Earlier I was looking up some behind-the-scenes stuff and listening to the Force theme and at some point, I just lost it and I started sobbing uncontrollably. Never before has a celebrity death hit me this hard. Carrie Fisher was more than just a celebrity to me. and I think she was more than that for a lot of people. My dad is a huge Star Wars fan, so I grew up watching Star Wars on VHS over and over, Star Wars was such a big part of my childhood, and Leia was always my favourite character. And when I grew up, I adored Carrie Fisher, not just as an actress, but as a writer as well, her sharp wit and wicked sense of humour.
I don't know what to say. I'm really going to miss her. And I can't imagine what a harrowing experience watching Star Wars will be, knowing that Princess Leia is gone.
Fuck.

I'm going to out my age quite a bit here but I was a wee girl of 7 when the very first Star Wars came out in the theaters. My Uncle, the cool guy, took me and his son (my bestie cousin) to see it in the theater the week school let out for the summer. We watched the movie with open mouths and wide eyes, not moving or even eating our popcorn that entire two hours. We were in awe. No movie had ever been so epic or had special effects like that! I can't even begin to explain how much that movie changed my life from that moment on. This sounds incredibly geeky but it really did. I spent that entire summer (and many to come) acting out numerous Star Wars pretend stories with the neighborhood kids. Being the only girl (and a bossy one), I was almost always Princess Leia. But she was a COOL Princess, not the prissy girly kind. She didn't take anybody's shit - not even Darth Vader's! I loved being Princess Leia and getting to fight with a blaster and tell everyone what to do and even rebuff the advances of Han Solo! Carrie Fisher's portrayal of Princess Leia created something new for little girls like me (The Arya Tomboy types) growing up in the 70s and 80s... that feminism could be tough and acceptable and that women could fight alongside the guys. She was an inspiration to me, a tough girl growing up in the barbie era who hated pink and hated dresses. I wanted to be Princess Leia! I am very sad she has died far too young and that her family has to endure this at the holidays. An entire generation grew up with her and the movies and she will be sadly missed by mine and many generations to come.

Growing up queer, I've always found it easier to identify with female characters, especially at a younger age. I was never tough, but I could identify with Leia, because as badass and capable as she was, she was also thoroughly feminine. That's what I love most about her character and what really appealed to me as a child. Of course I also loved the Disney princesses with their pretty dresses, but Leia was special. And Carrie Fisher was an angel.

I think I'm now able to make a few coherent sentences.
My dad's a big fan of Star Wars, and that's something he passed on to me at an early age. I've seen the movies more times than I can count. More times than I have fingers and toes, that's for sure.
For me, Alec Guinness was my favourite in the original. But he died when I was really young so I never really felt as much of an emotional connection to him. Carrie, though, she was something else. Something special. More than just one character. Always a huge personality. In any interview I've seen, she's always fun, outgoing, engaging, and incredibly witty. I'm happy for her that she went out doing something; promoting her new book. Going out while she's out enjoying the world instead of being cooped up in some old house somewhere.
What makes me feel worse is that I never felt this way towards Kenny Baker when he passed earlier this year. I can't really explain it, but I don't think it's as simple as "oh well I've seen Carrie onscreen in person but not Kenny!" Maybe it's just because she'd already survived so much that she seemed invincible.
It's one of those things where I can't imagine someone not being in the world because they've always been such a big part of my world. Carrie was that. She seemed invincible. Like she could never die because nobody ever wanted her to leave.
I think it'll be a while before I can rewatch a Star Wars movie again. It just won't be the same without her.

This afternoon I bought the audio book as well as the hardcover version of Carrie Fisher's latest (and last) novel The Princess Diarist. It took me a few hours to find it, I went to three different book stores throughout town. They all had small selections of English audio books, but only one of them had The Princess Diarist. I'm really glad, because otherwise I would have ordered it on Amazon, but it would have taken several weeks to get here.
It's really good, I listened to it for a bit (the whole audio book is about five hours long). It's narrated by Fisher herself and her daughter Billie Lourd. It feels surreal and it's painful, but it's a fun book and a great insight into her life and mindset, as well as some Star Wars related behind-the-scenes stuff. I love her sense of humour.
I can't wait to get back home so I can listen to the rest of it. I need some alone time for that, and I can't really get that while I'm staying at my parent's house.
