I didn't realise we were doing this so didn't get a chance to vote. I'd love to take part, but I'm just starting Lord of the Rings so won't be able to get to this for a few weeks.

Okay, so I think we'll leave the discussion thread locked until 9/23/17 which is the deadline to read the book. Those who can read it by then can join the discussion afterwards. I suggest for those of you who finish the book ahead of schedule you can think about the questions I added to the thread to help focus your thoughts about the books.
We can keep to the two-week schedule for the next two books. So Book 2 will be discussed on October 7th and Book 3 will be discussed on October 21st.
You should be able to create threads in this sub-forum so if you want to discussed something outside the general discussion thread you can do that as well.
How does that sound? If you have any suggestions about the discussion and whatnot, let me know. Like I said I've never done a book club before.

Great! I'm already downloading the books. I'll start when others are prepared, too. I'm really curious how it turns out. Aside of starting a promising new story, it should be interesting to compare how we react on different characters in different settings. I have noticed that some fans with whom I agree on things in regards to ASoIaF have a diametrally different opinion about characters and story of Harry Potter, for example. I actually ordered it two days ago because I figured even if it didn't win I'd still like to read it. It should be arriving today. I'm very excited about it as well, I don't know much about the author or the series other than the excerpt I provided. It certainly will be interesting to see how we all react to it. I think most of us are going pretty blind into it, so it's a new experience for all of us. I can absolutely recommend the Broken Earth trilogy which I voted for. (Voted for it as I was hoping to discuss it, but never mind) That is her most recent work and she has won a Hugo for both he first and second instalment. She could well win a third next year for the excellent conclusion. It's so uniquely written and has very well thought out world building and fascinating characters, as well as plenty of mysteries and twists to keep the reader guessing. I'll be happy to read her other works though, and will join the discussion when I can. In the middle of another book at the moment and my schedule is a bit busy but I will probably be working to the same kind of time frame as dje said below Yes, I will definitely pick this up, it may be a few weeks though, real busy time of year for me.

I too will take a bit longer to read, partly because I don't get that much reading time, but mostly because I impulsively decided to order an actual copy of the book and these things can take a while to wing their way down under :/. But I'll try!

I've heard about it being quite popular, but I have next to no idea of what the plot is or what the characters are like - except for the short description at the top of this page, that is. I hate finding out more about things I am about to start beforehand. It's either going to spoil it for me or I may not even read it because I wrongly assume that it's not going to be to my taste. I've lost interest in books and movies this way, only to randomly come across them a couple of years later to find out I've been a fool. May I ask where will we discuss it? In Literature forum? Or will there be an extra subforum? We'll be discussing it in this forum, which I created for the purposes of group discussion for specific books. Book Club. Here is the thread for the first book: housewiththereddoor.freeforums.net/thread/546/inheritance-triology-book-1-discussionI'm funny I don't mind having a book spoiled, not too much though. Like, I can read the ending before hand and then go and read the book. But I wouldn't want to know what happens between the start of the book and the ending. I know, it's weird. There was a book I picked up last year and was about a quarter of the way through it and decided to read the ending because I became suspicious that I had already figured out the plot. So, I went ahead and read it and I was right. I was so angry that the author was that sloppy that I stopped reading the book right then and there. Awesome! I'll start reading it tomorrow. About not having problems knowing the ending but not knowing the journey to the end, I am the same so I don't find it weird at all. I'm much more interested in the narrative journey and characters development so knowing how it ends it's a bonus for me. Which is why ASOIAF drives me crazy ... I must know how it ends. Season 8 spoilers cannot be out to soon!

I'm the same too - I'm in a book club with friends and they all think reading the end of a book before you finish is some sort of heresy...but I do it all the time, and have for years. I sometimes think it's a symptom of an anxious personality - it gets too stressful reading some bits and worrying about what's going to happen, whereas once I know the broad strokes of the ending, I can just enjoy the rest of the plot without the stress. And as you pointed out moiaf, it also saves time if you are reading a book with a terrible ending, you can just give up on it there and then.

I don't need to know the ride, knowing the destination just helps. It's like this season of GoT, I knew too much of the ride and I wish I didn't but had I know the destination I would have been just thrilled.

That is true, it absolutely is the symptom of an anxious personality. It can't be helped though, not knowing lessen my enjoyment of the story, it smears it with anxiety. For that very reason I hate cliffhangers. Give me a finished product!
