I think that there has been a lot of subtle foreshadowing in both the books and show that this union is going to happen. Much like R+L=J, I think if it doesn't happen at this point, it would just be bad writing, and while he may be slow, GRRM is definitely a great writer. I don't think Dany will die in the end, I see Jon sacrificing himself in the end to save the realm, Dany lives on to rule possibly with Jon's son as the heir to the seven kingdoms.

I don't think Dany will die in the end, I see Jon sacrificing himself in the end to save the realm, Dany lives on to rule possibly with Jon's son as the heir to the seven kingdoms. The hints have been getting progressively more obvious, I think. In the last episode with Dany breaking up with Daario wondering about love and making herself available to marry again. Then we have Jon being named King in the North making him the most eligible bachelors in the Seven Kingdoms, I don't think they were being subtle anymore. If Dany doesn't die, than your suggestion above is probably the most likely outcome (barring both of them dying). I think it's bittersweet both because Jon dies but also because Dnay will get to be queen but it won't be the way she always imagined it to be. Change is so hard, and she who wanted to change the world will realize how truly hard that is.

I've said it since I first watched the shows and then read the books, Dany and Jon are headed for a unions. Their parallels in both the books and the show have just continue to grow and this episode gave us some serious foreshadowing of a political marriage. As we see Dany letting go of Daario, he pointedly asked her who she would marry, she said she didn't know but needed to stay available for a political alliance. Then we cut to Jon being named King in the North, I.e. A perfect political alliance. Now, I know some of you might get caught up in the coodies but let's remember that the Targaryen's don't care about marrying families and the Starks have more than a couple of Uncle and Niece marriages in their past. A marriage between and aunt and a nephew wouldn't be out of the question even in our medieval times. My take is that the political marriage takes place before they find out. Once they find out there will be conflict but I think that will be resolved. However, I'm not sure if either will survive the series, we'll have to see about that. Feels good to be right and to have read the signs correctly.

Feels good to be right and to have read the signs correctly. I think the signs were always there and though GRRM is subtle at times, it's mostly easy to find if you're actually looking for it. That's the thing though, most fans seem strenuously NOT looking for it or scrambling for some other explanation. In my first reply to this post, I said the problem is the romance seems contrived or too fairy-tale like, which seems to turn a lot of people off. But we don't know how the ending goes and for all we know it's more Romeo and Juliet style than it is Fairytale boy meets girl instant love. They may both die, or one or the other dies in sacrifice to the other. I highly doubt it's going to be Jon/Dany riding off into the sunset together to live happily ever after. Maybe that's why I've resisted the romance for so long. I'm afraid to be happy for them!

Personally I have fought against the inevitable because I love both characters but fear to lose either. I sense the end game will bring at least one if not both of their deaths. And if they leave a child with no parents, just as they both were raised, I think might be more than my poor heart can take. GRRM has taken fiendish delight in wringing the emotions of his readers at every twist of his pen. Another Targaryen alone in the world is a sadness I don't know if I can bear, even if everything works out to the good.

At my blog I wrote a post on the idea of GRRM's bittersweet ending, so I'll post it here because it's relevant to this discussion:
