Controversial topic, I know! But hey, I'm a Targaryen supporter through and through, so I have to get onboard with this new book coming out later this year (Nov 2018 I think) despite my disappointment, like many, that GRRM is not releasing Winds of Winter this year. One important thing to note is that this is very specifically NOT a novel, but a historical account of the 300 years before the current generation of Targaryens. George stresses this important distinction on his 'Not a Blog' site here: georgerrmartin.com/notablog/2018/04/25/fire-blood-on-the-way/Here is the synopsis/blurb page on the official site as well: www.georgerrmartin.com/grrm_book/fire-and-blood/What are your thoughts on this new book? For me, putting aside the massive fan angst many have about Winds of Winter delayed yet again in favor of this book, I look for the positives in it. That's easy for me to do being a huge fan of the Targaryen dynasty and all of the drama that went along with the various Targaryen rulers over the centuries. But even more important, I think this is a massive clue that this era is most definitely going to be one of the focus topics for HBO's promised spinoff series. I voted for early Targaryen dynasty and Dance of Dragons time period as one of the chosen so I definitely think this book's release and timing supports that vote. GRRM making effort for this literature (which he has had material written for many years before now anyway) to be published before HBO announces the spinoffs is a good PR move and of course good for selling lots of copies of the book once the new series is announced (if in fact it's this same subject). Do you think Fire and Blood's release date and subject matter is a nod towards a new HBO spinoff or just coincidence?

I'm excited as well for the new book.
Maybe it's because of the show but I'm not that invested in reading TWOWW as I once was. I'll be happy if it's released eventually (probably after the show is done) but I'm not upset it's not getting release.
As for Fire and Blood, I hope we get some good insight into the family. I also saw an excerpt of what it contains and it mentions that well learn the origins of Dany's dragon eggs which I'm very excited about.

It would be great to find out some of the details behind the Targaryens and the last of their dynasty and dragons leading up to the first ones we meet in Game of Thrones! I'll definitely be buying the book, though I do understand why some will be boycotting it in protest of Winds of Winter delays, again. I'm not criticizing it either way and like you, the show has replaced a lot of my need for the books at this point anyway. That itself is telling (and sad) and something I'm sure GRRM is acutely aware of all the time as he's trying to write. In fact, many think the show's success may have actually hindered his ability to write freely like he once did because now everything he writes may or may not contradict what's been done on the show. I think that has to put some pressure on his creativity for sure. But more than anything, I selfishly want one of the HBO spinoffs to be about the Targaryen Dynasty so the news of this new Targaryen history book was pretty exciting for me personally.

Hah! The irony of your screen name @fireandblood is not lost on me - considering that's the name of the book and you want nothing to do with it.

But I don't want anything to do with it until A Dream of Spring is published I would love to read it, but I'm refusing it on principle.

But I don't want anything to do with it until A Dream of Spring is published Wow, you're going to hold out that long? Who knows how many more years that one's going to take if Winds of Winter is taking 7 years or more, it could be 2030 by then!

I'm not really that much into ASoIaF lore, so I'm probably gonna skip this one. I never read The World of Ice & Fire either, I just ended up looking at the pictures.

I wonder if he's going to do most of the illustrations in the black and white comic/panel style like some of those Star Wars examples? I'm not a huge comic illustrator fan but his drawings are definitely good!

Maybe, I don't know yet, the Portly Prince of Publishing is on my needs a good beating list. Here is the thing, he is totally full of bs. He always says he is a slow writer, which is total bs. If you check out his bibliography it's packed, and from Dance to now it's packed, short stories, anthologies, editing, Wild Cards, extended universe, tv scripts. It's packed it's totally packed, nd then he comes back and says gosh I'm a slow writer. Yeah right the Princess and the Queen, the rouge Prince, the world of ice and fire, Sons of the Dragon and now Fire and blood. Plus supposedly constantly being close to finishing winds sometime between today and forever. No he keeps busy, he just didn't want to finish.
No, I call bullshit on his tired act.
Outside of that I may buy it, I haven't read Sons of the Dragon yet.
You know what I do find amusing about fire and blood? It's once again about the Targaryens. When I first got into the series, the first 3 books were out, swords had just come out. I would not revisit the series after swords for half a decade because dipstick got busy, oh I mean suddenly became a slow writer. I remember the first few chapters of thrones being in the north. Gosh who are these Starks and who is this Jon Snow? Is he the special, oh I smell special so pretty much the same reaction everyone has. Then came Dany, eeeeeek, two specials? Love story. I think many fans thought the exact same thing. And here I stand almost 2 decades later, and if the show had not of happened I'd still be sitting there like an idiot waiting for Slowy the 8th dwarf to write about the magical princess and the young prince.
I also hold a Special place in my heart for the Stark purists, who originally thought this was about the Starks. I thought that too, till Chapter three of thrones happened. Then Then by the end of Kings I was pretty sure I had figured out who Jon's parents were, I had that same idea about three more times about three different sets of parents. But once momentum picked up and we had R+L=J and Dany it was pretty much a lock this was a Targaryen focused main plot with many sub plots about many characters, but they all revolved around the main plot. It's. Targaryen Story, even Bran is sort of a Targaryen now. And the entire extended universe is all Targ all the time. So I don't feel I have been short changed about the series or the Targ material, I just don't like the bullshit lies, where he acts like he is a slow writer. He isn't, he just specializes in deceiving his fans, he's famous for it. He's not slow, he's likes to work and keep busy, he is pretty much always editing something, and always writing something and always doing something. It isn't writers block, he's been poring stuff out for other projects. It's just for some reason he don't want to finish winds.

I haven’t read Sons of the Dragon either. Rogue Prince REALLY pissed me off. Such a ripoff. I absolutely loved TPatQ, and then he releases this 30 something page bs that wasn’t nearly worth being its own story. I’m sure I’ll read SotD eventually as I certainly love me some Targs, but I’m not in any rush on that one.
A complete Targ history, with art though? That I’ll buy.

Rouge Prince was basically an extended wiki page. Still he found time to write it, but I think this was something right out of his notes for fire and blood. I'll probably get it as well, but I a, going to hate myself after the fact. I just don't get the Winds thing. 7 years is enough time, and soon it will be 8. I would also very much like the next Dunk and Egg, not sure on what's holding that up. It's obvious he likes writing about Targs, so write about the only two currently alive already.
Only thing I ask is that unlike the world book Ser Kermit and Ser Elmo stay out of the books, completely took me out of the world book.
