My Kindle has died!!!
This is a major problem. I'm devastated and having withdrawals. I have over 1000 books on my Kindle and it goes everywhere with me. If I can't get it to do a reboot, I'll have another one here by the end of the week. At least I'm reading aCoK, so I'll just pick up the book, but this is serious folks.

Balerion's Whiskers , I just read about your computer problems, and now this! Do you have Kindle apps on your phone or your computer? That would at least let you keep reading. Or, better yet, you can go to read.amazon.com and read anything you've got on your Kindle. In fact, I think I'll PM you about this - we gotta get you reading again pronto!

Thank the gods old and new....I have it working again! An on-line help from amazon told me to hook it to my laptop for a special hard reboot. That worked and I'm back in business. I will treat myself to the new Oasis after Christmas though...betting that the price comes down considerably for the holidays.

I've tried reading e-books and they do not feel the same to me for some reason. I feel more connected with an actual book, I don't know why. I wish I like e-reading more because it would make it so much easier to hold the book/

Then came the night I fell asleep lying in bed, and my Kindle crashed to the floor, cracked the keyboard part of it to pieces. So....now, when I read in bead, I try to make it a 'real' book!

I've tried reading e-books and they do not feel the same to me for some reason. I'm totally converted and use my kindle daily. I do not like reading on my tablet or laptop though. I prefer the paper-like screen as opposed to the backlit computer screen. (Borg:"Resistance is futile, you have been assimilated...") I have made myself a book-like cover, so it feels like a real book in my hands.

Well I got my six books in.
The Wheel of Fortune - Susan Howatch - Overall it was a good book. It's just short of 1000 pages, so do not start unless you are a dedicated reader. For the most part I thought it was really good. Most of the characters are really interesting. It has 6 POV characters, so it is interesting to get their reactions and beliefs about the same events. It was going great but I felt that Howatch dropped the ball with the last POV. The character is a third generation character, and is in the late sixities or seventies and his speech patterns are ridiculous. I kept laughing at the choice of words. The man kept blowing his mind, which just sounds ridiculous. It does not flow well and the author appeared as if she was trying to hard to make him a part of his time period. Also the way the author had the last POV character save the house was ludicrous. It's kind of a shame. The whole book is good, but then the ending just sort of dies on the vine. Still the book was the best book I read in JuLy
Lost Communities of Virginia - Ran across this at the library and could hardly wait to get home. There was no need to hurry as it was really bad. Virginia has a lot of communities that disappeared. Some were absorbed into other communities. Others just died away. My father was from a lost community and it is impossible to find out anything about it. I have some of his books and his name and the lost town are written in them in his beautiful handwriting. Unfortunately the book only contains towns that still exist. They are not hustling and bustling communities, but they still exist. They have people grocery stores and post offices. One has a great horse show they put on that still attracts people from out of state, so I just do not view that as a lost community. Badly written and very disappointing.
Femme Fatale - a book on Mata Hari. Would not recommend. I knew very little about Mata Hari, so I was curious. I really do not know more after reading it.
Bull Mountain - Read this on a recommendation from a friend and the fact ITV is developing it into a show. It's got a lot of POV characters. (That seems to be everywhere these day. I wonder why LOL). The characters are very predictable though. I just thought it was a bit too expected and the characters were just stereotypes. He writer also tried too hard in making the characters colorful. He actually used lines from country songs. Like rednecks go around quoting Trace Atkins or something. Wanted to like the book, because my great grandfather was a notorious booklegger in this area. If I had a dollar for every time someone tells me some crazy, romanticized story about my great grandfather and his exploits, I could retire. Perhaps the television show will be better. The very bare bones of a decent story are there, the author just did not fill in the gaps. A lot of times his very short chapters are more of a description of a person and there is no need to have their point of view.
Sydney Chambers and The Shadow oF Death - I like the Grantchester show on PBS, so I thought I would check it out. Sydney is so charming on the show. It's not bad.
Laura Lippman - Girl in the Green Raincoat. I like Lippman's books. This one is decent, but not one of her best.
All and all I did not have a great month in July. The Wheel of Fortune was very good, but the rest ranged from pretty good to really bad.
