It was good, and it was what I expected.
KH let slip a huge hint about what was coming by calling these upcoming episodes Shakespearean and it really is. There's intrigue, royal drama and the timeless question of what makes legitimacy?
Dany is faced with a huge crisis. She's lost many resources, two of her three dragons and people do not love her they tolerate her and mainly because of the credibility Jon.. Aegon has lent her. She knows all of this so she is desperate for a quick victory before the truth catches up with her.
What a great ride. Look at it for what it is, and don't wish it was something else and it's pretty gripping.

Decent episode by itself, but I don't like what it's building up for.

I'll have to do some rewatching before I can rate this one and also decide how I'm rating it. I didn't like a lot of the events of the episode but it was beautiful and it made me feel so hard for some characters that it can't be all bad.

If you had asked me before the episode if I wanted to see the kindest, sweetest, and most beautiful woman on the show brutally beheaded in front of her Queen and her lover in an act of violence that guarantees that thousands will die and Daenerys is likely to embrace the full meaning of Fire and Blood to the ruin of all ... I would have said FUCK NO. Don't do that. Give me anything *but* that. But that doesn't mean it's not a fair direction to take this story. This is a textbook example of why reading one-sentence leaks from petulant pissants on Reddit isn't a substitute for watching the actual episode. Because seeing how this all unfolded ... it makes sense to me. It's tragic, it's gutwrenching, it's not what I *wanted* to happen at all. But you know what else I didn't want?
For Robb Stark and his pregnant wife to be butchered. For Oberyn Martell to get his skull crushed. For Shireen Baratheon to burn on the orders of her parents, dying screaming and alone. Name a thousand other examples. It's crushing ... and yet, I'm still here. Because that's the story I signed up for, and when I look back at the road that led us here, it all makes sense in retrospect ... at least to me. Your mileage may vary, but for me, the groundwork was laid ... we just didn't want to see it. If you're blindsided by this, then there's a rather famous quote that I'd like to refer you to, one that people have cited in jest many times but never really seemed to grasp the full implications of until now: "If you think this has a happy ending, you haven't been paying attention." This is what Game of Thrones does. There are some people out there who claim they want to be shocked, that they want the show to be ruthless and "real" ... but really, they just want their own headcanon validated. Well, burn the theories. GOT isn't here for that shit.

I'm going with a nine for now too. Once I do a headphone rewatch I might lower it to an eight. I doubt I'll raise it though. It opened and closed very strongly. I thought the party scene went for a bit long, though I get why they wanted the levity because the rest of the episode was thick with dread. Somehow despite all of the catharsis of 803 all we need are these problems between Jon and Dany and my guts are in knots again. So everything became as tense and foreboding as the end of 802, right up until Rhaegal fell and then it grew thicker still. Then Missandei, among the most wholesome characters in the show is struck down and we end with that look on Dany's face...what comes next will be something. Which is why I'm saving my tens for later.

I usually go with my gut instinct on these in-between episodes but this time. Nope. I can't even. I'm going to do a solo re-watch tomorrow when I am calmed the hell down and thinking more clearly.

Along with everyone else, I just can't vote now. I can't separate my angst at events from an objective assessment of the episode in and of itself. I don't have it in me just now to do the 'quote' mechanics, but kudos to jared and konradsmith for their great posts above. You put into words what most of us are probably feeling.

It's the easiest 10 this season alongside "A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms".

10. Well, 9.5 really, because I wasn't pleased to see how Ghost was sidelined and Jon didn't even touch him or talk to him.
This is the kind of episode I enjoy a lot. I don't consider it an in-between episode; this is the story. I loved all the interactions after the battle, I loved seeing the intrigue re: the ruling of 7 Kingdoms, I cried seeing Missandei die and I almost fell off my seat from shock when Rhaegal was shot.

On my rewatch and the party scenes really aren't dragging like they seemed to initially. Doesn't mean I'll up my number but it brightens up my view of what I thought was one of the episode's weaker spots. We'll see how I feel by the end of this...

Doesn't mean I'll up my number but it brightens up my view of what I thought was one of the episode's weaker spots. We'll see how I feel by the end of this... I too was surprised by the length of the feast scenes but I loved them. It made sense for these people to feel more alive than ever after literally facing hell on earth (seeing characters such as Brienne as we'd never seen them before). They're rediscovering life, but at the same time the writers reintroduce the intrigue and the plotting to come in a seamless way. The writing this episode was pretty masterly imo. Maybe the scene with Jon, Bran, Sansa, Arya was slightly more forced than the others but it didn't bother me much.. I can't think of anything that seems out of character. And then the episode just builds from there to become more and more complicated and great.
