I’m giving the episode a 7.
There was some good scenes and some not so great scenes. I thought the premiere for season 7 was much better.

I gave it a 7, too. Thought several of the scenes could definitely have been better, that they weren't really that logical, considering, BUT ... I realize they had lots and lots of major stuff to cram into one episode. Perhaps I was expecting a little too much?

Need to rewatch, but initial reaction I’d say an 8. Solid episode, but not perfect.
Glad it’s back though. I’ve missed the fuck out of this show.

Solid 8. I'm on my second watch now. It was a great set up episode that covered a lot of ground. I appreciate that.

Need to rewatch, but initial reaction I’d say an 8. Solid episode, but not perfect. Glad it’s back though. I’ve missed the fuck out of this show. I gave it an 8 as well, and that's not my usual exuberance as I'm still processing this rollercoaster ride of an opener. It wasn't perfect but it had a lot of beautiful and also funny/wonderful moments so I was really glad to have it. There's just a lot to digest and I'm still not sure how I feel about some of the smaller plot points that confused me as to what the character's motivations are about. I guess we'll find out!

I've seen it twice on tv now with family but I'll have to watch it on my computer with my headphones on to determine whether it's an eight or a nine. But it's up there. A very solid opener that benefited from having fewer locations to introduce. I might be in a minority with this but the Cersei-Euron stuff was the best part of the episode imho. They're both much more dangerous than the other one knows. The question is which of the two of them blinks first.

Lots of clearing things up from last season, but all very predictable and very short, without time to develop characters attitudes. We had repeatedly been promised '6 action movies' for the last two years or so. That was 50mins only. Just when Jamie arrived and saw Bran I thought 'this might be about to get interesting for the next 20 mins/half hour' and it all stopped. The Jon/Sansa bickering seemed as contrived as the Sansa/Arya setup last season. I thought the Yara rescue scene was barely there, a real damp squib. With 3 extra mins they could have upped the silent tension. Sam's hurt was the best bit for me that dialogue was enough when someone can convey everything without speaking. I hope they start some proper battle action next and we start getting what we were promised.
6 ... but promising for next time.

8.
Few good scenes, but really nothing memorable.

Very good start but it had its flaws to be perfect.

A 9. I found the Sam+Dany scene followed by the big Jon reveal to be even more powerful on rewatch (and the scenes complement each other). Many notions being challenged here... identity, honor (once again), leadership. This makes the Jon/Sam relationship richer than it ever was imo. Things at Castle Black were never this interesting.
It's also the heart of the episode as many other things are being turned upside down as well.
Dragonriding is the only clunky scene but I get why it's there. It's a dark season and this scene gave some levity to the episode.

Your post reminds me that along with identity, honor, and leadership, it's also about the specific identity of family. And that also brings out for me just how much of this E1 is about family, both blood family and other 'family' sorts of ties, e.g., with Arya and Sandor ... and even with Sam/Jon/brothers via Nightswatch but also by sense of kindred.

Oh, definitely. Also Yara/Theon, and surprisingly, Sam. Oddly enough Theon may be the most "evolved" character in this sense since he has no choice but to look beyond family. At this point, he knows he'll never fully be a Greyjoy or a Stark. And obviously that's still a source of anguish but it also means he gets a different perspective on things.
