Another episode I'd almost entirely forgotten except for a choice few scenes such as the infamous parley between Baratheon brothers, Joffrey's torture of Sansa and then the whores... and the shadow-baby birth of course. Those major things seem to be remembered most though the episode has some decent smaller moments too. Probably one of my favorite moments was Renly's snarky comebacks at Stannis which of course riles him up even if he doesn't show it. But again, those major moments make us forget the best ones which were quiet and easily forgotten. Like this gem: When Tyrion asks Sansa if she wants to end the engagement to Joffrey, she claims he is her one true love in a robotic voice as she leaves. And Tyrion says: I loved this line and this moment. Tyrion realizes Sansa is smarter than people give her credit for... and we see her using her "Courtesy Armor" many times to save herself.

Other noteworthy scenes this episode: - Tywin's arrival at Harrenhal and immediately noticing Arya is a girl (if not Arya herself) and chastising the Mountain and his men for torturing good workers.
- Tyrion cornering Lancel and blackmailing him into spying for him on Cersei
- Littlefinger trying to grab Catelyn's hand to beg her for another chance and her pulling a knife on him ... (he also lied about Arya!)
And the not so great ones ... - Robb & Talisa first meeting. I never really liked how it was done or how saucy/mysterious they tried to make her seem. There wasn't really any chemistry there IMO
- The Qarth "Thirteen" introduction didn't really do much for me and felt over-done
- The taunting from Melisandre at Davos on the boat-ride ashore was never really very compelling or believable
Best "Bad Guy" award goes to Joffrey this week, not the Mountain or Tickler or Amory Larch, they were just thugs. But in Joffrey, we saw just how sadistic this boy-king could be. He wasn't turned on by the whores being sensual with one another, only when he forced Ros to hurt the other girl. As uncomfortable as the scene was, it really put a fine point on the fact that Joffrey has complete power over people (except for Tyrion) and that it excites him. That's the most dangerous type. Had he not been taken out, he would have been as evil as Mad King Aerys torturing people for amusement or to make a statement.

Did D&D plan to have the Tyrell brothers introduced later on? It feels quite odd that Loras is in Renly's Kingsguard but then in the later seasons Olenna does everything in her power to keep Loras out of the Kingsguard so he can inherit and continue the Tyrell line.

I thought there were some pretty good moments, Tyrion saving Sansa was one of my favorites... The Parley with Renly and Stannis was good... And I loved Tywin, I usually do though, Charles Dance nails him perfectly, and steals most scenes he is in... I really liked the addition in the show of Arya serving him instead of Roose Bolton, they share some of my favorite scenes.

I never really understood their reasoning for leaving all other Tyrells out either except to suspect the Tyrells don't actually play a big part in the end-game of the story because as it stands right now they're without an heir unless they introduce someone new on the show. In the books it will play out differently but still, whatever heir (Garlan I think?) there is probably doesn't participate in anything big otherwise they'd have kept him in the show is my guess.

Ah. We open with a fart joke and then a fade-out used to skip a battle. Oof.

Cool though that we meet Talisa and Roose in the same scene. The reason Robb's killed and the man who kills him.
I was never too big on Talisa but I don't despise her and pine for the inclusion of Jeyne Westerling as some do (since Jeyne's essentially a non-character). D and D even wrote some decent scenes with her here and there and her stuff in 309 is actually really good and almost saves her as a character. But the way that Vanessa Taylor wrote her was unbearable. And since she wrote her intro scene, Talisa makes a very bad first impression.

Joffrey and Meryn Trant seem to have a telekinetic connection. In 201 he just has to mention his name and Meryn starts pouring wine down Dontos's throat. And here he just says, "Ser Meryn" and he knows to beat Sansa. I guess weenie minds think alike.

Casting one more Tyrell brother or just name drop him a few times would have been enough. I'm wondering how Lady Olenna rules the Reach, she has really no claim on the lands. Ah. We open with a fart joke and then a fade-out used to skip a battle. Oof. Classical stuff. Now I watched that scene again and I just have to drop my rating after that. Poor. As poor as the Pycelle fart scene in S6 or the 13-year old Dothraki's with a shit sense of humor.

As poor as the Pycelle fart scene in S6 or the 13-year old Dothraki's with a shit sense of humor. I thought the Pycelle fart was really funny actually. Because it's a character moment overall and based in what we know about him and it shows how all of his grandstanding washes away in the moment he's confronted with the person he's talking about. That's how you can make a fart joke work in a show like this. It's not that fart jokes can never be funny and never be good writing. They can be great. Shakespeare even did them. Queen Elizabeth I made one of the greatest of all time. It's just that the one that opened this one was a cheap laugh. Not an earned laugh like I feel the Pycelle gag was.

I really despise fart jokes. I can understand why these soldiers would be making fart jokes, during my conscription fart jokes were 80% of the humor, so I just lost my taste to them. I just feel that they're really childish and really cheap.

Can't blame Hot Pie for pissing himself. Harrenhal's such a terrifying torture factory it might as well be one giant urinal.
