A divisive episode. Well, GOT's supposed to be divisive. I'm enjoying reading both sides of the argument here.
I, like most fans, wanted to see Westeros engulfed in deep winter and mothers with their starving children and all those things Old Nan talked about. In fact I was absolutely sure the Night King wouldn't die this episode.
But he did, and the episode was mostly extraordinary. So maybe this isn't the kind of story we thought it was. I always thought we wouldn't know what the story truly is about until the finale. I still don't know and that's just how I like it. In fact, I've never had less of a clue.

I'm enjoying reading both sides of the argument here I agree with both sides, because I also had this dilemma what is the best for the story. But I like the episode. We will see what happens in the next 3.

I didn't expect the Night King would die in this ep. Then we were 2 mins from the end and everything was so desperate that it was clear all of them would die unless something happened. I love that it was Arya who did it, and I love the way it happened. I went from "Yes!" to "OH shit" to "OMFG YAAAS" in a matter of seconds.
I gave the episode an 8. I loved Theon's scenes, Sansa and Tyrion's scenes (so much!), and Lyanna dying like a badass. Seeing the Dothraki lit arakhs extinguished was so chilling. Didn't like how dark the whole episode was; I could hardly see a thing most of the time.

It's difficult for me to put into words how much I liked this episode (and the season so far). I don't want to comment too much on all the details, maybe I'll do that later after a rewatch, but that central scene towards the end was exactly how I imagined the NK to go down. Visually, it looked like straight out of a (very beautiful) nightmare and the music was perfect. As some of you know, I have been saying for years that Arya would be the one to do it. It made so much sense for so many reasons. I literally forgot to breathe while watching that moment. 10/10

Looking at ratings, and general reactions around the web, this might be the most divisive episode since The Dance of Dragons.

That's what happens you build up an unstoppable threat and then kill them off suddenly at mid-season with seemingly very little story left to tell.
Also, people are genuinely pissed that more major characters didn't die in that battle because the expectations were built up that this was going to be the case (and these expectations were not unreasonable, the show basically gave a 2 episode send off to everyone that closed off a whole bunch of arcs prior so they have themselves to blame for those expectations being set).
As I said, they better have something a whole lot better than "let's go deal with Cersei" as the end of this thing because that is an extremely shitty final season if that's where they're going. I feel like they must have something still to pull out here because this can't be how they construct the end of the story, it just can't. But until we get a big story turn, the feelings on this ep are going to lean towards "disappointing".

It's weird - Twitter seems to absolutely love this episode, while Reddit seems to hate it (although the GoT reddit is more positive based on the posts upvoted, as most of the negativity seems to be in the comments). They weren't kidding when they said this season will be divisive. I can only imagine the ending being even more controversial.
