Continuing with the guilds, Screen Actors Guild‐American Federation of Television and Radio Artists has delivered their awards. Unlike PGA, SAG-AFTRA has crowned the front-runners in all five categories. Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri confirmed their status as presumptive winner by taking home Cast, Lead Actress (Frances McDormand) and Supporting Actor (Sam Rockwell). Gary Oldman took Lead Actor and Allison Janney won Supporting Actress. Wonder Woman took home the Stunt Ensemble prize.

Best Actor - The big surprise is Denzel Washington getting in with a critical and financial flop over James Franco.

In a show of bombing of my own I forgot to post the Artios Awards results which were presented on January 18th. The Artios Awards is presented by the Casting Society of America and they are pretty irrelevant because the Academy lacks an analogous Best Casting award. Nonetheless it may show what the members in the Casting Branch of the Academy may like in their Oscar winners.
The Greatest Showman won the Big Budget Comedy award, beating Beauty and the Beast, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, Logan Lucky and Wonder. Dunkirk took the Big Budget Drama award succeeding over Baby Driver, Detroit, The Post and Wonder Woman. On the Studio or Independent categories, Lady Bird won the Comedy award over Battle of the Sexes, The Disaster Artist, Get Out, Girls Trip and I, Tonya while Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri took the Drama award over Gifted, The Florida Project, The Shape of Water and Split. The Low Budget award went to Beach Rats over Crown Heights, It Comes at Night, My Cousin Rachel and To the Bone. The Animation award was won by Coco which beat Cars 3, The Nut Job 2: Nutty By Nature and Rock Dog,

The American Cinema Editors has presented their Eddie Awards honoring film editing. To no one's surprise Dunkirk beat Blade Runner 2049, Molly's Game, The Post and The Shape of Water in the Drama category reaffirming its front runner status in this category. On the Comedy or Musical front, I, Tonya took the award over Baby Driver, Get Out, Lady Bird and Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri.
Dunkirk taking the Drama award even over most-nominated film The Shape of Water isn't a surprise as Dunkirk is a war movie with a lot of action set pieces. However, I, Tonya beating Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri which was viewed until recently as the front runner for Best Picture is worrying and may be showing weakness in their status.

The Art Directors Guild has delivered their awards celebrating production design. They presented awards in three categories: Period, Fantasy and Contemporary. In Period, The Shape of Water beat Darkest Hour, Dunkirk, Murder on the Orient Express and The Post. Fantasy went to Blade Runner 2049 over Beauty and the Beast, Star Wars: The Last Jedi, War for the Planet of the Apes and Wonder Woman. Finally Contemporary was won by Logan beating Downsizing, Get Out, Lady Bird and Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri.
The Period and Fantasy categories weren't surprising but Logan beating Get Out, Lady Bird and Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri which are seen as front runners is surprising.

The Directors Guild of America presented their awards yesterday. The DGA award is alongside PGA and SAG the best barometers for Best Picture since it shows where the guilds are weighing to.
Guillermo del Toro affirms his front runner status for Best Director by beating Greta Gerwig, Martin McDonagh, Christopher Nolan and Jordan Peele. For Documentary, Matthew Heineman (City of Ghosts) wins over Ken Burns and Lynn Novick (The Vietnam War), Bryan Fogel (Icarus), Steve James (Abacus: Small Enough to Jail) and Errol Morris (Wormwood). In the First Feature category Jordan Peele took the award over Geremy Jasper (Patti Cake$), William Oldroyd (Lady Macbeth), Taylor Sheridan (Wind River) and Aaron Sorkin (Molly's Game).
Right now this is the guilds' wins rundown:
The Shape of Water - PGA DGA ADG Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri - SAG CSA Dunkirk - ACE CSA Lady Bird - CSA
I, Tonya - ACE Blade Runner 2049 - ADG Logan - ADG The Greatest Showman - CSA Beach Rats - CSA
With both PGA and DGA, The Shape of Water has overtook Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri as front runner both in Picture and Director.

The Guild of Music Supervisors presented their awards on February 8th. Although there isn't an award for Music Supervision, lack of a guild for music composers and/or songwriters makes me use this one as an approximation. They divide their awards by budget: over 25 millions, under 25 millions, under 10 millions and under 5 millions. The winners were respectively: Pitch Perfect 3 over Beauty and the Beast, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, The Greatest Showman and Coco; Lady Bird over Girls Trip, I, Tonya, How To Be A Latin Lover and The Star; Before I Fall over War On Everyone and Film Stars Don’t Die In Liverpool; Call Me By Your Name over Ingrid Goes West, The Florida Project, Patti Cake$ and Fun Mom Dinner. The award for original song went to “Mystery of Love” from Call Me By Your Name. It beat “Remember Me” from Coco, “This Is Me” from The Greatest Showman, “Home” from Ferdinand and “Mighty River” from Mudbound.

The BAFTA's are this weekend, right? Should be interesting to see who wins. I think their pics are usually not that far off from the Academies pics, right?

Although BAFTA has been aligning with AMPAS fairly often, sometimes the British factor does derail things. Like Dev Patel taking the Bafta over front-runner Mahershala Ali who ended up winning the Oscar.

The British Academy of Film and Television Arts has presented their awards today and here are the winners:
Best Film - Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri. The film really needed this win, specially after losing the Critics' Choice Award and the PGA Award to The Shape of Water. Now each is going into the Oscar with two precursors each which give us a true race.
Best Direction - Guillermo del Toro, The Shape of Water. With this award, del Toro has gathered all the precursors: Golden Globe, Critics' Choice Award, DGA Award and Bafta. This makes him the absolute front-runner.
Best Actor - Gary Oldman, Darkest Hour
Best Actress - Frances McDormand, Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri
Best Supporting Actor - Sam Rockwell, Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri
Best Supporting Actress - Allison Janney, I, Tonya
For the first time ever all four categories in all four precursors went to the same four people. This makes these the front-runners in acting.
Best Adapted Screenplay - Call Me by Your Name. Having won this, the Critics' Choice Award and the WGA award makes it the front-runner.
Best Original Screenplay - Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri. It has also won the Golden Globe. On the other Hand, Get Out took home the Critics' Choice Award and the WGA Award which give us a race between the two.
Best Cinematography - Blade Runner 2049. This win alongside, the ASC Award and the Critics' Choice Award might be signaling that poor Roger Deakins will finally win the Oscar with his 14th nod.
Best Costume Design - Phantom Thread. It has also won the Critics' Choice Award. The CDG will present its awards on February 20th but it will probably win its category, making it the front-runner.
Best Editing - Baby Driver. This film has also won the Critics' Choice Award in a tie with Dunkirk. Meanwhile Dunkirk has taken the ACE Eddie Award in Drama but Baby Driver lost the ACE Eddie Award in Comedy to I, Tonya. So, we have a race between Baby Driver and Dunkirk with I, Tonya running as third. Ironically neither of the Best Picture front-runners seem to be in the running for this award.
Best Makeup and Hair - Darkest Hour. It has also won the Critics' Choice Award. The MUAHSG will present their awards on February 24th and Darkest Hour is nominated there.
Best Original Music - The Shape of Water. It has also won the Golden Globe and the Critics' Choice Award making it the front-runner.
Best Production Design - The Shape of Water. It has also won the ADG Award and the Critics' Choice Award making it the front-runner.
Best Sound - Dunkirk. The Oscars have two sound categories: Editing and Mixing. Dunkirk is nominated in both. The respective guilds will present their awards on February 24th and February 18th.
Best Special Visual Effects - Blade Runner 2049. First big win for Blade Runner 2049. War for the Planet of the Apes won both the main VES Award and the Critics' Choice Award.
Best Animated Film - Coco. The front-runner after winning this, the Golden Globe, the Annie Award and the Critics' Choice Award.
Best Documentary - I Am Not Your Negro. Its winning is irrelevant because it was nominated for last year's Oscars.
Best Film Not in the English Language - The Handmaiden. It was eligible for last year's Oscars but wasn't submitted.
Best Short Animation - Poles Apart. Not nominated for the Oscars.
Best Short Film - Cowboy Dave. Not nominated for the Oscars.
Outstanding Debut by a British Writer, Director or Producer - Rungano Nyoni (Writer/Director) and Emily Morgan (Producer), I Am Not a Witch.
Outstanding British Film - Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri.
EE Rising Star Award - Daniel Kaluuya.
