Apparently Erdogan's requesting asylum in Germany. Which is laughable since he was only recently trying to have a German comedian sued for writing a song parody about him. Basically impugning German freedom of speech. I imagine if he ends up fleeing there, he won't get a warm welcome.

^ I don't know who are the 'good guys' and the 'bad guys' in all this, but I think its telling that while other governments and groups are urging the Turkish people to stay in their homes, stay safe, Erdogan got on Skype and urged Turks to take to the streets.

^ I don't know who are the 'good guys' and the 'bad guys' in all this, but I think its telling that while other governments and groups are urging the Turkish people to stay in their homes, stay safe, Erdogan got on Skype and urged Turks to take to the streets. Erdogan's been working his damnedest to get the last vestiges of secularism out of Turkey and to control the press and parliament as much as he can. He once told King Abdullah of Jordan that to him "democracy is like a train, you get off when you have reached your destination." The destination in question seems to be a theocratic state personally ruled by him. He's also done very little to fight against ISIS despite sharing a border with northern Syria and north-western Iraq where they're based. So my guess is the military's getting rid of him to return secular rule to Turkey (as they've done multiple times in the past 100 years when Islamist governments arose) and to do a better job fighting ISIS. I wouldn't be surprised if other NATO countries like France, the UK and the US knew about this shit beforehand and okayed it. That said, potentially plunging a country into sustained instability just because the leader's a dangerous jackass is questionable at best. If it leads to a prolonged civil war than they're as bad as him. And re-instituting democracy through a military coup is a pretty farcical concept. I'm just taking a bit of enjoyment at seeing Erdogan knocked down a peg or two. But this could still end up being a disaster.

The destination in question seems to be a theocratic state personally ruled by him. That's right, I remember that now. Certainly the guests at the Sky News feed I've been listening to the past hour or so seem...hopeful that Erdogan is gone, though of course they're trying to sound neutral.

Right now I bet Trump's being briefed on this and he's going, "Turkey's don't coo though. They go gobble gobble!"

And apparently Germany refused him. Once again, and this time with the feeling, religion needs to get the fuck out of politics.

Erdogan is a disgrace but this is some drastic action. Military involvement is a delicate thing in Turkey considering their history of coups.
Also it would really be nice if one of the most important Middle Eastern allies could have some stability right about now.

And of course if they fail that'll only strengthen and consolidate Erdogan's power.

I'm not one for conspiracies but this thing has all the hallmarks of a Reichstag fire sort of plot meant to propel Erdogan into the role of dictator he's always sought.

So.. did the coupe fail? Confusing reports coming out of Turkey at the moment. It's hard to know who to believe given Erdogan's hold over the press in Turkey. But all sign's point to the coup failing utterly. And imo towards a sort of Reichstag fire type of scenario as well.
