I know it seems early to open this thread but some info has came up about the contenders. Of last year's contenders only GOT and This is Us are confirmed to return for this Emmy season:
So what this means for each category:
Series: Aside from GOT and TIU, Better Call Saul which missed the Emmy deadline last season due to its fourth season premiering in August will be eligible this year. Homeland which was eligible for its seventh season last year but wasn't nominated will miss the deadline as its eighth season will premiere in late 2019. Mr. Robot was eligible last season but wasn't nominated and its fourth and last season still doesn't have a premiere date. Orange is the New Black was eligible last season for its fifth season but was completely shut down and is eligible this season for its sixth season. These are all the still-airing previous nominees in this category and with 3 or 4 slots opened we are due to new blood.
Lead Actor: Incumbent winner Matthew Rhys is done as The Americans aired its last season for the Emmys. TIU's leads Sterling K. Brown and Milo Ventimiglia are eligible for its third season. Westworld's Ed Harris and Jeffrey Wright are sitting this season out and Ozark's Jason Bateman is elegible for its second season. BCS's Bob Odenkirk who was ineligible last season returns for season 4. Liev Schreiber who was eligible but wasn't nominated for Ray Donovan's fifth season is back with season 6. Emmy-winner Rami Malek is a question mark as he was eligible but unnominated last season and Mr. Robot last season has no premiere date. These are all the still-airing previous nominees. With 3 slots free Kit Harington has a great chance of being nominated this season.
Lead Actress: Incumbent winner Claire Foy is done as she is being replaced for The Crown's third season. Orphan Black's Tatiana Maslany and The Americans' Keri Russell are done as their shows aired their last season. THT's Elisabeth Moss is skipping this Emmy season as season 3 premieres after the deadline and WW's Evan Rachel Wood is also sitting this one out. Only Killing Eve's Sandra Oh will return as the second season premieres in April. Previous nominees with still-airing shows are House of Cards' Robin Wright for its season 6 who was ineligible last season, How to Get Away with Murder's Viola Davis for its fifth season who was eligible last season but was unnominated, Empire's Taraji P. Henson who was eligible last season but unnominated for its season 5 and Homeland's Claire Danes who was eligible last season but unnominated and will skip this season too. This category will have the most renovation and Emilia has a good chance of being nominated.
Supporting Actor: GOT's incumbet winner Peter Dinklage and Nicolaj Coster-Waldau are returning. Homeland's Mandy Patinkin, Stranger Things' David Harbour and THT's Joseph Fiennes are sitting this one down. And The Crown's Matt Smith is being replaced for season 3.
Previous nominees in still-airing show are BCS's Jonathan Banks who was ineligible last year but is eligible this year for season 4 and Ray Donovan's Jon Voight who was eligible last season but unnominated and is eligible for season 6. That means that 3 slots exist to be filled. Maybe Alfie Allen will finally get nominated.
Supporting Actress: Incumbent winner Thandie Newton is sitting this season out. THT's Ann Dowd, Alexis Bledel and Yvonne Strahovski and Stranger Things' Millie Bobby Brown are also skipping this season. The Crown's Vanessa Kirby is being replaced for season 3. GOT's Lena Headey is the only one returning for this Emmy season. Previous nominees Uzo Aduba, Chrissy Metz and Constance Zimmer were all eligible last season but unnominated. Maisie Williams skipped last season and alongside the other three is eligible this season. This category will have just as much renovation as lead actress with 5 slots opened.
So, thought?
- The Americans had its season finale last season.
- The Handmaid’s Tale will have its season 3 premiere in June missing the deadline.
- Stranger Things will have its season 3 premiere in July missing the deadline.
- Westworld's season 3 hasn't even began production yet.
- The Crown is a question mark. It missed its usual November release date last year and season 3 and 4 are being shot back-to-back so it can miss the dealine.
