The scene of the Hound and Bronn at the tavern seems a bit out of nowhere. Unless I'm forgetting something there was no buildup to it. Guess Sandor was jealous of the attention Bronn was getting from the Lannister men, and the whore. Idk, it was a bit odd. I actually did like the scene though. Props to Bronn. I'd be scared af if the Hound was fucking with me like that.

This was a great episode. It's been a long time since I watched it (maybe I watched it somewhere during Season 3 or 4 once more) so it was a real treat to sit back and enjoy it all over again. I'm tired after watching both episode 8 and 9 in one evening so I won't go on about it here, I wrote up a lengthy review over in the rate-the-episode thread. One thing I'll note here for Season 7 speculation is this: The show has proven they'll bring back small details from the first few Seasons that we'd forgotten such as the wildfire caches much as Cersei had Qyburn find out about. I think this map is a clue too because it's something Varys showed Tyrion way back when - all those tunnels under the city were not only places to hide wildfire, but ways to get around the city without anyone on the surface knowing. That's how Tyrion brought his troops out a cistern tunnel to surprise the enemy on the beach from behind. Now, we know, both Tyrion and Varys are with Daenerys. So this (and the map) should reassure us that Daenerys is in good hands and not about to get caught in any sort of trap by Cersei in regards to invading the city. She's not going to send her troops in unaware of the threat of the wildfire.

So dissapointed in Sansa for not going with Sandor. "I'll be safe here" It took her a long time to finally wise up didn't it?

Alright. Getting started. Spam-time. How did Davos ever raise such a weenie son as Matthos? Jesus. That kid's annoying. And to think this is his most sympathetic scene.

Though tbh this episode's so good that my capacity to pause it and spam this thread about it is quite limited.

Otherwise she'd have left. True. I'm not sure how much she would have actually known about Stannis though. Tyrion mentioned Stannis would burn any Lannister he could get his hands on. I wonder how well known his conversion to the Red God was supposed to be on the show at that point? Although, if Stannis had won, I doubt he'd have been too keen about losing half his kingdom to Robb. Who knows, he might have held Sansa as a hostage. Obviously he would be a better captor than Joffrey though. Unless Mel started going on about king's blood...

Obviously he would be a better captor than Joffrey though. Unless Mel started going on about king's blood... There's a bit in ACOK during the parley with Stannis and Renly where Stannis promises to free Cat's daughters from the Lannisters. But Cat observes that his tone suggests he'd get them from the Lannisters, dead or alive. So she at least didn't buy that Sansa's safety (or Arya's though we know she wasn't in KL) was his immediate concern. But I guess Sansa assumed since she was their de facto hostage that she'd be better off with Stannis than as Joffrey's betrothed. If her being Stan's hostage could've led to negotiations and a similar deal being struck between Stan and Robb to the one that Cat made with Renly, I guess it's possible that something could be worked out. But regardless of that possibility both Stan and Robb had no such luck.

You both already laid it out so nicely about what could have happened if Stannis had won or Sansa had taken Sandor's offer to run. Sansa most likely did believe Stannis would help return her to her brother even if remaining his hostage. She clearly was saying she trusted Sandor not to hurt her but she wasn't prepared to flee yet and since the Lannisters won, Sansa's growth into her own strength hasn't happened yet. She's always been represented by butterflies or dragonflies early in the show which could be metaphorical for transformation/change. Birds too, as symbols of freedom until the time she sews that epic dark-Sansa mockingbird dress to signal her readiness to fly on her own mission of deceit (she and Katniss' designer Cinna would have loved one another!). They do a lot of symbolism with Sansa in the show and it was there in the books as well in different ways (like that ugly doll in the Sandor scene). Her "courtesy armor" is literally her costume choice to cover her true intent on the show. She dresses like the King's Landing ladies to try and fit in, she speaks/acts in ways that will please everyone though it only irritates Cersei ("you're just perfect aren't you little dove") and occasionally the real Sansa Stark slips out when confronting the hateful men controlling her such as things she said to Joffrey and then again later to Ramsay that were clearly bold and antagonistic truths about how shitty they are. In this episode when Joffrey makes her kiss his stupid sword she used clever off-hand remarks about how her brother led the vanguard and was always where the fighting was thickest to put a fine point on Joffrey's true nature - his ugly cowardice. A fact we'll see later in the battle when he runs home to Mommy when summoned because he's afraid. Later we'll see Sansa do this same clever verbal trick with Ramsay ... pointing out how he's still a bastard because he was legitimized by another bastard (Joffrey). That one earned her a lot of torment from Ramsay much worse than even Joffrey could dish out to her. Over the years Sansa's character has really grown on me moreso in the show than in the books. I understand her much better now and appreciate her careful maneuvers to survive. "I'm a Stark. I've always been a Stark. I did what I had to do to survive" she says in addressing the pointed criticisms of Lyanna Mormont in Season 6. Hits the nail on the head. For as much criticism as Sansa has received over the years - many failed completely to see those rare moments her Stark bravery shined through. Nothing made me happier than seeing her new dress, boldly adorned with the Stark wolf, her hair done in the northern simple braid again and a thick wolf fur mantle around her. Her costume reflects her final growth from being a scared little bird/butterfly in a cage to a full-fledged Stark. There's a great video I linked in the fan-video thread that showcases all of this perfectly called "Bury" and many fans over the seasons have done symbolic analysis of Sansa's costumes. Here's the most detailed one I have ever read that I love. I love symbolism in the show (though I've fallen off the wagon in writing them for the re-watch, sorry!). imgur.com/a/tpAhV

This is a fantastic episode, Tyrion was awesome for the whole thing. Good catch on the map of the tunnels. I really liked the scene with Bronn and the Hound. Imagine how different the show would be had Sansa left with Sandor, she and Arya probably reunite, she may even be in Bravoos with Arya. Anyhow, Cersei was epic, as usual. I loved Stannis refusing to admit defeat and wanting to stay and fight.
