I'm torn between a 5 or a 6. This episode told us a lot about various characters and their motives but it was also way too soap opera-y. I'm sure I didn't feel this way when I first watched it, but after watching it now, it was kind of bad.

A decent episode, but really not on par with the better episodes this season. I gave it a 7, I didn't think it was bad it just that it didn't flow as well as it could have and some of the dialogue was awkward.

I gave this episode a 7 and consider it to be the weakest episode of S1. There were still some great scenes such as: Arya and Ned talking about Needle and then Cat and Ned saying goodbye, even Tyrion speaking with Jeor Mormont. I know it's just setting the pieces up, but there's not a whole lot that stands out here. I did also like Arya's strong motivation to want to kill Joffrey though.

8. Solid episode overall. Nice introduction to some great characters like Varys, Barristan, Ser Alliser, Yoren and Syrio. Jon gets humbled a bit by Tyrion and Benjen. Seeing Viserys get put in his place is the Essos version of Tyrion slapping Joffrey. It's not as good as most of the other S1 episodes, but still very enjoyable.

A 7 from me.
I was going to go a point lower, but remembering some great introductions in this episode made me decide it wasn't as bad as I thought.
We met:
Syrio - top marks for the great choreography with Arya, the music, Ned's look of fear watching them. Dark foreshadowing in this even as sunny and positive as the scene was. Ser Barristan - such a dapper old knight... love him to bits and the recalling of first deaths scene was so horribly awkward with Robert and shitty "Lancel" back in his ugly hair days. Pycelle - playing up the aged decrepitude thing was cheesy but more noticeable now that I know it was all fake. Renly - adorable. Such a lovely boy, died way before his time. Littlefinger - please bring back your accent/voice from this era. wtf dude you were great. Old Nan - awesome casting and foreshadowing of winter tale I'd completely forgotten Yoren - love this guy, perfect rough-around-the-edges but good hearted and funny. Varys - perfect from the moment he opens his mouth. I don't think he's ever had a sub par scene the entire season. Conleth just nails the part.
Points get docked for the somewhat plodding pace that bogged down with overdone dialogue. I think I get it that they were going for an over-the-top sort of feel to the capital after we'd just seen how simple and rugged the Northerners are but some of it left me feeling like "get on with it already."
I actually liked that battle discussion Cersei had with Joffrey where the shit has no clue how to politically deal with the north. Cersei obviously knew something back then about being a King/Queen and how to deal with stubborn followers ... her Father's child for sure, but she constantly lets her impulsive emotions get in the way of that calculated brilliance. Too bad really, but here we are, six seasons later and she's on the throne. Oh the irony.
Best scenes were Arya with Ned, Arya with Syrio, Tyrion with pretty much everyone at the wall, especially Yoren and Jon.

It's an 8 from me. I think it gets a little too much heat personally but I admit the episode doesn't really flow very well and feels like it goes on forever. There's also not much that particularly standa out but I still think it's a pretty solid episode.

7 out of 8
The episode plods a little but the high points almost over the slow. A good episode for settling us in for the long haul: this is how days go at the Wall, this is life in Westeros, the pieces are moving around the chess board, but the game is still in the early stages.

I gave this one an 8, the show moved at a much slower pace back in the beginning, which I love because I feel that this was the best adapted season. My favorite scene was definitely Ned discovering Needle, and Stick them with the pointy end. I loved the introduction of the small council, Jon and Tyrion's scenes were phenomenal, a really good third episode.

I'm way behind here but I got around to this one. I'll do 104 soonish hopefully.
8/10. There are some very strong scenes but there's way too many character introductions, especially for people just starting the show and unfamiliar with the books. That could've been handled better by going a bit slower with it all. That's not to say that some shows can't pull off introducing like twelve or so characters in one episode effectively...but in this case it didn't make for the best pacing. Still what it did right it did well enough to warrant a high rating. The stuff at the Wall, particularly Tyrion's scenes with Benjen and Yoren and then his scene with Aemon and Jeor, were very good and set up a lot that we won't see Tyrion think much about again until s7. Also the Jaime-Ned throne moment in the throne room is always a fun one to rewatch after the Brienne-Jaime tub confession, now that we know how much Ned judging him when he found him in that throne room the first time around effected him.
Other than that I don't have much to note about it other than an obligatory 2010 Emilia shoutout and my annoyance that Tyrion didn't at least rub his hands in some snow after pissing before shaking Jon's hand. If I was Jon I'd have kicked him off of the Wall for that shit. Though it is funny that Tyrion then pissed off of the Long Bridge of Volantis in an identically-framed shot in ep. 503. If he'd pissed off the Pyramid of Meereen's balcony I believe that'd been three of the Wonders Made by Man. That's something I'd have liked to see in s5 or s6.

I never thought about the parallels of Tyrion pissing off the edge of those man-made wonders - great catch konradsmith. I enjoyed Tyrion's arrogance and cynicism back in those days because we can actually see how much he has changed since then. I'm late doing re-watch for 1x04 myself so don't worry if you're behind - keep watching, I really enjoy your write-ups on them.
