I don't blame her quite so much for that one. That's a line that required ham-acting really for it to at least have camp-value. Generally I think her and Kit's weaker moments early on in the show were due to their being straight out of drama school and more theatrically trained than on-camera trained. As well as their characters being written too young for the actors. That was fixed imo when s4 rolled around and both of them brought stronger chops to the table. I don't really buy that though. Emilia was better in S1 than S2. It was the shitty writing I blame. I actually have A LOT of problems with her acting in s1 that I don't mention often because of fear of castration from you and MOIAF. That said I'm much more inclined to defend her acting from critiques of it in s4, s5 and s6.

Okay, Konrad, stop listening to the same five or six Beach Boys songs on repeat and marveling at the ridiculous chord changes and harmonies and at least attempt to watch the fucking episode.

Your opinion is valued. I don't think Emilia is winning any awards any time soon. And on a show with some serious heavyweights I understand she gets single out at times. It's just the amount of criticism she gets that bothers me. Some of it really nasty. She's made Daenerys an iconic character though, and is responsible for some of the very best moments of the series. I don't think she gets enough credit for the times she is quite good. I expect us to disagree some over season 4 as well. I don't hold that season nearly as high as a lot of the fandom tbh. Not that it was bad, but they didn't do certain things justice imo. At least not when you consider the source material. We'll get to that later though.

Goddamn can Alfie act. A really great opening to the episode. I love the jumping in the timeline from Bran hearing about Torrhen's Square being under siege in the past episode to opening with the Ironborn having already scaled WF's walls. The show should do that more often. Cover ground offscreen and leave the audience playing catch-up so as to intensify the sense of danger and confusion in the scenes and put us in the characters' shoes. It really works.

Though of course I know the differentiation between 2010 Emilia and all other Emilia irks you too... But yeah, I'm a huge s4 fanboy. So the debates will be a-plenty. But not as many as during the s5 rewatch when I throw out 10s willy-nilly and make the case for it being better than s1...

The rewatch will be interesting when we get to S4. I remember liking a lot of it. One thing I've never forgiven is the terrible fight choreography in what was the biggest fight in the show or books. Pedro was so good as Oberyn too. So dissapointing not to nail that scene. I already know we disagree over Cousin Orson. Then again I've changed my opinion on the show HotU over the years, so maybe I'll like S4 more than I remember. Doubt I'll ever like the Viper/Mountain fight though.

David Nutter was given the RW to direct on the strength of his work in the KL riot scene. Which was a good call. It also really parallels his work in the Walk of Shame sequence in 510. I hope he's back for s8.

Aside from everything in Qarth, I thought this was a stellar episode. Theon taking Winterfell, the beginning of his downfall. Loved the scenes with Tywin and Arya. Jon and Qhorin have some great scenes. I like Jon calling him out about not being able to tame a wildthing after he told Jon he couldn't tame Ghost. Tyrion slapping Joffery makes me giggle every time, I could watch those on Gif for hours.

Resuming it now. Just got through that Qarth scene I bemoaned above. It has not improved on the billionth rewatch. Though Ducksauce's reaction shot when the Spice King says "she has a talent for drama, this one" is an evergreen.

Pre-RW Roose was such a snake in the grass. Just lying in wait. Talking about his bastard, calling out other families for being treasonous. Just waving and winking at the people who knew the RW was coming and making bunny ears behind Robb's back.

WHOA, Theon was eating an apple in the Osha-seduction scene just like Rams was in 604 when Osha tried to do the same.
