I was going to start Outlander since I ended up liking the show so much, but of course the first one was the only one at Barnes and Noble that didn't have a $10 dollar version available and no way am I paying $18 for a bigger size. B&N strikes me down again. I considered reading it but like ASOIAF that's a 20 year long still unfinished series. I'm not doing that twice to myself. WHen it's finished I'll consider reading it.

The difference between ASOIAF and the Outlander series is that the books are somewhat independent of each other. Different characters are featured in different books - and thanks to the time travel factor, you even have different time periods. It's MUCH less painful to wait for than sitting on so many cliffhangers with ASOIAF. I encourage you to dive in!! It's such a good series.

I liked being surprised (though really, knowing the history of the Jacobites there is much less surprise ) while watching the show, it was a refresher after five seasons of knowing most of the things that will happen on Game of Thrones, so I'm thinking about reading the books as the seasons come. Since I still have to read Cornwell's Saxon Series books, I was planning on reading Outlander and Dragonfly now and busying myself with other books until season 3 when I can read Voyager. But fuck me if I'm paying $18 when it could be available for $10. First the delivery problems, now this. Barnes and Noble has an iron hold on me.

I finally finished Bloodline. It was one of the better books from the new canon, but the huge plot with Leia took a little too long to get into for my liking. Still worth a read if you're interested in trying some of the new expanded books.

I'm getting ready to start A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms. Started the first Dunk and Egg several years ago but got distracted and never got back to it. Hope that having all the novellas in one book will keep my feet to the fire. Everybody else already read all of them?

I'm reading The Wheel of Fortune by Susan Howatch. She takes the story of Edward the III and his sons and later his grandsons and weaves a story through the events of the 20th century. It is quite good and I highly recommend it if you like a long book and the War of the Roses. It was published in the 1980s, but it is very good.

They're actually what really got me into the Targaryens. I always loved Dany, but it's cool to read a story that takes place while House Targaryen was still the royal family. The second story is probably my favorite (The Sworn Sword) which gives some background on the Blackfyre rebellion. Some great characters in those novellas other than just Dunk & Egg too, like Baelor Breakspear and Lady Rohanne Webber.

The Blackfyre rebellion, especially, is one of those places where I usually get lost in book discussions, so I'm glad to know this will fill in lots of those gaps.

The second story is probably my favorite (The Sworn Sword) which gives some background on the Blackfyre rebellion. Some great characters in those novellas other than just Dunk & Egg too, like Baelor Breakspear and Lady Rohanne Webber. My favorite is definitely Daeron the Drunken. He's funny like Dolorous Edd, only less downtrodden. “Egg has the truth of it. Aerion's quite the monster. He thinks he’s a dragon in human form, you know. That’s why he was so wroth at that puppet show. A pity he wasn't born a Fossoway, then he’d think himself an apple and we’d all be a deal safer, but there you are.” The mental image of Aerion believing himself an apple in human form is just too much for me. I hope we'll see more of Egg's brothers in stories to come, including young Maester Aemon. The last books I've read were The Girl on the Train by Paula Hawkins mentioned above (IMHO it was decent, but a tad too depressing, and personally I felt the author was cheating with one of the protagonists not mentioning a certain name in her diary) and The Haunting of Hill House by Shirley Jackson, which I loved, though I can't claim I have been scared by it. The ending was unsettling, though (and sad, depending on one's PoV). Perhaps the best about the story was that a lot was left to readers' imagination.

I love them! Probably just as much as ASoIaF tbh. I love them this much too. I am hoping with all my appendages crossed that it will be Dunk & Egg who are spun off by HBO when GOT leaves a gaping hole. And I agree that it was these novels that made me truly appreciate the Targaryens - see them more human than as just the royal dynasty they are. And LOVE LOVE Lady Rohanne.... izzue, I can't wait for you to dive back into them!!!

I thought stories of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms were charming, but I don't think they are on par with ASoIaF. Nevertheless they are quite entertaining and fun to read. It was also interesting to have the additional information on the Targaryens. If the stories were made into a show, I would watch if for no other reason than to see Lady Rohanne and her hair.

Thanks, Maesteress - you've got me even more excited about starting them...if I only could carve out some t-i-m-e! And Lovely Lyanna, you'll be my back-up if I'm disappointed, however...it's Lady Rohanne and her hair that I'll be really looking forward to!
