This is another s2 episode that I'm not big on at all. I'll get to rewatching it tomorrow. But man, is it badly-paced.

I didn't think it was so bad, there are some good scenes. I loved Tyrion's scenes with Bronn and Cersei. Jon's battle with the Halfhand is good. Arya redeeming her final name to help them escape was good. The scene's with Jaqen and Arya are always on point. RObb and Talisa was crap, as usual. Also, Davos is named HotK. It was a nice setup for Blackwater

Alright. Here goes. Let the spamming begin.
Alan Taylor's direction is so perfect. It's a shame that, other than the finale, they gave him such uninterestingly-written episodes in s2. He still adds a ton of cinematic flair to them though. The way the episode begins with the dead ravens being dumped and Yara arriving is handled so well visually. But its the pacing of the script, setup scene after setup scene after setup scene with very little momentum or overall flow that he couldn't save; even with the best direction he could bring to the table.

When Robb and Talisa break out into forced laughter in unison after she says, "I'm sure you'll be very happy."

Hey! It's the Kev-man! Good old Ian Gelder popping up for the first time since 110. We won't see him again until 501. But he's always a welcome presence. To the Kev-man.

Sam says, "Help me with it" and then lets Grenn do all the lifting. So he's one of THOSE guys.

Ah. Robb and Talisa just made whoopie. I don't actually mind that scene tbh. Them throwing themselves at one another was a little forced but I've never minded her Volantis monologue and I can certainly see why someone would fall in love with her after seeing her recount something so tenderly. And with her being played by Oona too...Anyhow. That scene has little to do with my problems with the episode, so I don't have much negative to say about it. Plus...Oona. Anyhow. I'll finish the ep. after I get some sleep. So I'll pause my spamming for however-many hours.

I always thought the line "We should sail there immediately" from Tyrion was very Hunter S. Thompson.

Hey I'm catching up today on both episode 8 and 9 one after the other because I think they go better together seeing as 8 was just a lot of building up for Blackwater and some finale bits for Dany, Arya, etc. I did catch a couple of great symbolism/foreshadowing moments ... 1. Theon's "Twenty (Good) Men" that took Winterfell ... weeeeelll that was awkward in re-watch considering the man who will torture him nearly to death says the same thing later. I liked Yara's scoffing at the fact he took it and then killed the Stark boys which was stupid and calling him a cunt for it. I also forgot she let slip how much she cares about Theon by recalling the story of how he screamed as a baby until he saw her (which is why she loves him) ... aww. I'm so glad those two are back together and I appreciate Yara far more on the re-watch. 2. Gendry, Arya and Hotpie were great together ... "Shut up!" at least three times to Hotpie about his stupid cherry pie crust haha. They were like the three amigos of Westeros... 3. Huge forshadowing moment here when Varys and Tyrion talk on the walls of the Red Keep ... Varys warning Tyrion about Daenerys ... which Tyrion promptly scoffs at: I loved this! It was a nice subtle symbolic touch with the quietly ominous music and the flames from a forge flickering in the foreground too. Other great moments were Tyrion and Cersei (again... man they just knocked it out of the park every scene they had together this season) ... Tyrion's famous lines: Robb and Talisa love scene ... meh. I was even more aware of their awkwardness in the re-watch than the first time around. I think I'm obviously more jaded now in later seasons but seriously, they just didn't have any chemistry together though I actually didn't mind Talisa's story of how her brother drowned in Volantis and was saved by a slave. That was interesting and curious. We never did find out who she truly was on the show, did we? Bronn and Tyrion scene great... Bronn is the bored Commander of the City Watch refusing to wear the goldcloak (for good reasons he explained) and also being the common sense once again for Tyrion about war and sieges. Bronn is a good ally to have on his side right now. I had completely forgotten the scene with Davos and Stannis and how Stannis recalls the way Davos saved them with onions and the off-hand way he names Davos his hand and brusquely walks away when Davos kneels. Not the most elegant hand of the king naming is it, hah! But so typical Stannis. Overall not a bad episode if you go into it watching as a builder episode for Blackwater and the finale like me, because I'm late watching it ... so onward to Blackwater!

Two questions came to mind out of this episode if anyone feels like responding with their best guess:
1. Who is Talisa of Volantis really or does it even matter? Did the show make this persona up for a reason in the future or no?
2. Why do you think Jaqen was so insistent on Arya un-naming him as one of her three death names? Would he really have had to kill himself? Is the FM code that strict? Arya later uses the name thing in other episodes before she kills targets. Lots of theories on that whole name given to the God of Death thing.

1 - Talisa of Volantis suffers from what I call "Misused Secondary Characters". They tried to combine some story lines to compress the vast character count in the story, and in doing so, created a roll with no clear personality or need. Other than the sex scene, every scene they had together she could have been anyone. We knew little to nothing of her, yet she was so wonderful that the KitN would ruin his honor to marry her? I believe that as much as I believe Jon Snow is Ned Stark's true bastard son. Other than the wonderful story of her brother what else is there?
2 - The God of Death must have a name. I think if Jaqen hadn't been unnamed, a strange fate might have befallen him. A missed step, a broken neck - as long as his name was before the hand of Death, he was vulnerable to be noticed.
