This ep holds up a lot better than Lord Snow. I completely forgot about Jon using Ghost to threaten Raff, I lol'd at that.
It's interesting that the villains provided a lot of the back story in this one. Thorne telling them of the winter (lol at him looking right at Jon and telling him that he's going to die) Littlefinger talking about The Hound's story. Viserys talking about the dragons.
It's funny that Tyrion berated Theon in The Battle of the Bastards about the first time they met, when Tyrion was actually kind of being the bigger dick in this episode.
I really liked Catelyn's speech before she arrests Tyrion, even though it makes me sad when she gets to the Frey man now. And I liked Tyrion giving Bran the plans for his saddle.
The editing in this episode was really wonky though. It's like scenes ended too quickly and it's cut really awkwardly during the aftermath of the joust when the Arryn squire is killed.

Enjoyed this episode much better than 'Lord Snow'.
It was interesting how much I dislike Viserys, either I'd forgotten or it's only now that I'm annoyed by his constant whining and prattling on about being the Dragon. What part of him is truly mad and how much simply believes he deserves to be the king? When he finally gets his it will be a relieve.
Tyrion teaching Jon Snow how to get along with others.
A solid hour of moving, though once again I am reminded of how slow the first two seasons moved compared to how we are zipping through the world now. The Littlefinger Westerosi transporter would have been greatly appreciated these first few seasons.

Probably the best of the first four episodes for me. Fantastic all the way through.

Yes! That scene with Dany and Viserys was a gem alcasinoroyale! I love that this was the first time we saw Daenerys really starting to stand up to Viserys and display her own anger and her own commanding voice. Drogo says she's fiery now because she has his baby inside her making her that way, but we all know this is just the beginning of Dany's own will being born and part of that she's learning by embracing her Dothraki husband's people. Dany is adaptable, which her brother is very much not. I hated that scene between him and Doreah only because it's so senseless why he loses his temper so quickly. Wrong about why Doreah even came to ask him to supper with Dany, it's obvious now as Dany later says, he's never going to be a good ruler because he's horribly impulsive, delusional about his rights and despises all people who are not on his level (or so he thinks). He is the essence of noble arrogance that many commoners hate and fall prey to because they get caught in the middle (like the butcher's boy Mycah). Daenerys treats her servants kindly and hates slavery and mistreatment. She is so polar opposite of Viserys. I have so much more to talk about in this episode - it's such a fantastic one for seeing a lot more serious character development and how it's revealing the conflicts to come, but I don't have time until later tonight! Highlights of the best: - Jon and Sam's instant friendship after Sam tells him why he's at the wall. - Sansa pointing out to Septa Mordane she's useless if she doesn't provide sons to the king (prince) and how women are only valuable for heirs. - Ned questioning Pycelle, the book of family heritages, the stunned look on his face when he sees Gendry for the first time. - Ned's talk with Arya about who she is and will be ... "That's not me." nearly made me cry. Her point echoes Sansa's - Jon's organized threat (yay Ghost!) on Rast not to hurt Sam anymore ... brotherhood forming. - Jorah's talk with Dany and her realization that they're never going home so long as her brother's leading.

I think this episode handled the introduction of new characters much better than 1x03. We get to know a bunch of new 'Cripples, Bastards, and Broken Things': Samwell, Hodor, Gendry and a proper introduction to Theon via Tyrion and Jamie talking with/about him. Kings Landing drives the Stark family further apart, as Sansa and Arya go into different directions: Sansa struggles the realisation that KL isn't what she expected it to be (Just remember how she was happily talking with Catelyn just a few episodes before? ). She blames Ned for her situation, while Arya is still close with him. I love the 'That's not me.' line. Arya refuses to be a Lady, but as we've seen throughout her storyline from her talk with Sandor about nothingness in S4 to her refusing to be 'No One' too, she might not behave like a Lady, but she is Arya Stark of Winterfell. It is also so painful to see Ned totally worn out by being Hand of the King. I like the scene with Viserys and Doreah as it provides some more backstory to the Targaryens and the dragons. Envie I don't think it was senseless that he loses his temper so quickly. That impulsiveness was in-character for me, especially if you consider how they talked about his great ancesteros and Viserys is currently so far away from the Iron Throne as he slowly loses his power to Dany. Dany finally standing up against her brother definitely was the fist pump moment of this episode.

Our boy Neddo's sharper-tongued than he gets credit for. He eviscerated Pycelle in this ep. "Lord Jon often came to me for counsel." "Why?"

We also get one of the few times Maisie's real accent comes through. One of her few slip ups. "Every hurrrrt is a lesson." I hear that Bristol.

Tyrion's guards didn't do him much good in the Inn, I suppose. Great scene though. That Cat Stark...

Very good episode, I was viewing it much more critically than I would usually do and found many interesting tidbits, which I noted in the symbolism and foreshadowing thread.
Generally, a very good episode perhaps my favorite of the first four episode. we are starting to know the characters, they are becoming more complex to us. Jon and his new friends at the Watch, the Lannister cockiness, Dany befriending Jorah and standing up to Viserys, Arya not wanting to be a proper Lady, Sansa worrying she won't be consider a proper Lady, Ned frustrated with his new position and afraid of what he's finding out and Robert, in his full drunken glory.

This episode covered so much territory but seemed a little disjointed to me - kept shifting so quickly from one locale to another...I don't know, the change from one scene to another just seemed very abrupt. I don't remember having that reaction before, though (maybe it's just my fatigue! ) It struck me in the opening that Bran is not afraid of the three-eyed raven in his dream. Not afraid, not shocked. I think the greenseer part of him is budding, beginning to grow. Loved seeing Hodor and felt sad all over again at losing him in 6x05. Very interesting that scene when Theon comes in Bran's room to tell him to get up and come down...such a preview of when Theon will later burst into Bran's room after he's taken WF and order Bran to get up. day dreamer said I thought the same thing myself. We did get some good backstory from this exchange, including a picture of Theon's uncle that we'll be meeting seasons later, but Tyrion treats Theon with such arrogance and contempt. I think it begins to lay some solid groundwork as to the demons that haunt Theon, though. I absolutely loved all the scenes at the Wall. After Sam has told that horribly hurtful story about his father to Jon, Jon makes Sam laugh with "Well, you can't get any worse." And then when Jon tells Sam why he didn't lay with Ros, and the sad sort of lostness hangs in the air, Sam makes Jon laugh with the "So you didn't know where to put it." And so are friendships forged! Loved Grenn, Pip - and after the encounter with Ghost, even Rast - interacting with Sam in the yard, unwilling to do more than give a brief little tap on Sam's arm. Ser Alister beats Jon and Sam up, figuratively, with his story of being caught out above the wall for 6 months during the last winter, and he's an ass about it, but he gives them the gift of reality, too, a harbinger of what they'll later themselves find beyond the wall. We got that great line, from Viserys no less, "The brave men didn't kill dragons. The brave men rode dragons." But it's Dany who holds the bravery. So glad you posted that clip with Dany and Viserys, alcasinoroyale. I love that scene, and my HBO Go kept skipping through that part. Dany's definitely got that handle on who she is and what she's about... love to see her dish it out to Viserys! On a lesser note, but noteworthy to me, were the things Dorea talked about seeing . . . "a man who could change his face as easily as other men change clothes" and the man from Asshai who had a sword made of dragon glass (we know when that'll come in pretty handy). And the theme of "Home" has a strong presence, with Dany and with Jorah (and how it motivates his actions.) Those words, "There's nothing to forgive", from Ned when Tobho Mott apologizes for Gendry's curt reply mirrored in S6 in Jon's response to Sansa when she apologizes for the way she used to act towards him. Another mirrored phrase, Jaime's haughty "I don't serve Lord Stark" to Jory, as Brienne will later declare "I don't serve the Starks, I serve Lady Catelyn." Ned and Cersei, the "trained to kill my enemy" standoff. LF being LF. So much good stuff in this episode.

Another great episode, we finally meet Sam, as others have stated, my favorite scenes were Jon setting Ghost onto Rast, Sam and Jon's bonding moment on the wall, and Dany showing Viserys who the "True" dragon was. Also we see the plot move forward with Ned getting closer to the secrets of Cersei and Jaime. Poor Tyrion, always being blamed for things of which he is innocent.
