"I failed."
... "Good. Now go fail again."
(Davos to Jon in 6x03)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
We are now on the cusp of seeing Jon Snow's full character evolution become reality.
I have waited a very long time (almost 20 years!) to find out exactly who this misfit bastard boy really is and how he plays into the "Great Game" as Tyrion calls it. Season 6 has brought us not only the long speculated resurrection of Jon Snow after betrayal by his own Night's Watch brothers, but also the highly anticipated Tower of Joy scene played out in beautifully choreographed perfection on screen before our eyes. We anticipate the climax to that scene now, where the long time fan theory is revealed.
The answer that the show's writers gave George RR Martin and earned them the privilege of bringing this amazing epic story to life on screen.
“Who is Jon Snow’s Mother?”
In The Tower of Joy, we hope to hear the words young Ned Stark promised to his dying sister Lyanna and to see newborn Jon enter the world of Westeros an orphan boy whose very existence could have ignited more wars to come were it ever revealed. The promise Ned kept and the final result of that promise who has returned from death itself to win back his family's home in Winterfell and who now faces an even greater challenge ahead of him.
I would love to hear your thoughts and speculations on Jon's self identity, his character arc, and where he's going from here on out. I don't know if Jon himself will learn of his Mother and Father in the Season 6 finale, or if they will hold off having him learn of it next season - but we the audience will finally know for sure one way or the other.
Please watch this beautiful video that inspired me to title the topic of Jon's Character post as "The Promise" because I feel it really sums up the story so nicely and leaves everything perfectly aligned but open ended for what comes next for the bastard boy of Winterfell.
A beautiful essay posted by /u/i_miss_arrow on reddit really sums up so well some of the confusion and emotions I felt about the great battle at Winterfell in 6x09 that has probably come to be one of the most epic moments on television and Game of Thrones alike. It was much more than just Jon retaking the Stark's home. It was truly his re-birth.
This is the most beautiful tribute ever. Zurik is amazing. Simply amazing. HBO should really hire him, seriously. He has such an eye for detail and the symbolism and cutting the scenes together in way that makes it one fluid and beautiful story. I'm crying!
I know I'm in the minority but I still think Jon's a bastard But if he isn't I wouldn't be surprised either.
You do realize that everything that happened after the Stark forces got encircled is just a dream, right? Jon didn't become a KitN, this is what actually happened:
I know I'm in the minority but I still think Jon's a bastard But if he isn't I wouldn't be surprised either. I still have my doubts as well. I just don't really buy the polyamorous marriage theory. The KitN scene in 6x10 just proved it doesn't even really matter anyway. I could see a situation where Jon is king in the end if Dany dies.
The KitN scene in 6x10 just proved it doesn't even really matter anyway. I could see a situation where Jon is king in the end if Dany dies. I can buy it, I just don't buy that anyone would have really accepted the bigamy had Rhaegar won. Aegon I and his sister-wives had fucking dragons, but the polygamy angle appears to have been thoroughly junked after Jaeharys I's deal with the Faith. Guess incest was more important for the Targs to keep. In the Dance of Dragons novellas, it's clear marriage is only considered as a one man/one woman arrangement, and that was only a century or so post-polygamy. Rhaegar was living 100 years post-dragons and 200 or so years post-polygamy, so why should his second marriage be considered legitimate and binding? (I'm not a big Rhaegar fan.) Agreed that the KitN scene proved this is a moot point, don't think it was a coincidence that that particular Jon scene was paired with the reveal. But I know this kind of minutiae is very important to the Rhaegar/Lyanna shippers.
I fear for Jon though. D&D said that the crowning was made purposely similar to Robb's and that they feared for Jon.
Most likely there will be some kind of "there must always be a Night King" and Jon must become a White Walker so he can save the world. Then he leaves to the Lands of Always Winter alone, or maybe with Ghost, if he's still alive. Tbh I'm more scared of Jon or Dany or both (ugh) getting the IT in the end than them dying...
I would be ok with a sacrifice type ending for Jon as much as it would make me sad. GRRM did say it would be bittersweet so I take it we're going to lose some beloved main heroes and others will survive to go on. I never had any illusions of a happy-together ending. I have always held out hope that the Iron Throne would be melted to a metal puddle when Cersei burns down King's Landing, but since they had her burn down the sept, I'm not sure they'll go for the entire city unless she tries to and Jaime has to stop her the same way he stopped Aerys for the poetic symmetry angle. Regardless, I don't know if the vision Daenerys had of the burnt/ash/snow throne room had is true or not. I hope it is and that she has to come to terms with the fact her ancestors rulership ways are gone and she forges a new beginning as she promised Yara (and probably Ellaria and Olenna too). That new beginning would be independent kingdoms allied against the White Walkers.
