Yeah, the battle sequence is my favorite battle so far in the history of the show. "Blackwater" as a whole is a better episode, but purely in visual terms this right here is the winner.
In a matter of 10 or 15 minutes, this scene basically changed the show. For 7 years we've been yearning to see what a Targaryen invasion would look like, and this scene gives us the answer and then some--it looks fucking magnificent, but its magnificence is laced with horror. A relentless, glorious inferno, with the added wildness of the Dothraki charge giving the whole thing a visceral edge. But what was left afterwards were ashes. And it felt like the end of Westeros. At least as it is known to us.
There is a shot of a carriage on fire that could be the most beautiful image of the season if not the show. It summarizes everything in one fleeting second. Magical moment.
So yes, this scene is for the all-time books. The rest of the episode, maybe not as much, but it still packs strong content. The cave scene needed Podeswa's touch, but Dragonstone scenes remain strong.
The Winterfell storyline is showing its first cracks this episode, imo. You can feel the screenwriters behind every line, every scene. Why does Littlefinger grin all the fucking time? He's an idiot and they're taking it too far. The Sansa-Arya reunion was bizarrely self-conscious. Suddenly the Stark family is more dysfunctional than the Lannisters, which would be a nice twist if they pulled it off well.
Ultimately, the episode reaches true greatness in the end, which in this case, it's more than enough. Well done, Shakman.

So, the name Dick(on) being funny is a very modern viewpoint, but I guess from Bronn's laugh we're supposed to think it already has those connotations in Westeros. In which case, is Jaime just calling him the wrong name on purpose bc it's amusing every time the guy introduces himself?

I watched everything but the battle scene when it leaked and I'm glad I did lol. That was really an amazing thing to watch. Does it make me a bad person that I didn't really care very much for the Lannister soldiers? Sorry, but you're at war and also in my Queen's way. nope. i was thrilled and legit cheering lol

Oh my word, I've just seen someone call the 'chaos is a ladder' name drop an example of Bransplaining.

WOW what an episode. They do indeed keep getting better and better. On the roadAh, Bronn. How I’ve missed ye. You can tell they’ve been saving some of his best witty lines. That’s partially why I expected him to die this episode. King’s LandingI’ve already forgotten about this scene. WinterfellThese scenes were a rollercoaster of emotions. That Stark music as the camera pans around Winterfell ... Oh man that was nice to hear. Bran’s reaction to Meera saying goodbye was kinda what I expected when she said that. “You died in that cave” They’re really loving their S1 callbacks aren’t they? Arya at the gates with two guards – “this is my home” – was really obvious. Maybe it’s just my (partial) rewatch that has attuned my senses to this sort of thing. Also… is Arya still blind? “Doesn’t look like him” – That statue is the fucking spitting image of Sean Bean! She needs her eyes tested. Seeing the three Starks enter the courtyard together is so heartwarming, topped off with Pod’s “Catelyn Stark would be proud”. More tears Brienne is too hard on herself though. She didn’t do next to nothing to get the Starks back. She did marginally more than that. Arya training with Brienne made me imagine that's what it would've been like when Rodrick trained Rob and Jon. Really nice to see. DragonstoneEmilia was really good this episode. I may even say better than the first episode, and that’s tough to beat for me. Dany and Jon in the caves was also really good. Dany's one-on-one conversations with people are often her best. The Children on Dragonstone was not something I had expected at all, and I really loved seeing their patterns all over the walls. The idea that Sansa told Jon about Theon flew right over my head, so that scene didn’t go where I thought it would. I was expecting a punch in the face. Minor nitpick: I thought the Jonerys stuff was a little heavy-handed, but far from the point where it ruined the scenes. FIELD OF FIREBetter than KRAKENBOWL and, despite being significantly shorter, possibly better than Blackwater. The effects were astounding this episode. This easily, EASILY makes up for not a lot of action in CR and Highgarden last week. During that charge I thought of nothing but the Ride of the Rohirrim. Well, Ride of the Rohirrim + a giant dragon. There was a shot in this of some random guy on fire casually walking about who was immediately hit by a horse, and I don’t think I’ve ever laughed so loud while watching this show. Kinda ruined the moment of horror but whatever. This episode toyed with my poor heart. The second Jaime told Bronn to go to the scorpion, it sank. I thought: this is it. This is how Bronn dies. Roasted by a dragon. Or worse; killed by some random Dothraki. But no! He lives! In fact for a moment I thought he killed Drogon. And then when Jaime started charging and I thought he was a goner for sure. But no way is he dead. Maybe whoever rescued him (Bronn, yeah?) is, but Jaime can’t be. He has a prophecy to fulfil! Most importantly I don’t have to eat any socks because it looks like Jaime made it out alive. Otherwise his death would’ve been shown, right? RIGHT?Overall, incredible. Best episode of the season so far.

I thought of the Rohirrim as well. I know a lot of people despise the Dothraki, and rightly so when they were raping and enslaving folks (they don't do that shit under Dany though), but I've always really dug the horselords part of their culture. I liked Rohan better than Gondor in LotR too. I just love a good horse charge from warriors that specialize in such.

Weiss on Inside the Episode: "This is the first time we've ever had two sets of main characters on opposite sides of the battlefield, and it's impossible to really want any one of them to win, and impossible to want any one of them to lose."

Ikr? Even people that weren't big on Stannis were surely worried about Davos. I guess you could argue they weren't "main characters" but c'mon.

OMG, the animalistic part of me has always wanted to see Drogon and the Dothraki horde unleashed in full force, and I was not disappointed. The trembling earth and the war cry of the Dothraki screamers making the Lannister soldier quiver in fear before they even saw them on the horizon, and then Drogon making his presence known with a screech, and Jaime and Bronn wordless... I'm savage :Zdragonburnknight:

I need to calm down. Jesus, this episode was everything. I've got so much to say that I can't cover in one post, so I'll be posting it in chunks. Here are my first few obvervations/comments: - The Stark reunion was very awkward but in just the right way. There was still warmth and love, but all of them are not the same people they once were. I particularly loved the second hug between Arya and Sansa by the way. They are sisters and they do love each other. - Some people liked Brienne and Arya sparring, others thought it was meh. And I'm like: Shakman directed the shit out of that scene. The camera-work was brilliant here and the scene was generally very well choreographed as well. - Dany and Jon in the cave was such a nice scene. Kit and Emilia have great chemistry. - That battle slew me. I knew everything that was going to happen, and yet I felt the same excitement as when I first watched the Ride of the Rohirrim. - The score elevated the episode even further. Especially during the battle: going back and forth between Rains of Castamere and the Targaryen theme showcased how impossible it was to root for one side only. The score during the cave scene sounded exciting and the Stark theme during the reunion was beautiful.

Yeah, Stannis and Davos aren't really main characters but I'm quite sure everyone wanted Stannis to win, but also for Tyrion to survive.

Some of you discussed the meaning of the sparring scene and Sansa's reaction to it. I think katjushka, you asked that question? I think that was the moment when Sansa realised that Arya was totally serious about her "list". Sansa laughed it off in the crypts and then she was confused when Bran mentioned it again. Seeing Arya fight made her realise that Arya is totally capable of killing her enemies. That's when she realises that Arya must have gone through severe training, which makes her reconsider what Arya had told her about her list.

There was that moment where Jaime's about to get killed by a Dothraki and Dickon saves his ass with a sword through the back of the Dothraki. Another BotB comparison.
