I'm sure there will be some great scenes there, both in the show and in the books, but you can't convince me that Sam will achieve there anything that he couldn't achieve at CB or any other castle at the Wall if GRRM and D&D just changed some things. Disagree but not here to convince you, your opinion is your own. The Citadel has to play an important part with that massive library of knowledge. They spent a great deal making it look incredible in that brief glimpse we got of it in Season 6 including the very obvious astrolabe floating in the middle that is the entire centerpiece of the Game of Thrones Intro. Sam could not learn how to heal Jorah of Grayscale (for the show's version) at the wall, nor would he learn of Jon's heritage there or how to forge Valyrian steel (if they go that route). There are a great many things Sam needs to learn at the Citadel and I think it's important enough it warranted inclusion on the show where many other stories (LSH, fAegon, Arianne) etc were dropped. Anything put in the show, in my opinion, has significance to the end story, especially by Season 6 where things begin to really condense to just the main stories and in 7 and 8 where it's going to speed up tremendously. The time for side-stories and dead end stories is over. Everything at this point matters.

You spoke about the Oldtown at previous thread, and I think that's another case of a dead end storyline created after ASOS. I'm sure there will be some great scenes there, both in the show and in the books, but you can't convince me that Sam will achieve there anything that he couldn't achieve at CB or any other castle at the Wall if GRRM and D&D just changed some things. I think Oldtown will amount to something in TWOW (the book), but judging from the leaks, it doesn't really amount to much in the show. The maesters' bias and their hold on knowledge in Westeros was the truly fascinating thing going on there, not Rhaegar marriage documents or greyscale cures. Of course, it's still possible Lads omitted the juicy stuff!

Jeez, that last thread went by fast. Hopefully there's cause for this one to zip by too.

That conversation got cut off due to restarting the new Leakbowl thread, but both jared and moiaf commented on this as well and I think they're on the right track here... the secret of how to defeat the Night King may very well be buried in those tomes Sam steals but not read about until the end of Season 7 or start of Season 8. They need something significant to carry Sam into the final season as well. The less significant stuff (Grayscale cures and Jon's heritage) are just teasers and will happen in Season 7. I think the rest is saved for Season 8 and the grand finale.

In the name of R'hllor, The Seven, The Old Gods, The Drowned God, The Other, the Many-Faced God and every other religion in Planetos - let Sam find out something useful about the white walkers and how to defeat them. Not only saving Jorah and finding out about Jon's birthname and where he comes from. Too much savagery in this post for my viewing tastes.

I just think GRRM likes to improvise too much and that he doesn't have a good answer to many mysteries. Some of his mysteries are only mysteries because people don't want to accept that the resolution is so stupid, like with "Dornish masterplan". Ironically, maybe the best thing to happen to his legacy is the fact that he won't finish the books.

I think the Jaqen thing might amount to something interesting. Particularly if Euron ends up there too in the books. Generally I just like the atmosphere of the little we got of Oldtown in AFFC. Hopefully the show captures that well enough. The Sam-Jorah stuff sounds good anyways. But I too hope Sam learns a good deal more than just that before leaving. And that they find a way to include Jim Broadbent in s8 as well, maybe as Dany's maester.

Jim Broadbent is great. His scenes will be good for sure. And Sam's scenes with Jorah. And I really liked the description of Sam and Gilly's scene from e1 about the WW. Maybe their best scene ever for me.
And I liked how Oldtown looked in those pictures we got.
And it's only 5 episode so I think it will be interesting to watch those scenes.

Don't get me wrong. I like every aspect of this show. I like that we got Dorne and the Iron Islands and Braavos and Meereen. There were scenes that I loved in every location.
I was just speaking from the plot perspective. But I'm glad that we have Oldtowm and the Citadel on the show. And that we will see Casterly Rock and High Garden.
