I got a question on tumblr about where is blue rose in Dany's vision. Yeah that one's a whole lot more vague and hidden than it was in the book for her vision, I had to ask at one point as well! I think I like how they tied it into the snowy throne room too. Very symbolic. It was one of the only early Daenerys scenes where they used the same blue/cold lighting filter for Dany where almost all of her filming is done with the sunny/warm lighting.

I do get why they did not wanted to reveal things in advance or try to be vague as possible. House of the Undying works really well for the books but not for the show, but still understand why people think it was underwhelming. That creepy, scary atmosphere in the books is simply better. One of the best chapters in the whole books. Someone mentioned that the sword Dany almost touched looked like Longclaw but don't think that was likely.

I'll do the one thing I am pretty sure of. That is a pinwheel, to be more exact it is a replica of the Pinwheel galaxy. The Pinwheel galaxy makes op the constellation Hydra, the water serpent, in this case frozen water. Who battled the Hydra and how was it defeated? Hercules who wore a Lion Skin defeated the Hydra by burning it with the help of his Nephew who wielded a firebrand. The Hydra in mythology is associated with not Just a water serpent, but it was also a Hybrid associated with Serpent, Lion and Crow. A crow famously served the Hydra to Apollo the Sun god. I've been watching so much Marvel then when I read Hydra I automatically thought about the villains of Captain America. I forgot to mention that the other night. The blue skull, the inverse parallel of the red skull. Multi headed serpent, I believe in Dany's liberation of Yunkai when she is in the center the pinwheel she is rotated and then the camera starts to rotate. The symbol of the pyre and first Others symbol have always made me curious. If you look close is it a circle with a line through it and a cross on the bottom? Looks kind of like Venus but i am not sure Venus does not have a line through it. But i swear I have seen it someplace. Actually looks more like Pallas as well. But neither are exact fits. The pyre is really interesting especially from a top angle, it's a classic conjunction symbol, large circle, smaller inner circle, sun and moon in the middle, life and death. The first symbol also does something weird with those 5 heads on spikes, not sure what that is about. But reminds me of planets for some reason. If it is Venus then it is a nod to exactly what the Others are after when combined with the pinwheel symbolism.

Well, a lot of people didn't get it and there are still people n westeros.org, reddit and other forums who are in denial of it. Your friend is funny, I imagine he's a very casual viewer. Going back to the teaser, the Pinwheel at the end has been shown twice before in the series. First, when Jon encounters the dead horses arranged in the pinwheel symbol and then at the en dod season 5 when the Dothraki encounter Dany they are surrounding her in that same pinwheel design. So what does this mean? Both instances the symbol was created with horses and both Dany and Jon were at the center of it. Notice this one rotates, Pinwheel. And of course they follow her.

We think it's one of the best theories out there as to what the writers were going for with the spiral and phi symbol (which is seen other places than just with Dany) on the show. I'm not as much inclined to go the route of zodiac and star signs because they refer too much to our own real world star system which takes you out of the realm of it being a fantasy universe not our own. The same argument could be said of the golden ratio/phi but it's a much more mathematics/physics-based theory which has a sort of non-specific philosophy and simplistic beauty to it rather than a physical form from our own skies if that makes any sense. I could really see the archmaesters studying physics and the golden ratio as part of their learning (astrolabe!) but not so much the same star systems as we see from earth. Here's the video if you haven't yet taken a gander:

About our debate on the Pinwheel and symbolism for it. We have to count on Bran too. Much like Dany, Jon or NK he's up there in the middle of it. His importance must he highlighted because Bran will be the ultimate wildcard.

Ice=death, revenge, preserves. Fire= passion, life, consumes I have a very busy week this week, but I saw this one the train on my way home and it made me think of a few things: Random thoughts ahead. Life and DeathSo we have Dany and the young man who later became the Night's King in the middle of the spiral while life is surrounding them, the running horses for Dany and the Trees for the soon to be Night's King. This seems to be happening in the summer like months. Jon and Bran are surrounded by death. Jon finds himself in the middle of the spiral surrounded by dead horses and Bran surrounded by dead trees, both in the middle of winter. Then we have the sort of literal life and death imagery. Dany as a woman, has the ability to bring/give life into the world. But Dany also was able to bring something dead back to life (dragons). Jon of course has been both dead and alive. The Night's King is both dead and alive. HorsesDany and Jon both stand in the middle of the spiral surrounded by horses. When Dany brought the dragons back to life she sacrificed a "Horse Lord" and an actual horse was burnt in the pyre. This is from the books but at the end of ADWD Dany shares a horse with Drogon. TreesBran of course is tied to trees because of his abilities as a greenseer.

I could really see the archmaesters studying physics and the golden ratio as part of their learning (astrolabe!) but not so much the same star systems as we see from earth. Here's the video if you haven't yet taken a gander: Sorry Envie I just saw this post the other day and the last couple of weeks has been super busy for me. I tried to watch the video a couple of times but it seems like every time I sit down my phone starts ringing non stop. Anyway I thought the video was very interesting and holds a lot of truth, but still not sure about the symbols. There is symbolism and then there is symbolism as a literary device and they are easily enough combined, that's not a problem. The first symbol looks the most like Phi, but I wonder about the heads, there are 5 and you could say they outline a pentagon but the ratio's are far from right and it does not look much like a circle. So in my other post I wonder what it is and delve into Greek symbolism as well. Martin is often fond of Greek mythology and mythology in general. In the spirals I would say those would be the best examples of the golden ratio or the fibonacci spiral which is often brought up in patterns in nature such as leaves, we see a tree in the center. So there I would say it makes the most sense, Dany's pyre on the other hand, while there is a circle with a line through it which is perfect for Phi, there is a second obvious circle right in the middle of it. There you may have D&D combining symbolism it's hard to say. Given the sun and moon nature of the event itself, I would say it's a clear symbol of conjunction but that does not mean they are not showing when two sides combine you get the Golden ratio and so they put a line through the circles. Make sense? Now with the spirals I feel like you see the same thing, the physical design of the of the spirals, is naturally going to be a Fibonacci spiral. But then there is the use of metaphor. We see 4 very different primary spirals. The White Walker spiral is all about cold, dark and death. Dany's first spiral was all about sun, warmth, and life. In the case Dany her spirals led not just change but a balancing in the moment. There was no battle, but there was freedom. In the case of Jon, just the opposite, it was battle. Battle of the fist and the Battle outside Winterfell. We are getting a lot of Maiden made of light, and Lion of night here duality. Which works for balance because you need to opposing halves. Notice how much time we see Dany during the day on the show and how dark and grey things are around Jon. There is also symbolism in the arrival of the Vale. The army of the Moon arrived. Something of note with Dorne as well, though I would have to re watch some episodes and that was the death of a sun who was a prince. I think there are several layers to the symbolism I am also curious as they do not exist in the books like this. But they do exist in numbers. Fibonacci 7 =13, though I do not know if this exists outside this one example. In the books one and three are usually interchangeable or an inversion of each other. It works out as cyclical sequence in the books 3 reverts to one and then back again. On the show Dany like in the book is most closely associated with 3, Jon with 1 and the Others and bad with 13, like Xaro and his 13 ships. The story of the 13 is not just about this last hero guy but it's part of the story for the war for the Dawn and centers around the Others. I don't like to get to much into mathematics with the series, because you can take the wall and it's association to 13 and then take it's association to 79 and you can end up in modular arithmetic, and number theory and I for one am not doing more math. Here math fun Me trying to understand some relationship between 13 and 79. Prove that in every sequence of 79 consecutive positive numbers written in decimal system there is a number whose sum of the digits is divisible by 13. An easy look at relationships might be 79=6⋅13+1 and 6=⌊13/2⌋. but oh no, lets go deeper......................................... For x∈N denote by r(x) the remainder modulo 13 of the decimal representation of x. If x is not divisible by 10 then r(x)=r(x−1)+1. If x is divisible by 10, but not by 100, then r(x)=r(x−1)−9+1=r(x−1)+5 .(1) If x is divisible by 100 , things are more complicated; see below. Consider a run R:= of 79 consecutive natural numbers, and assume that none of these numbers is divisible by 100. There is a smallest number c≤a+9 in this run which is divisible by 10. Assume that r(c)=1. Then (1) implies that the r-values in the interval [c .. c+39]⊂R are given by [1 .. 10],[2 .. 11],[3 .. 12],[4 .. 13](2) and cover all remainders modulo 13. It follows that R covers all remainders modulo 13, even if r(c)≠1. Note that we would see r(x)=0 for an x<c+39 if we had not insisted in r(c)=1
.
The run R may contain at most one number c divisible by 100. Assume that r(c−1)=12 and r(c)=1. Then the r-values in the interval [c .. c+39] are still given by (2). The r-values in the interval [c−40 .. c−1] are given by [0 .. 9],[1 .. 10],[2 .. 11],[3 .. 12] , and cover all remainders modulo 13. Note that we would see r(x)=0 for an x>c−40 if we had not insisted in r(c−1)=12
.
It follows that in the worst possible case we don't see the r -value 0 for all x in the interval [c−39 .. c+38] containing 78 integers. In order to realize this worst possible case we need c divisible by 100, r(c)=1, and r(c−1)=12. Assume that c−1 has k≥2 trailing nines in its decimal expansion. Then the stated conditions imply 2=r(c)−r(c−1)=−9k+1(mod13) . The smallest k≥2 fulfilling this is k=10. The number c−1=1010−1=9999999999 already has r(c−1)=12, and it is obvious that r(c)=1
in this case.
To sum it all up: Any run of 79 consecutive positive integers contains an x with r(x)=0. The first run of 78 consecutive integers containing no x with r(x)=0 is given by [1010−39 .. 1010+38]. Those are actually 10 to the 10th. Anyway, I did math once on R+L=J and I am not doing it again, this was a preexisting example of me trying to understand a relationship between 13 and 79.
You see what math leads to? It leads to bad things, I don't want to think about math, I want to think about my car going vroom vroom. Math is evil, I want vroom, vroom and cheese burgers.

A long time ago I had to do math to answer a question of how Rhaegar could fall off a horse because a poster did not believe it was possible and wanted proof. This was my answer and of course I put my own spin on it because it's me. @alia, continuing from my last post and your question about Rhaegar and Robert on the trident. "Alia of the knife, on 05 Mar 2015 - 6:26 PM, said: On Rhaegar and Elia, no, no matter what he might have felt for Lyanna, I think he was fond of Elia and certainly loved his children, It was said he doted on Rhaenys, and expected his faimly to be protected, so if we find out that Lyanna turned his head that much, I would be surprised, (though some of Jaimes dreaming could be a product of his guilt, or memories he'd shut out)." "And love, love LOVE your take on Ashara and Lewyn, though I'm still in doubt, but very clever. " "Now, since you are with "Scooby and the gang," out there, I do have a question to put to you. Imagine if Robert shot Rhaegar, were they on horses, or were they on foot?""Can you glean if Robert was felled by Rhaegar knocking him off his horse,(remember Neds words about Robert taking a blow from Rhaegar), and if Rhaegar dismounted to help him can you tell by the text how the blow happened? :stunned:"
"I know that Rhaegar was not the warrior that Robert was, but I don't know that Rhaegar died that easy."
"That Ser is your homework. ""Really love the detail here, and completely agree on the parallels, even with Daena and Arya. (I can't remember, but what was Daenas weapon of choice)? Did Robert play dirty and take a cheap shot in the process?" Homework for R+L=J By Ser Creighton Ntchwaidumela Well the thing is the closest Parallel I can get to Elia and Rhaegar is a Prince of Dorne and Ashara. It's the only other place as JStar points out that you can get a Prince. Though you could say not a prince and I would expect this person would then have to be from the North. However Selmy seems in place of Robert here, bitter and on the losing end. A Stormlord who loves the Targs though. Not a king a King Guard. So it comes down to perspective. Hmmm a man shot on a horse? Well I would prefer to stick with the actual weapons. A long sword is not designed to cut through plate mail. Rhaegars weapon of choice is a long sword. It is used to penetrate gaps in the armor. The possible wound to Robert would probably lack the kenetic energy to displace the rider. Robert is using a Warhammer/Handgun? A load yielding a ''mere'' 500 ft lbs let's say .. think on this (imagination needed here) ..... and I am too damn lazy right now to do all the math .... Swing an 8lb sledge hammer, as if perhaps to strike a post ... or to break a stone. Now let's say that a good swing accelerates said sledge hammer to 20 ft/sec ... that would mean an impact energy available of 50 ft/lbs ... and it doesn't take much to imagine the result of being on the receiving end.!! Roberts hammer was probably heavier but that is what I am going with. Furthermore ........ that energy, if the hammer hits square ... is spread over let's say 9 sq inches ( 3 x 3 face probably?). Well, force = pressure/area ... so pressure will be quite distributed..... but if that same weight hammer was a spike ... imagine then the concentration of force at the point. Huge increase in penetration, as against wider area 'crush'. Now to contrast .... taking the ''humble'' 500 ft lbs (easy figure) in, say, a 230 gr .45 acp bullet .. that has a cross sectional area of just 0.159 sq inches ... apply that 500 ft lbs to that small CSA and .. you can see how drastically penetration increases, because the impact area is now pretty small. In both cases not not all evergy will be realized. I am not doing all the math on this, there is no way I am doing all the math on this, to many variables, like horses transfering energy to the rider via moment. I have no bodies so I can't calculate actual penetration or angle of impact. And I am not going to reconstruct the scene, I left my horse in Tenn and nobody will let me make a human size impact gel dummy to put on another horse in armor, because life is not fair. I said we could use Shaggy (Mike O) instead of the dummy, but apperantly the union has some sort of rules about things like this. Whatever it's for science, well really it's for a fantasy book series, but that's almost the same. Time to go outside the box. Now I must admit I have tried to recontruct the scene before. My first problem is I am to small to play Robert and nobody would let me hit them with my hammer. So eventually I found myself switching rolls, and I volunteered to be the hammy reather than the hammer. Now I needed a 6.4 to 6.6 260 pounds of muscle dance partner with some experince hitting things with ancient weapons and the like. So I turned my attention to Hercules Dwayne the Rock Johnson. Hhehehe Rock Johnson. So when I used my resources to gain his cell phone number and call him, he seemed a bit put off at first. Ser Creighton: Hi is this the rock? The Rock: Who in the blue hell are you? Ser Creighton: This is Ser Creighton from a forum of ice and fire The Rock: Who? Ser Creighton: It's Ser Creig... The Rock: It's doesn't matter what your name is! Know your role and shut your mouth. The Rock got no time to be running around hitting every roody poo candy ass that does not under stand the basic mathmatical principals that occured on the trident. The sledge hammer weighs 16 pounds not 8. So it has a mass of m=W/32=16/32=0.5 slugs. Now if I apply the formula for Kinetic Energy which is K.E.=(mv^2)/2. This now gives me the total energy that the sledge hammer had at impact. Ser Creighton: So you going to hit me or not. The Rock: No the Rock is not going ot hit you, the Rock don't lay the smack down on the mentaly less fortunate. Ser Creighton: Hey! But I am on tem bring it, you have to help, now bring it. The Rock: I already broughted it and you are to slow to figure it out "click" Ser Creighton: Asshole, the fast and the furious sucks. Guess I need to find a more unorthodoxed solution, "Lightbulb" In conclusion, sometimes when people are on horses and get hit by things, they fall off. I refuse to do math after having to do that to prove a person can fall off a horse. Alia was trying to convince someone else that people can fall off or dismount a horse, the person seemed to feel it was impossible so she asked for my help. Why anyone needs to be convinced of that is beyond me but stopped doing math after that as I figure if I have to go that in depth then they don't want any answer but their own. As above I occasionally joke about it. Because it was one of the great WTF moments in R+L=J. Yes people can fall off or get on an off a horse all on their own.

Jesus Christ. I think we should just burn this thread down and start again. It's okay, we had a good run. Now come on you know that is just a commentary on how far things can go with theory, you are not suppose to understand the math or even try too. If it makes you feel better I will get you a nice ball of yarn to play with, you can can figure out how to how to unwind it. Seriously, though believe it or not math does get brought up from time to time. Just watch the video. Not that it was bad, it was really good. As for math it sometimes pops it's head up show and books. uproxx.com/hitfix/everyone-shut-up-math-proves-george-rr-martins-game-of-thrones-is-on-schedule/www.thewrap.com/game-of-thrones-has-a-protagonist-math-nerds-figured-out-who-it-is/Here is a really simple example. Why is 13 significant? The number repeats over and over. So does 3. Simple answer, it's not 13 it's 1 and 3. One represents unity and 3 the trinity. When placed together they represent opposition. That is the basis for the unity of opposites, unity, opposition, trinity. 1 and 3 or 13. Where does 1 come from though? 13 is associated with the last hero, or last 1. www.journals.uts.edu/volume-iii-1999-2000/24-nicholas-of-cusa-his-idea-of-the-coincidence-of-opposites-and-the-concept-of-unity-in-unification-thoughtYou know who was known for using the Unity of opposites in their poetry? Robert Frost. www.amazon.com/Unity-Opposites-Poetry-Robert-Frost/dp/137468905XOf course the series is named after his greatest example of this. But he is also quoted as saying this "Life is that which can mix oil and water... all a mans heart is a bursting unity of opposites." Martin's work is based off this philosophy "If love and hate can mate, then Ice can burn fire." "A song of Ice and Fire" "Sun and Moon and Dragons" The story of Azur Ahai, The regular use of Yin Yang symbolism.

sercreighton you're also forgetting that George really likes the number 7. Not really, but that is associated with something else in the series. There are other Numbers as well, but I was being specific to that. Did you ever notice that the faith of the 7 is supposed to be united behind one belief. Yet it created 7 kingdoms. Division. Robert uses 5 here but you get the general idea as he is speaking about Westeros. Is the series headed towards division, 7 Kingdoms as it was before, or is it headed towards a unity? Only time is going to answer that question, or it could just repeat a cycle. You could go all over the place with 7 but in the books it's generally associated with the faith. Nobody said Martin loved the number, he uses it to do what? Represent something. It also seems to pretty clearly allude to something along the lines of Christianity. The Heptagram being a Christian symbol for the 7 days of creation. Either way it pretty clearly represents something other than a number. Using numbers symbolically in writing is not exactly out of the ordinary, weather it's hidden meaning, a metaphor, universal meaning, it's not much of a stretch. 7 Is also in the Unity of opposites, and the unity of opposites is one of the pillars philosophy, and has been a theme in writing going back thousands of years so again not much of stretch. Even colors can have meaning, like in the great Gatsby, Martins favorite book, is well known for it's symbolic use of colors. Nobody has to look at a book that way you can take what is given and it's still enjoyable. You know he is not writing just random thoughts, you ever read his other works? Try Fevre Dream, the Skin Trade, A song for Lya, and Dying of the light. That is if you have not, you will see similar themes and homages to his own works all over the place. The Others appear to be entirely based off the Vampires in Fevre Dream. Things like that, the Boltons and Starks have some connection to the Skin Trade, and so on. Is Fevre Dream a book about Vampires and Werewolves or a metaphor for pre civil war slavery? The answer is yes to both. There is also a reason slavery exists in these books and is used as a simple juxtaposition.

A few simple examples from the show and books. Can a number change or represent another? Sure. Just like we can change. So 7 Kingdoms can become 1 kingdom. It can be 1 religion with 7 gods. The house of Black and White, many gods but one belief. Can a thousand eyes be only one eye? Yes. Can 3 represent 1 and vice versa? Can 3 Dragons represent 1 sword? Xaro tells us this. "Your dragons will be a flaming sword over the world" Much like the red sword of heroes. "Jon was armored in black ice, but his blade burned red in his fist" Note that Jon is shown in traditional Targaryen colors of Black and Red much like the sigil and right before this chapter Xaro had given us Symbolism for the Red Sword, 3 flaming Dragons. Essentially Jon is symbolic of his true house. 3 Dragons are interchangeable with 1 sword and vice versa. You know making fun of when math goes to far in theory is not the same as simple symbolism involving numbers. You should not discredit one because the other is just obviously over the top. One is meant to be over the top. The other is a pretty simple rational look at a literary device. Any form of symbolism really, it's there reason like the pinwheels, it means something, it relates to something, and it can be used to enlighten the reader or viewer if you can figure them out. Symbolism to for shadow, or relate information, or identify something and so on. Symbolism comes in any form someone can use it in.

Nah I don't know because, like everyone else, I'm not reading any of it. Start a blog or a journal or something maybe? Rather than plaster threads with essays that stifle conversation. Erm, because there was tons of really meaningful conversation going on in this thread already? C'mon grumpy cat, you know as well as the rest of us most conversation about Season 7 has dried up along with news and spoilers. Filming is done and we probably won't hear much of anything between now and the first trailer. No one's got much left to say about Season 7 ... we've speculated for months on end. Winter is over, spring is here! Sure, there are theory threads this stuff could go in and we have great symbolism threads already (hint hint) but is it really a terrible thing if people ramble about theories here while waiting for Season 7 news? Sercreighton wasn't the only one contributing in this string of madness. I guess we could all post here once a day saying "Gee I wish the Season 7 trailer would come out!"
