This is one of those episodes I don't tend to watch if I don't have to. I call it the Fall Out Episode.
We see the opening of Joffrey's reign and the cruelty it will bring. The murder of the bastards of Robert was cruel, and heartbreaking. So glad to see Gendry headed north away from Joffrey and his madness. That was the first moment I realized he wasn't just a spoiled brat but a seriously mental piece of work. And of course Cersei was more than happy to throw someone under the bus to get her beloved son's attention away from her and onto someone else.
Dany's trials in the Red Lands seem a refining of the steel she was forged into during the birth of her dragons. She will end up finer, purer for the ordeal with a better understanding of herself.
While it was a good episode, it wasn't a great one.

For a season opener, this was one of the weakest. It's unfortunate too because there were some pretty big reveals and moments in this episode that I think a lot of people quickly forgot due to the boring bits.
I've got more to say but have to run right now.
One curious thing I want to ask everyone who is re-watching (or those just lurking): Did you remember that the small council was presented with a white raven in that scene just before Tyrion arrives? I totally forgot that and found it very odd. If the Citadel sent out a white raven way back then (years before season 6 timeline) to announce Winter is over, why wasn't that emphasized more everywhere else? It seems it was promptly forgotten. I guess it was more of "Summer has ended, Fall is here" or something but seems like an inconsistency in the timeline.

Bit of a wtf moment after all these years. I wonder if that was put in before they knew they'd be doing as many as 8 seasons? I know one of the D's said he felt like as long as they made it to the RW they would feel like hey accomplished something. With HBO's history of cancelling shows on their prime (Deadwood, Rome) I'm sure there was uncertainty in those early days. Idk, it just seems so early to include that scene.

It was about summer ending and autumn beginning. The 610 raven was sent because autumn was ending and winter was beginning. That happens in the books too.

Yeah I figured that was the case but it's still odd that the small council is the only one who had any knowledge of it way back in Season 2 and it was never mentioned again. Seems a missed opportunity or too early or maybe I'm nitpicking.

Pleased to meetcha Mel. I already knew Carice from Zwartboek so I was happy to hear she was cast back in the summer of 2011. People had been talking about Monica Bellucci potentially playing the part and she'd have nailed it too. But those who were disappointed in her casting have eaten their words by now. They needed an ethereal bombshell for the part. And they sure got that.

Worse than bad pussy? Or the cousin Orson story? Oh yes. By miles. And I like the Cousin Orson scene. Possibly my least favorite scene of the entire series. And if the rumour is true that D&D put it in there to take a shot at a writer that was critical of GoT that makes it even worse. Along with the dissapointing fight between Oberyn and the Mountain that's certainly not a great episode for me.

IIRC GrrM has more of a bone to pick with that author than D and D.

Yea, this was kind of a weak opener... but there were some bright spots, we're introduced to Stannis, Ser Davos, and Melissandre. Not a great episode, but not a bad one either

I guess we're all kind of meh about thi episode. It sort of sets the stage for the season really,, it's to me the weakest of all season by a lot. There are a few bright spots here and there but it's not that great of a season. Envie I totally had forgotten about the raven, as well. I'd actually forgotten about most of the episode. I mean I remembered once I saw it but there were few remarkable things that happen which sucks because it was a premier episode.

Along with the dissapointing fight between Oberyn and the Mountain that's certainly not a great episode for me.I think the strongest scenes in that episode were in The Vale and then there's Nathalie. As for 2x01, I think King's Landing is probably the most compelling here and then goes on to be the strongest storyline of S2 imo. There's also a lot of dialogue particularly between Tyrion and Cersei throughout the season that adds an interesting depth to their relationship. For two characters that despise each other, the way Peter and Lena work off of each other is incredible. I also thought the introduction to Team Dragonstone was good too, but its placement in the episode felt odd.
