So konradsmith inspired me to make this poll on which year people consider the best. I've discussed it with him a few times and I've always been torn between 1999 and 2007. I just watched another really great movie from 2007, and I think I'm convinced at this point. I'm sticking with just movies made in my lifetime as there was obviously some really great years in the 70s and other era's. Vote for which year you think was better. I'm sure I missed some good movies from those years so mention them if you want. I'm also giving honorable mentions to 1994 & 1995. Notable films 1999: American Beauty Magnolia The Matrix Fight Club Eyes Wide Shut The Sixth Sense The Green Mile Office Space Being John Malcovich The Talented Mr. Ripley The Insider The Boondock Saints Notable films 2007: No Country For Old Men There Will Be Blood Zodiac The Assassination of Jesse James By the Coward Robert Ford Superbad Into the Wild Eastern Promises Gone Baby Gone Hot Fuzz 3:10 to Yuma American Gangster The Darjeeling Limited Michael Clayton

The Talented Mr. Ripley is like the best movie ever made, so that's an easy choice for me. Plus, I haven't seen a single one of the 2007 movies you mentioned ... holy shit.

1999 and it's not even close IMO. I'm not... a fan of several of those 2007 movies.

konradsmith, tbh, it was case closed to me when I looked at Nic's list and saw American Beauty, The Matrix, Fight Club and The Sixth Sense on it which are all among my favourite movies ever.

^Yeah, leading that 2007 with No Country for Old Men didn't help either... and now I'm out of here before Konrad and Nic kill me.

Magnolia, Office Space, Mr Ripley, Eyes Wide Shut and Office Space are all pretty damn good in my book. Great even. Most of all Office Space and Eyes Wide Shut. Those I could watch every day. But 2007. That was a year that made me realize what films could be. The Darjeeling Limited's even in my top ten list. And NCFOM is barely behind Barton Fink in my Coen's list. Jesse James in the same is barely behind Chopper for me as far as Andrew Dominik's brief filmography goes. The movies that came out that year made me realize beyond anything how great film could get. That might be generational. That might be because I was six in 99...but I feel that most of the great movies of 2007 weren't exactly topical. They were more timeless than many of those 99 films which feel somewhat saddled in that timeframe.

@kairos
I think you'd really like Into the Wild if you haven't already seen it.

Kairos replying with a gif from the great movie he hates has killed me. I now am a shell of a man. A husk. A mollusk.
