It's good to finally have confirmation on that as well as how short the seasons will be. Sadly, Season 6 will be the last time we had those epic 9 & 10 episodes! Originally we thought there were only going to be 7 seasons (to match 7 books) so having an extra season is still a positive thing overall even if shorter.

Well, we already knew, but it's good to have confirmation. I can't believe we are nearly at t the end, it's going to be very emotional. I did notice he said that the 6 episodes for season 8 wasn't set in stone, so maybe we'll get 7 episodes, hopefully.
This time next year we'll be getting ready for the final season.

We know pretty much nothing about S7, but I've been thinking if they conclude all the human drama and intrigue in S7, do they really need more than 6 episodes for the White Walker invasion? It doesn't sound like much but I think 6 episodes could be perfect for the final battle. They can't really stretch the WW invasion without losing the sense of urgency it should have. Of course 1 episode more or less shouldn't make a huge difference, so maybe HBO can convince them to do 7 episodes. I just think that there is a chance the series finale is 90 minutes or longer anyway. So 6 episodes would really be 7.

Just as long as all of my little wolf pups (and Jon, I guess) make it to that final episode, season 8 can be as short as they like

I would think most of the main characters will make it until the final episode. The first half of the episode will be the end of the war and whoever is going to die, will die there. And the second half would be the aftermath.
Or maybe they'll do an entire episode about the aftermath. I wonder if we'll get any flash forwards or will we be left wondering what happens to everyone. For some reason I thought that D&D had said that there will be a wedding at the end.

But tbh, such a complex story with so many different characters really needs that kind of extensive closure to be satisfying. I'm definitely here for that.

Along with closure for those fallen in the finale, they need to give an individual mini-ending to each of the surviving principal characters, along with endings for the various regions of Westeros that might not be covered by a main character e.g. Dorne.

I do wonder though how far into the future we'll go. With the instruction of the Citadel and the act that they have those devices that appear in the intro, we might get different sort of look into what happened to everyone.
Maybe it's a book being written or a story being told.

Perhaps, it depends if we still have magic by the end. It the books it's probably Bran because he's was the first chapter of the series.

I know some people theorize it's Sam writing an epic book about it from the Citadel under those astrolabe thingies. And Sam, being a fairly good representation of young George, maybe? I don't know if I feel like that theory is too campy or I love it to bits.

I reckon it is either Sam or Bran telling us the story. They do need closure on all of the main characters who survive. I think that season 7 is the final Game of Thrones itself and the story then shifts to the battle for the Dawn. I'm also of the mind that the last episode will be a longer one. I think it will be season 8 episode 5 the big big battle and episode 6 the resolution. I can't believe we are coming up to the final act of the show.
