Wow, straight to series. They must be pretty confidant in this one. Because it'll be expensive.

This show will be expensive as hell. Meaning all the GOT eggs will be in this one very expensive dragon basket. Based around a family whose most prominent member was turned into dragon Hitler the last two episodes of the final season. In a world where prequels are never as successful as the OG. If it fails it's bye bye GOT for HBO.

They should just transfer Naomi Watts into this one.
The biggest downside here is how much time it will take up on GrrM's schedule.

Since D&D haters blamed them for Bloodmoon being "killed", I guess we can now expect they will thank them for this show and for the fact that the man they brought into GoT family will serve as showrunner?

my interesting in asoiaf randomly came back to me, so i wanted to check in on how this was coming along. apparently they've had casting calls out since january these 3 never much interested me tbh, but it's cool there's some inclination of how this series is gonna go. open with the conquest, flash forward to the dance, and then who knows?

I'm not sure about those casting calls. The series is still being written so I don't think they're there yet. Incidentally Bryan Cogman seems to have confirmed on twitter that this is the new incarnation of HBO's Dance of the Dragons adaptation but maybe it will still cover earlier events too.

Dance of Dragons makes the most sense. Having anthology series with new characters and periods every season like a lot of fans suggested would be really stupid because there wouldn't be any emotional connection with the characters and the story.
People need to care about new cast and whats going to happen to them.
If they use only book material as outline I can imagine 3 seasons. But if Condal and Sapochnik expand the story and add more things I would see this show having 4 or 5 seasons.
And I would be shocked if this isn't "new season every two years" type of show.

They'll have to expand it a great deal beyond the Fire and Blood material. If they do so deftly I could see them stretching it to to four or even five seasons if they flesh it out cleverly enough. But they'd have to start with a pretty uneventful s1 to do so. And the story, at least as GrrM wrote it, will cover a far greater passage of time than GoT, so they'll either have to find a way to sell that effectively onscreen with title cards stating as much and constant recasting of the younger characters OR to try and age them up enough so that the story will still fly within a potentially shorter timespan. The pre-production's gone on long enough and with enough writers on hand though that I'm sure they've figured out one angle another to handle the Dance/Death of the Dragons already. With the right cast and budget it could make for a pretty compelling show. With an already developed and concrete beginning and end defined for them from the outset too. The creativity will come with developing and expanding these effectively. And with what from the Fire and Blood material they end up cutting as well. Depending on how well it does, some of the shelved or delayed spinoffs may still be commissioned in the next decade or so. I don't think they've fully given up on any of the concepts. There's still money in the brand and they know that. HBO will never be able to recreate the phenomenon of GoT's popularity; tv is too fragmented a medium now. There are too many networks, too many shows. But they don't need even half of Thrones' viewership to justify the budget of such a show. And they have an edge on Amazon and Netflix's manifold efforts to start their own fantasy rivals to GoT. They know the working formula better, have the production infrastructure intact and still have GrrM's active cooperation in their effort. That gives them a pretty active headstart, no matter how hard the other networks work at it.

When it comes to timeline things can get condensed. The Lord of the Rings movies did that at the beginning. So things that happened over 10 years can happen in one.
When it comes to success of the show I am optimistic. If first Fantastic Beasts movie was able to earn 80% of what average HP box office result was I see no reason why this show couldn't do the same.
It will have all these iconic places and elements like Iron Throne, Red Keep, Dragonstone, dragons,... It will be more TV friendly than GoT I think. It will focus on just one war and on family drama of one house.
