Something I find really fascinating about A Song of Ice and Fire/Game of Thrones is how GRRM was able to draw from various periods, events, and prominent figures in history and incorporate those elements to help him build and create his own world. I think some of you Envie, probably know of this site history-behind-game-of-thrones.com/ but there's a threshold of articles that go into detail comparing and contrasting the series with a lot of real life history. I've always had an interest in The War of the Roses, which was probably one of GRRM's closest inspirations given that it follows similarly with The War of the Five Kings in terms of the fight for the Throne and which characters had a major role and impact on the war. For example, there's a lot of similarities between Robb Stark and Young Edward IV, Sansa Stark and Elizabeth of York, Cersei Lannister and Margaret of Anjou, Joffrey Baratheon and Edward of Lancaster, etc. Feel free to discuss how the various characters, events, and storylines in the series reflect and compare with real-life history.

While I have a lot more to say (particularly about Cersei and Robert) in regards to their historically similar counterparts, I am tired today, just got home and in no mood for my usual essays yet (I'm late on my symbolism essay for 1x03 re-watch!) ... so I'll just leave a bit of humor I found from the History-behind-GoT site: You UK citizens can back this up, "Fray Bentos" canned pies are a thing there? I think this is definitely no coincidence and Mr. Martin has a strange sense of humor - we all love him for it!

GRRM is a big history buff, so yeah a lot of his work is influenced by different historical events and cultures. Going with the War of the Roses, Dany seems to me to be a close equivalent to Henry VII.

Henry VII's coat of arms even had a dragon, but there's a quite a few similarities between them such as Dany growing up across the narrow sea and then Henry VII growing up across the English Channel.

Yup, a red dragon too (like House Targaryen) and a white dog (Jon) and a lion (Tyrion). You sneaky bastard, GRRM.

I like to think Ramsay's a mix between Vlad the Impaler, Uday and Qusay Hussein and this guy.

I thought it was interesting that on the show they made a big push to make Tommen into Henry the VIII. He married his older brothers wife. In the scene where they slept together he even offers her some pomegranate juice. The pomegranate was the badge of Kathryn of Aragon. Henry also depended on Cardinal Wolsey heavily in the first part of his reign. It was funny that they cast Jonathan Price as the High Sparrow since he had also played Cardinal Wolsey in Wolf Hall. https:/ /www.foxtel.com.au/content/dam/foxtel/insider/2015-04/wolf-hall_jonathon-pryce.jpg

See a lot of Tiberius in Stannis. Claudius in Tyrion.

So it seems Jon, Dany and even Tyrion share parallels/connections with Henry VII. Both Henry and Tyrion are called imp, I think that's probably the only thing connecting them. But it's a neat connection given the sigil.

But it's a neat connection given the sigil. Dany shares most of the parallels with Henry VII, then Jon and Tyrion. GRRM is sneaky in this.
