Ned out in that field. The tension in Ned is palpable when Robert is pushing the issue of his Bastard's Mother and this is one of many instances where we realize this secret he's kept his whole life about Jon has been a heavy burden, along with the speech Catelyn gives him about leaving 17 years ago and returning with another woman's child. Ned has carried the heavy weight of this sacrifice for all of Jon's life. It's amazing, truly, how dedicated and loyal he was to his sister's wishes. The way he dismisses the Targaryens, trying to find any way to keep Robert from pushing for more revenge against them knowing what he knows about Lyanna and Rhaegar now... damn. That's so tough. No wonder Ned's face was so deeply lined and Robert teased him about being so sour faced all the time! Joffrey's shit-head status is firmly established this episode and people around the world began their Joffrey hate. I also loved the talk Tyrion had with Jon on their way to the wall. He really is terrible at consoling people as he said much later to Daenerys, haha. He puts it bluntly to Jon just what he's getting himself into and I think this sort of tough love approach is exactly what Jon needs as he's been convinced what he's doing is a noble/honorable thing when the truth of the wall and it's men is about to become reality for him. I know a lot of people hated the Dothraki scenes but I loved them. I loved Doreah teaching Dany how to be a lover (that's hot!) and then Dany successfully turning it around on Drogo. This is where they fell in love instead of her being just his property like another horse to ride. This really was Dany's first tiny step at taking some control for herself where she's never had it before in her life. It's the start of so much more! There's not as much symbolism in this episode but still plenty of foreshadowing. I'm going to condense my essay on that to one post this week, phew!

A few things I picked up on:
-When Jon's talking to Bran "You can come visit. I'll know my way around Castle Black by then." Possible foreshadowing for season 7? Maybe Jon goes to the Wall? At the very least, Bran will assume Jon is at Castle Black so maybe he'll be thinking of this conversation?
-The only two Stark family members Jon doesn't say goodbye to are Sansa and Rickon. (So far) they're the only two to have actually seen Jon again; at Winterfell no less.
If I had to guess I'd say this is the episode some people started to dislike Cat and Sansa. I certainly don't agree with the dislike but I understand why, with some people, they aren't as popular as Jon and Arya, for example. The way Cat treated Jon and how Sansa doesn't take her family's side could come off negatively to some audiences if they don't fully understand the intentions.

The way Cat treated Jon and how Sansa doesn't take her family's side could come off negatively to some audiences if they don't fully understand the intentions. I'm sure Bran expects Jon to be at the wall - so does Benjen since neither of them has been there since Jon left. Benjen left Bran and Meera right outside the wall so I imagine we'll see them at Castle Black the first episode of Season 7. But you're right, the irony of that remark so long ago - that Bran could come visit him when he "Wakes up" was not lost on me in my search for foreshadowing clues. So sad. It's not wrong to dislike either Sansa or Catelyn for their actions in the first two episodes any more than disliking Jaime or even Robert. I'll admit I just didn't like Robert at all though Mark Addy did a terrific job playing him so that's a testament to his great acting. There's varying degrees of dislike for different reasons. Some even dislike Drogo a great deal. I think we can all agree that even this early on it's easy to tell which characters are grey in nature and which ones are pretty black and white. That doesn't always stay that way, but Joffrey only gets darker where Jaime gets lighter, and so on. It's fun to see them in these beginning phases. Jaime was really an arrogant ass!

This episode showcases to me the fortunes of the Stark family. At the beginning, they are all together, a warm family unit with a strong, hands-on father, a mother who tends toward over possessiveness, handsome sons, beautiful daughters, and the father's bastard son who was raised knowing his siblings and given a name in the family.
Then the Lannisters arrive, and from the first moment their very presence tears the family apart. Arya cannot keep quiet with her inquisitive child's mind, much to Sansa's motification. Family is acknowledged and dismissed as Robert immediately corrals Ned to take him away to the crypts, leaving the two wives standing awkwardly behind, discarded in the king's haste to relive his the kidnapping and Death of Lyanna. In that moment we feel sorry for Cersei. That pity leaves in this episode when we watch her move from fear to empathy to anger as the true Queen Cersei with all her multiple personalities sashay to the front.
By the end of 1x02, our strong family has become a parody of themselves, with Ned striking the final death kneel when executing Lady, (his daughter) to the whims of the Lannisters. It doesn't matter what else Ned accomplishes on this trip, he has already traded his daughters and their happiness/freedom for peace with the crown. This is just the first of many decisions that an honorable man makes to try and do the right thing. Unfortunately, the right thing will never win the game of thrones.

This is such a great episode, like I said in the ratings thread I gave it a 9.
Winterfell has the strongest scenes. I loved Cat and Cersei talking in Bran's room. Cersei feels almost genuine. Almost.
I forgot how much I hated Jaime. It's amazing to watch this now and know he grew to be my favorite character.
Summer protecting Bran made me sad. She protected him until the very end.

I'd completely forgotten what a fantastic episode this is. The first great GOT hour for me.
As was pointed out above, the Starks are destroyed in the course of the episode. They start as a family unit, then by the end they find themselves in a mess they clearly don't know how to handle. In particular, that first recognition of senselessness as Ned sees the Hound carry the butcher's boy away is a brutal moment.
People say the show began with Ned's execution but Sean Bean played Ned as a defeated man from the very beginning. Everything begins to crumble as early as this episode.
The basic idea of the episode that everyone is on the road beginning their individual tales also makes for excellent storytelling here.
Ultimately, what makes it a great episode for me is that sense throughout that nothing lives up to its supposed worth - not the kingdom, not the Wall, not honor. The show had already begun to deconstruct them before we even got to see them. All in all, 9/10.
Oh, and last but not least, it's the episode where Catelyn and Tyrion blossomed as the great complex creatures that they are/were.

Ned and Robert are some weak-ass weenies for following through with killing Lady and not making a stand there and then. As much as people got mad at Sansa for taking a neutral stance so that shit wouldn't devolve into out-and-out conflict between Lannister and Stark, it's silly really that people get more at her here than they do Robert and Ned for y having no fucking backbone whatsoever. In Robert's case due to apathy and in Ned's due to his goofball "lawful good" ways. Anyways. It's always reassuring to know that Zunni who played Lady still lives and in the enviable company of the Lady of Winterfell.
